SF2 - Completely disagree that early Beatles stuff was garbage. It was basic rock'n'roll, and very well done. "She Loves You" contained complex chord progressions and harmonies never before heard in driving rock. Yes, the Beatles music became much more complex later on, so complex that it couldn't be performed publicly. That is NOT, in my opinion, how you measure the staying power of music. They'll still be playing "She Loves You" 50 years from now.
On the other hand, I agree with everything else. MJ was a showman, and his popularity was mainly due to visual appeal, and it came along at a time when visual phenomenon could be transmitted easily and quickly internationally.
He even swiped the idea of the "single glove" from Thomas Harvey "Sean" Bonniwell who was the lead singer of The Music Machine ("Talk Talk," 1966) who wore a single black glove.
Not to mention the ever present lyric "zham on" (i.e."Come on" -- swiped from Jackie Wilson), and of course the essence of his dancing (from James Brown). |
