Shirley likely to miss camp

BY MARK CURNUTTE | MCURNUTTE@ENQUIRER.COM

Bengals rookie defensive tackle Jason Shirley, the team's fifth-round draft pick, will likely miss the team's mandatory minicamp because he will be Fresno, Calif., to tend to ongoing legal matters.

A mistrial was declared Thursday in Shirley's misdemeanor trial that stems from three-driving related charges from last fall, The Fresno Bee reported on its Web site.

The jury could not reach a verdict on three charges facing Shirley: driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher and hit and run. He also has been charged with driving with a suspended license.

Retrial of the case is expected to occur June 25. Jury motions will begin Monday. The Bengals' mandatory three-day minicamp begins Thursday and will feature five practices through Saturday morning.

"We're very disappointed," Charles Magill, Shirley's attorney, told The Bee. "Mr. Shirley wanted to have this behind him so he could go forward with his professional career."

...I think we all how well players do after missing rookie camp, here. <roll eyes>

Not to be anti-defense attorney here, but why doesnt he just plea out on this? Does he have previous DUI priors?

WTF?

This should be a $1000 fine, time served, AA weekend program and some community service...

Great, another player that loves the sauce.

Bronco, I agree

Plead out, get it behind you, and get your but to camp.

Maybe he's asked his attorney to draw it out as long as possible so he doesn't have to sweat his nuts off in June.

...catch his act on video at the last camp? Dude basically walked thru the agility drills. His feet were so uncoordinated it is hard to imagine he could walk and chew gum at the same time. I mean, wow.

...camps they have had but it was at the rookie initial camp. WOW. He looked like he was in training for the Special Olympics rather than an NFL team. Simply woeful.
