3rd Receiver?

I understand that Brat (sigh) will start using Utecht more in the offense, which is a good thing (it cant possibly get any worse (at least as to how the TE's are used).

My question is which receiver will step up.

Here is my analysis on the recievers in question

Chatman - his vagina is hurt almost as much as Perry's. We cant count on him.

Holt - Great Kick Returner who apparently has made strides this year. I have a funny feeling if he stays healthy, we will see a whole lot more of Glenn Holt.

Maxwell - Supposedly, the best reciever (outside of TJ and CJ) in practice. HE makes crazy questions when the game is not on. Will he take it to the next level? Who freaking knows?

Simpson - all the media outlets say he is 1-3 years away. He is raw and is not a good route runner (a necessity in the NFL). He is able to grab the crazy acrobatic catch, but he is a young grasshopper and still learning.

Caldwell - he started for Florida in all 4 years. He is a proven commodity and should be able to assimilate the easiest. He would be wise to work with Carson and Co. as much as possible.

Urrethra - practice squad...or cut

Purify - I would like to see this kid make it. HE has mad skills and speed. If Callahan had half a brain, this kid would have been all american. I hope he makes practice squad at least.

With reps, Glen Holt could be a very good third receiver.

Chatman - his vagina is hurt almost as much as Perry's. We cant count on him.

I think Chatman is garbage on the field. He's as proven as water in my gas tank. He sucks even when he's healthy. He's Peter Warrick...after he ripped up his knee.
NOT THE THIRD RECEIVER

Holt - Great Kick Returner who apparently has made strides this year. I have a funny feeling if he stays healthy, we will see a whole lot more of Glenn Holt.

I disagree. Glen Holt can't hold on to the football. Plus, the Bengals have been looking for someone to step up and give them a reason to play them over Chris Henry for two years now. If it was gonna be Glen Holt, there wouldn't be any question right now.
NOT THE THIRD RECEIVER

Maxwell - Supposedly, the best reciever (outside of TJ and CJ) in practice. HE makes crazy questions when the game is not on. Will he take it to the next level? Who freaking knows?

We'll see. I have no idea what he can do on the field. So...
NOT THE THIRD RECEIVER

Simpson - all the media outlets say he is 1-3 years away. He is raw and is not a good route runner (a necessity in the NFL). He is able to grab the crazy acrobatic catch, but he is a young grasshopper and still learning.

I think he's gonna be the guy...who gets taped to the goalposts 3+ years into his career. He'll never reach his "great" potential because he has the proven coaching of the entire Cincinnati Bengals franchise on his side.
NOT THE THIRD RECEIVER

Caldwell - he started for Florida in all 4 years. He is a proven commodity and should be able to assimilate the easiest. He would be wise to work with Carson and Co. as much as possible.

Unfortunately...he's the guy. As the roster stands now...barring no FA signings...he's the guy by default. He's the most polished and healthy 3rd WR we have. Which is sad. But a 4 year starter in the SEC and a proven college player will outpreform all the other jokers in camp and lock down that spot. Now once the season starts, all bets are off. I can't see any reciever getting that many balls on the same field with CJ, TJ, and CP's new TE toy.

Urrethra - practice squad...or cut

If he's a good kid (smart, respectful) and he has the skill set, I'd like to see him make the team. But this is football. He'll be busing tables at TGIFriday before too long.
NOT THE THIRD RECEIVER

Purify - I would like to see this kid make it. HE has mad skills and speed. If Callahan had half a brain, this kid would have been all american. I hope he makes practice squad at least.

Maybe Purify is the one without the brain.........Honestly I have no clue about the skills and personality of Maurice Alexander Purify. But I would always agree that if he's one of the best 5 or 6 guys you keep, you keep him.
NOT THE THIRD RECEIVER

The WR corps as a whole, of you factor in Ben Utecht, will not be this team's problem in 2008. Utecht will catch a good 40 passes in addition the 80 - 100 for TJ and CJ. There definitely needs to be some development behind the front-line guys. But the problem was last year with the lack of a third option...not necessarily a third WR. With Henry out...and Perry on VR (Vaginal Reserve) opposing defenses could just sit on options 1 and 2. It was way to difficult a job for CP to thread a ball in a tiny window every third down.

Remember when Tab Perry got on the field last year. He dropped like 4 straight balls and kept looking at his hands and then gesturing like it was CP's fault that he was 10 yards away from the spot where the ball was supposed to meet him.

I think Caldwell steps up and Utecht fills in the gap. If Perry could sell his soul to Satan himself and stay healthy for a year, this offense could be VERY good. But no way that happens. There's a better chance that The Saints call up to the Sacramento Sirens looking for some coaching help.

T.J. could not hold on the football either problem was he isn't a returner. Holt is a good recievier he is tough and can take a hit, he goes across the middle without fear.

Caldwell starts the year as the 3rd receiver, Simpson takes over by about game 8.

I disagree that Chatman is not good. His last year in GB he made some unbelievable catches filling in for an injury, and not only the ridiculous catches but he made the ones you are supposed to make too, no stupid drops. Yeah, he had Favre throwing to him, but Favre chucks the ball like 90 mph even on 5 yard routes so you know the guy has strong hands to hold onto the ball.

