....hell of a dancer, hell of a choreographer. But the dude was not a musician, and he wasn't all that original. He was heavily influenced by James Brown...most especially his dancing. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't hear much said about James Brown when Michael died or at the memorial. Which is incredible to me.
MJ sold a ton of records (and videos) from, comparitavely speaking, few releases. Which certainly speaks to his popularity at a certain time. But if you look at WHEN most of his sales occurred, you will find that (until his death of course) he hadn't sold squat in years. And after the recent interest blows by, he won't be selling squat again. James Brown is still selling, will always be selling, and so will the Beatles. Generation after generation. We'll have to take up this debate of course in 10 years to see who is right. I will be very surprised if Michael Jackson is still selling records 10 years from now.
