The creation of the EPA was a noble cause. I can remember moving to Ohio from Nawlins in 1973 and the horrible air pollution that would blanket the state during the summer. The sky was deep orange, the rivers were flammable and when you blew you nose, black snot would come out. Tomorrow we will have an air quality alert day which is when the pollution index is over 100. Heck, in 1973, 100 would be considered great air quality as 300 was very common.
Unfortunately, the EPA has become a political organization that is unable to strike a balance between economic necessity and cleaner air and water. They demand unreasonable standards that punish net EXPORTERS of electricity like Ohio while pointing to states that IMPORT energy as being responsible for not polluting as much. Once they shut down a large number of coal fired electrical plants in northern Ohio, the cost of electricity in that region will skyrocket (the contracted price for electricity in north eastern Ohio is set to triple by 2015). The effect will be way less electricity being exported by Ohio to border states and guess what, they will pay even a higher price. The result will be many manufacturing plants will move out of the area to more energy rich states like Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, ArKansas and the like.
