I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I just received word that Darren Steele AKA Dunn4QB passed away Feb 16 in Durham NC, not sure what the circumstances were but may be due to his battle with brain tumors. Regardless of how you viewed him as a poster he was a very important member of MBS and he will be missed.
Rest in peace dude

I tried to send out a message today. It must be in cyber-space. Darren would be amazed that his MOM was on his beloved web-site of MBS.com. However, I wanted all of you to know that he loved this web-site and posting about the Bengals.
Darren's chemo failed and he was starting radiation treatments. He only had one treatment. He suffered a stroke, I called 911 and he died at the hospital the next day never recovering consciousness. He did not suffer.
I am in Ohio, and booked my flight for Florida for Saturday already or I would love to toast with all of you on Saturday. He would have loved that you all were thinking of him, but not that his Mom was there ha ha.
Enjoy next season - he will be complaining about Mike Brown and trying to orchestrate a change in management from a "higher" place.
Mom

Dunn could remember a quote you made 4 years earlier and pull it up on you in a nano second, amazing how he could remember so much and retrieve things so quickly.
Poor guy battled brain tumors so long, MBS was a big part of his life and he was a big part of MBS

I met Darren over 15 years ago, at my very first Durham Blues Festival. I had no idea how close wed become, all that wed go through or that Id be here right now having to say goodbye.
Darren loved living in Durham. In fact, he loved Durham more than anyone I know except for maybe Bill Johnson. Whether it was music at Brightleaf, a Bulls game, or Sunday football at Devines, you could count on Darren being there.
Darren loved the Durham Bulls. He attended every baseball game that he could. He was there so much; he even ended up on a postcard of the Durham Bull crowd. If you look carefully, you can see him standing in his favorite place behind home plate. One year, when Darren found out he had another brain tumor; he was more upset about missing opening day, than having brain surgery.
Darren loved music. He played the drums and took every opportunity to see live music. He went to see everyone from Van Halen to James Brown. He said that seeing the Rolling Stones was a spiritual experience. Darren would always let us know what was going on around town. You could always count on him being at West Village, Brightleaf Square, and American Tobacco, for the free concerts. I dont know how he did it, but he always ended up dancing with a group of pretty women (Penni and friends), doing his big bus move. Most of all Darren loved the Blues Festival. It wont be the same without him there.
Darren loved Football too. If it was Sunday, you could always find him at Devines eating a patty melt and cheering on the Cincinnati Bengals. He was so excited when he got to attend the Bengals spring training camp in Florida. Even when his team wasnt doing well, he was a loyal fan and a pretty good sport about it. After the Buffalo Bills lost four Superbowls in a row, Darren said, Thats what the Bengals call September!
Darren was not really into holidays, but he loved Halloween! He loved to dress up and created the most unique and funny costumes. When I first met Darren, he lived in a big house with a bunch of guys. Every year theyd have a huge party, serving up Keiths homebrew and loud music, all night long. Even though that was back in our younger years, the Halloween tradition continued. One year we decided to go to a Costume party at Culloms. When Darren took over the music, it became one big dance party. Darren has been designated D.J. ever since. Last year, Darren traveled to Ohio for his 20th High School Reunion. He was able to see many of his old friends and was the D.J. for the reunion party.
Darren loved comedy and brought his sense of humor to good times and bad times. Whenever he was in the hospital, a nurse would come in and ask if he was Darren Steele. He would always answer with, Im wearing his underwear! Even when he was anxious about his upcoming radiation, hed answer the phone Psych.Ward. Id respond with, Is there an extra bed available?
Darren loved to watch stand up comedians and funny movies. I always thought it was fitting that was an extra in the movie Patch Adams. Not only did he get to meet his idol, Robin Williams, but he was in a movie about a Doctor who used humor help children and families dealing with serious illnesses.
Darren also loved animals, especially dogs. We called him Uncle Darren because he helped take care of our dog, Buddy. He loved to watch the dog whisperer, and attempted to use some of the techniques with Buddy (ha-ha). Even after Buddy went blind, hed know when we were walking past Darrens apartment. He led us straight to the stairs and insisted on visiting. Buddy will miss you too- Uncle Darren.
Darren loved his friends. Even when he was going through so much, he would listen to other peoples problems. Whenever I called him on the phone, wed end laughing about our crazy lives. I cant put in words how much we ALL will miss you Darren.
Darren loved his family. He loved his Mom most of all. Darrens whole mood would change when he found out she was coming to town. He often joked about her trying to clean up his apartment, but loved every minute of her visits. He knew how lucky he was to have such a great Mom.
Despite Darrens ongoing health challenges, he managed to live life filled with, fun, and family and, friends. This past year presented some big challenges for Darren, and I am comforted to know that he is not suffering anymore.
In the words of Margie Lindeke,Heavens getting one helluva D.J.!
Love you. my friend, Sue Breed

I had no idea...
Usually, he emails me when he has been sick and battling chemo again. Damn...
MBS was a better place while he was here. He may not have had the greatest football knowledge on the planet, but the kid loved his Bengals and hated Mikey. You cant argue with that.
To that, I toast DUNN4QB.
You will be missed, bro...

Like many others, I knew Dunn only from his posts, yet I feel the loss. It's easy to see how strongly he left his mark here, especially with MBS-style humor. I'm sure I'll think of him whenever I see the Mikey Laughing photo or the Gene Wilder movie still.
RIP, Dunn. This one's for you:

I have lurked here for a number of years, just never post. Living outside the area I don't get to see many games and so many folks here have adequately covered the failings of the MFB. Having said that I just want to say that this is truly sad and my heart goes out to Dunn's family. He was a happy go lucky young man despite all of his medical issues, thats strength we all should be blessed to have.
I could tell that he enjoyed this place by all time spent here and his presence will be sorely missed.
RIP Darren.

