Part of the problem is there are 32 teams in this league and the available talent is diluted in the sense it is hard to get good players in key positions like def. linemen and offensive linemen. Def. line has always been a problem for the bengals and when you add problems with safetys and CB's to the mix you have a defense like the Bengals that doden't cut it against the good teams. Without a decent pass rush to pressure the opposing QB the cb's and safetys will get worn down late in the game. Also without a decent run stopper the opposing team will control the game and wear out the defense.
Also the offensive line had been poor and this is what the bungs need to enhance their running game and give their defense a rest and control the game. If you have a bias toward a passing game that implies a quick strike offense and doesn't give the defense a chance to rest. Getting a better power runner than Benson also would help.
I think with the talent dilution it will be hard for the bungs to get these critical players to make their system work. I've always felt the true "skill" positions are on the off. and def. lines. The other so called "skill" positions are a dime a dozen. Zimmer is a decent coach but with the above problems it is an uphill battle. The jury is still out on Gruden however he must have something or other teams wouldn't want to interview him. Marv as mentioned stinks on offense and should stay out of that.
Bottom line - their are many needs in key areas on this team but there are 32 other teams with similar problems. It will be interesting to see how GB and NE do in the playoffs with their poor defenses and how other teams will exploit that. |