I like Holt too but he is more of a 4 or 5 receiver that contributes on special teams and can fill in a pinch. He doesn't break a game wide open for you.

Simpson has apparently looked pretty bad in OTAs, not surprising since he has never faced top level competition and was going against Hall, O'Neal and Jo-Jo. But they will start playing him as the 3 receiver at some point anyway, b/c they figure he has to learn some time and they've invested too much in him to let him ride the pine for too long. Besides, Mikey boy wants to see how his new toy looks. I see him making some spectacular catches, making some big plays, but also running some wrong routes and dropping some easy ones. Basically Chad but raw and (hopefully) sans the attitude. I just hope he has the same drive to get better.

By the way, is the bet between AMM and Falc still on? According to Falc Utecht will not make 30 catches this year, despite the fact that anything with a pulse can catch 30 in this offense with palmer at QB. The real question for the season is: what should we change Falc's avatar and name to (assuming AMM opens it up to a democratic process)?

Yes, and according to history, Brat doesn't like throwing to his TE's. That isn't working very well in Utecht's favor. So, if this is democratic, do I get to change your name and avatar if Ben doesn't get his 30 catches too, Cin-C?

I think it is Palmer that doesn't like to throw to the TE, not Brat. I was at the San Diego fiasco 2 years ago and our tight end was open ALL DAY and Palmer never threw it to him. Carson is a 2 read QB for the most part. Rarely gets to the 3rd let alone his 4th progression.

I doubt our TE sees 30 catches regardless of what is said. Chris Henry had one good game and was pretty much a ghost the last 7. I watched those games and Henry was open more than most think. Palmer never got him. He will always try to force the play with Chad or CJ.

We didn't use the TE the first 8 games last year when Henry was on the bench so I just don't buy we will all of a sudden use him this year because Henry is gone.

SF2 - Palmer is a much more smarter QB than that. I think it has to be the play calling. These coaches and QB's are constantly reviewing film. They are researching to what could of been done better. I would think at some point in the past 5 years someone would of said "hey this guy is always open - why cant you pass to him"

Personally I think the TE is constantly blowing his assignment/cant contain his man, and thus stands there like an idiot at the line of scrimmage.

I would also say that Palmer had some happy feet the last couple of years. IT seemed to me he would do his first two reads, the feet would start tapping and he would unload the ball.

I think that was probably due to his injury-fear and his o-line. The games that I saw last year didnt exhibit better pass protection, however Palmer did unload the ball quicker (and often times off the mark).

I think Palmer needs more time in the pocket than a Brett Favre, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.

I have been here less than a year, 6 months or so.

Yeah, that is really "forever" isn't it Falc.

Was I really passed over for member status, or did I just never bother asking for it since I can post my comments anyway and am in no way restricted without it? I guess since you are not a mod you will never know.

C'mon Falc, unmask yourself as a creepy women's football coach that loves showing the lineman "the proper technique" and looks forward to "hitting the showers." At least those girls don't rely on sexual harassment suits, they can just kick your fat azz when things get out of control.

Seriously though, I hate bringing those girls into it because surely they deserve better, what with there abusive pasts and all that turned them into butch dykes that want to prove they can compete in a man's world. It's just too bad they couldn't get a better teacher on how to be a man than you.

Palmer and smart

No score for this post
July 8 2008, 6:33 AM

I don't buy Carson being a much smarter QB than most. He has been blessed with GREAT athletic receivers, a good running game and a very good offensive line for most of his career. I have seen Tom Brady and Brett Favre do great things with far less talent.

Furthermore, as the game progresses the defenses seem to adjust to our offensive schemes yet Palmer does not adjust to their defensive changes. You can blame Brat all you want but if Palmer were so "Smart" he would audible at the line of scrimmage and take what the defense is giving him i.e. a short pass to the TE. Never happens. Always throwing to Chad and TJ. A smart QB would change the play, a system QB runs the play and tries to make it work.

I also buy the fact that Palmer does have happier feet since the knee injury and has ZERO mobility. This is not the recipe for a great QB in the NFL. You have to make it to the 3rd read at a minimum and or be willing to move to buy time. Big Jen does this as does Brady and Peyton Manning. Manning is great at reading defenses and changing the play at the line, Jen isn't afraid of contact and Brady moves around in the pocket very well.

You can defend him all you want but after the San Diego fiasco I started having my doubts about Carson. He only needed to run an efficient offense in the second half and kept missing open receivers and in particular, the TE who was open all day. He choked and didn't burn anytime off the clock with a massive lead. San Diego shut down the long ball and Carson COULD NOT ADJUST.

Great QB in the right system but he isn't and hasn't led us to much success with incredible offensive firepower. Sure our defense has sucked but there were certainly games that we could have won if the offense would have executed. The offensive is good until its crunch time.

We have had a very good running game with Carson as the QB for every year except the last one. If you are only talking about last year than yes it wasn't so good. Still not a good reason for Palmer to rarely throw to his third option.

We didn't dominate other teams because we are a passing team with 2 pro bowl wide receivers and a pro bowl QB. We still had to have a good running game to keep the defenses honest and we did (until last year).
