Mom has cancer

Hello all,

Just needing a place to journal.

Just found out my mom has cancer. It is quite bad in her right lung and windpipes. We won't know everything until Monday when the Doc's meet with us.

My mom doesn't know yet. She will know all too soon.

I will be at this meeting Monday. Any advise?

I am terribly saddened.

My dad also has cancer. His is non hodgkins lymphoma and he has been through chemo successfully twice now. His cancer is not curable, but if treated and in a place that is treatable it will go into remission for periods.

There are many cancer survivors in this world, so until you find out otherwise assume your mom will come through this. Chemo and or radiation are ugly, but better than the alternative. The more positive an attitude she has and the people around her have, the better off she will be. It is tough, I know, I used to come home and break down in tears after being at the hospital.

Do as much research on knowledgeable sites that you can. By this I mean sites like the Canadian Cancer Society, etc. <not sure what it is in USA> Avoid just doing a blanket search for cancer.......it may scare the crap out of you and half of it isn't true!

Talk to the doctors. Ask all the questions you have. You may wish to prepare a list so you don't miss anything. Bring a pen and paper to write down anything you may want to research or don't think you will remember.

Last, hang in there and be strong. Until you know exactly what you are dealing with there is no point in panicking. <easy to say i know!>

I'm sorry you find yourself in yet another club of mine Sometimes God works in myseterious ways for sure!!

LonelyMomWife,

I faced the same situation last February.

Odds are your mom has an inner sense of what is going on. I know we hadn't said the words to mom before hand but at the meeting she didn't seem shocked when the doctor laid the options on the table.

Just being there is what your mom needs on Monday. Hang onto the slightest positive the doctor says and focus onto that hope.

It is good to have as many family members there as possible because everyone absorbs different things that the doctor puts forth.

We all had ourselves worked up for the worst news possible but doctors have a process to follow in each different case. What family has to do is keep positive reinforcement flowing so that mom is so busy enjoying the love from her family that she can endure any treatment they want her to try.

Take care and our thoughts will be with you during this trying time.

Just when you think....

October 28 2007, 12:15 AM

I've been through this with my mother, father, and now my father-in-law. Just when you think the doctor is going to clarify everything, they only tell you a little, or that you have to wait, or that there is another test, or some such thing. Just a warning that if you think they are going to tell all on Monday, you may be sorely disappointed.

It's a process and they are just practicing after all. Be patient, be positive. One step at a time. You're in my prayers, as is your mother and family.

Best treatment?

what can be be done to help her thru this... new treatments available...test studies...that may help her.

is surgery an option...

My mother-in-law had lung cancer. It was well over 10 years ago that she was diagnosed. She had COPD at the end. That is bad also.
Take it one day at a time.
Hugs to you

Just sending lots of hugs and sympathy. I went through cancer with my Dad 3 years ago. Be strong for your Mom, but take care of yourself when the opportunity presents itself.

I know this is a frightening time for you, but I also know that you love your mom and you will do whatever you need to do to help her through this. I know this may sound strange, but being able to help her is a blessing because it gives you an opportunity to show her just how much you love her and what she means to you. My mother died of cancer, and we were estranged at the time (her choice). I won't go into the details, but I am sad every time I think about her death because I wasn't able to be with her.

Hug your mom for me.

HUGE comforting and encouraging fairy hugs,

I'm hoping things went as well as could be expected today. How did your mom respond to the news? Do the docs have a plan of attack? Are there options your Mom gets to pick in regard to treatment?

My only advice would be to ask her what it is she needs and wants and assure her that you will be there along the way for her. In the end, that's what all of us want, right? To know the people we love are there for us and to keep those lines of communication open, so we can love and support them and they can love and support us.

My best wishes for your entire family throughout this difficult "chapter". Let us know how things are going. BlueIris
