      A good conversation could be had about quarterbacks who seemed to be on the verge of greatness, then went pffffft. The short list that comes to mind is...

      - Jeff Blake

      - Aaron Brooks

      - Daunte Culpepper

      - Doug Flutie

      - Jeff Garcia

      - Jeff George

      - Rick Meier

      - Kordell "Slash" Stewart

      At one point for each of these players, the critics just had to shut-up because his level of play looked so good. Then everyone felt surprised when Mr. Great turned into Mr. Stiff.

      I'm leaving out players whose effectiveness was curtailed by injuries. It seems to me that Culpepper's nasty knee injury was not the sole cause of his decline, although it played a role. Nobody else on this list has such an excuse. Correct me if I'm wrong.

      Stewart was a bit like Meier and Blake -- they had weaknesses in his game the defenses could exploit. Meier's situations was by far the most pronounced, but Blake and Stweart also had to have things lined up just right in order to succeed. Maybe Culpepper and Flutie, too?

      Brooks and George were just big head cases.
