I can't stand the Steelers. Since they injured Ken Anderson by trying to twist his neck off. Since the Steel Curtain and the overrated Bradshaw. But... boy do they have well run organization. This is why I can't watch football any more. Just too painful. When the Steelers win the Super Bowl, I want to stay in for a while. The sight of terrible towels being waved after the game made me want to do something I'd regret later.
Perhaps in another five years I won't care at all. It doesn't pay my bills. It doesn't bring pleasure. Why follow it at all? I have a five-year-old who won't see a game while he is in my house. Much different than what I was brought up on... Sad. But I can't see doing the same to my son. Or.... maybe he can choose his own team. Be a bandwagon jumper. It is much better than this.
Proud non-supported of the Bengals since 1995.

Flacco played like a rookie.

My fellow U of D grad did play like a rookie because he is a rookie. The farther you get along in the playoffs the harder it is going to be to cover his inexperience. It caught up but I will say he has a hell of an arm. He throws a good ball.
I said Ken Whisenhunt would be a good hire and was right. He is riding some luck but he accomplished geetting to the Super Bowl.
I hate the Steelers and when I was watching the game and some of those hits I realized how far off the Bengals are from competing in the divison. Another thing, when was the last time a Bengal got hurt and manned up? Terrell Suggs played his but off. I am jealous of both teams and feel the Bengals have to step up there physicality if they are going to compete for the AFC North title. Physical teams beat flashy teams 80 percent of the time.

The Steelers have the right mind set.
The Bengals have Chad and TJ!

Once again, Rainman needs to be educated about football.
I still stand by my comments about the Bengals trying to build thier team like the Steelers build thier teams.
It was a point about building thru the draft and not spending money on free agents that will not improve the team.
You would not understand that, since you simply don't understand football!
I have said this before...
THE STEELERS HAVE HINE WARD.
THE BENGALS HAVE CHAD JOHNSON.
That pretty much explains why the Bengals are home again, and the Steelers are going after another ring.
Chad and TJ have to go!

"It was a point about building thru the draft and not spending money on free agents that will not improve the team.
THE STEELERS HAVE HINE WARD.
THE BENGALS HAVE CHAD JOHNSON."
And why do we have players like Chad instead of like Ward? Because Mike Brown can't properly evaluate talent. Chad was a "value pick" -- a player with immense talent who dropped in the draft because of behavioral/personality factors. Mike and Co. can't find and develop diamonds in the rough because they don't have the right people making personnel decisions. The Steelers don't need to use free agency because they have a good scouting staff and smart football people in charge. As much as you keep hoping the Steelers "mind set" will help the Bengals it won't, because the Bengals are a loser organization with losers running the show.
"The answer to the general manager problem is the same answer that we have to have for all these criticisms. We have to win. When we manage to do that, we won't hear so much about that kind of talk." - football genius Mike Brown

Limas Sweed would be a great Bungle. Dropped a perfect pass that would have been a 50 yard TD then rolls around like he's injured and costs the team a timeout b/c it was in the last 2:00 of the half. Classic.

Yes, Limas Sweed getting hurt after dropping a ball made him a Bengal. What made him a Steeler is he got chewed out for it and went back into the game and layed someone out. He had a big time block! There is your difference.

It amazes me that Brown and his dolts take so many risks on unproven draft picks, yet are so conservative in play calling, scouting, managing, Free agency, etc.
Its like being at the race track and betting $1000 on an unknown and $2 on the favorite.

The Steelers have had a ton of busts lately and thru the years.
Several linebackers have failed to live up to Steeler standards.
The got some great value picks...but have failed on alot of higher round picks.
Mainly thier line...they suck at drafting lineman that last.
If the Bengals drafted Hines Ward, you guys would have went nuts.
He played qb in college.
The Steelers used a first round pick on a db, that lasted 2 years, then cut.
They drafted idiots like Plaxico in the first round, after knowing his flaws.
They drafted Holmes, a problem player, that seems ot be working b/c he was put in check by Hines Ward and Big Ben.
They had guys leave and repalced them with people like Flowers and Poteat.
Decent players, but nothing special.
The have allowed the best lineman in the league walk.
The biggest seperation is the solid vets like Ward and Harrison.
The pride behind the Steelers started with Lambert and co.
They instilled thier devotion and work ethic into players like Hardy Knickerson and that translated into players behind him from Kirkland and Brown to Loydd and Green, then Porter and Farrior....
Shell then Woodson and Lake to Polly and Townsend.
That is why, I believe the Bengals need to go into the direction of Mauala and Rivers.
Start something new.
Allow your defense to be the team that people take pride in.
James Harrison talked about how important it was to be a Steeler linebacker and how most linebackers in the NFL dream of wearing that jersey.
QB's and tailbacks are great for a short time.
Look at the 49ers....
Great qb's....then nothing, they missed on a few...Now they are a bad franchise.
The Steelers have had a great defense for almost 40 years.
Don't get me wrong, a QB is vital to be a great team, you can't win with average qb's, but to instill some pride in a franchise, you have to look at a defense first.
Linebacker is the best place to start...
You have one, now add the other piece.
Not too long ago, the Patriots sucked azz!
They turned it around and made a great run for about 6 years.
Arizona now.....
I know Fitzgerald and Warner and James get a ton of press, but if you have watched them this year and thru the playoffs, the defense has won the games.
It can be fixed, you just need that energy from the defense, the offense feeds off of it and you are not going to get that energy from a fat azz or a left tackle.
Sorry, not going to do it.

Well, I've been having a recuring fantasy in which a genie suddenly appears and grants me one wish. After thinking it over, my wish is for all the Steeler fans at a game...let's say it's the Super Bowl.... each have one small corner of a 'terrible towel' inserted in the only posterior bodily oriface that normal people have, and the other corner is set afire. This is done en masse, thus causing a frantic stampede toward the exits. The sight of thousands of those damnable things flaming would be soooooooooo very entertaining.

Three Superbowl heroes (Burress in XLII, Ben and Holmes in XLIII) just to name those guys, not to mention Pro Bowls and in the cases of Miller or Holmes just very solid starters (Holmes has that upside...Miller would on a team that would throw the the TE more frequently; Simmons will never be a Pro-Bowler but was a solid starter for a few years there). Timmons and Mendenhall are too young to judge at this point.
When I saw this video today I instantly remembered your 'expert' analysis three months ago...

I think Burress was the hero in SB XL--but we all know what you're saying. Otherwise solid post.
And even more solid--is the Steelers' Drafting of the 1st rounders for the last 8-10 years. They know who they should go after--and it shows. Maybe the pre-draft interviews are important after all?
They don't reach until after the 1st round--when they know that they can take risks. They fill holes in their lineup--else they draft for depth.
You can argue it--but taking Plaxico in that draft actually paid off with a ring. He was an integral part of that team even though he's no longer a Steeler. It seems that the Steelers were smart to get rid of Plaxico when they did.