This is really sad news. "Dunn" was by far the most prolific poster on the site and he clearly felt comfortable here as if were his home. He guarded mbs.com against trolls like a rabid dog. No one cared more about this place than him. He also hated intolerance and battled it at every step. Some gave him a hard time for occasionally bringing up his medical history, but I think the humor he used in the fight against Mike Brown insulated him (and us) against the frightening reality of his situation. Things will be a lot quieter around here now. R.I.P Darren.

I am so sad I can't even muster the strength to bash mike brown or murf today, even with murf screaming for a RB or WR with the 6th pick and saying the o-line is fine because we have dennis rolland -- oops, I managed to bash murf anyway, that one was for you Dunn.
R.I.P. and if there is a God, he owes you one so please explain to him why mike brown deserves to go next. Though I would much rather you be here with us, having someone working on the inside might be exactly what mbs needs.

Based on occasional comments made by MBS posters at various times, I was curious about Dunn's health. But I couldn't bring myself to search through the message board for that information. It didn't feel right. Until now.
Maybe some other short-timers will take solace from this old thread. He did say goodbye once. From 2005:
"If something goes wrong I want everyone to know how much I enjoy coming here at MBS. Thanks for putting up with me, especially murf. There's lots of colorful character's. Plus there is, unlike myself, very knowledgable football fans whom I've learned allot from... even murf."

Hello Bengals fans. I am one of Dunn/Darren's friends in Durham NC. It's great to know that Darren will be remembered by so many in such a nice way. I remember the first time Darren showed up at the local sports bar wearing an MBS.com t-shirt. That was my first inkling of the true hate that exists towards this man. I will miss the funny emails he would send relating to the Bengals, especially the ones that made fun of the stealers. I plan to visit the sports bar this Saturday night to raise a toast(make mine rye) to Darren knowing that many of you will be doing the same in Florence.
I also posted the eulogy delivered by Susan Breed at his memorial in Durham. It should give you all an idea of what a truly great guy Darren was.

Wow, what a sad thing to see when I logged in today. News of an untimely passing is always shocking (I think I'm still in the denial phase), but I did have a worry that I would log on one day to hear that Dunn had passed away because I knew that he was battling tumors and cancer. It seems to me like he mentioned months ago that he was battling another tumor. He never said much and was funny and upbeat, so it was easy to think everything was ok.
When I first found this board, Dunn and his beer avatar was one of the first things that I noticed. I used to get a laugh out of his posts, especially his posts to Murf. I enjoyed reading the board and decided I would have to join. His posts always made me laugh regarding Mike Brown, football, Murf, and Oldschool, and they were and always will be a staple of this board. Dunn protected this board from trolls, in particular DW. Sometimes he got a bit paranoid about it (lol), but it was only because he loved this board so much. Dunn and I sparred over religion and politics, but I always liked him and agreed with his football posts. I can't imagine this upcoming season without him. Who is going to bring humor to the losing and make fun of Murf's sheople predictions and defense of Mike Brown? I wish he could have seen the Bengals win a Super Bowl before he passed away, but if it's any consolation, we probably won't get to see the Bengals win a Super Bowl before we die either.
I offer prayers for his soul and his remaining family members.
DUNN,

What a terrible way to start the morning. Funny out there in cyberspace, it is difficult to bring in the idea of age, health and mortality. I knew Dunn was sick from time to time, that he had the tumor issues, but I always thought of him as timeless, all the posters as timeless. You log on, you have a look and there is Dunn... simple as that, and that was not supposed to go away. Dunn was a pillar to this place and it will never be the same.

Dunn was a good man. Even when I would post a thread that never got many responses, he was always kind enough to retort something. That's is a very nice quote above, and as a non-practicing Catholic, I hope he is getting to bang these 72 virgins at the golden gates everyone on that side of the world talks about receiving, because he did enough good work here for all of us.

He also said that Bengals president Mike Brown, along with Lewis, is concerned with the club-record list of players on injured reserve this past season and the team plans to examine the issue.

If you went to legacy.com and put in Darren Steele you could sign his guestbook memorial (or follow the link up above on this thread). His Mom came here and posted, its the least we could do for the family. I did so a few days ago. Its a nice gesture.

My condolences to his family, and the board members. I did not know of his health problems. I am sorely saddened and sorry to hear of his demise.
Dunn was one of the first posters of the initial MBS group to welcome me here shortly after it all got started. In recent years I wondered why he spent so much time out here. His love of football, but contempt for Mike Brown (management) were obvious. Not so apparent, though, was his escape to a comfortable place, the place he felt a level of additional significance, and security - MBS.com, the place he was far away from the fears and challenges he faced behind the emptying beer glass and "murf" screen-name impositions.
More than anything I enjoyed his mostly entertaining engagements with certain posters, some pictures, and other creative artwork. However, recently he seemed to press it, to the point where he seemed to be actively fighting with some people, and I couldn't understand "why". Now I think I do. He was simply fighting a greater battle most of us couldn't see, and he found release in his security blanket.
As with all internet message boards, I failed, on a large scale, to recognize Darren, the man behind the screen-name. I am the worse because of it, and now regret it.
My hope is that he never took anything I said to him seriously (except the good stuff), that he didn't really hate God, but instead was just looking for an argument with someone in a quest we all share, and that he now knows I am not Falc (aka Old Schooler) or Goose.
Every soul on this planet has value, a place, and purpose, however long or short. I think Darren, the man, would agree that even includes Murf and Schooler. Dunn showed that much on this board, and I'm sure, Darren, in this world, in the many things we couldn't see. Yes, we have suffered loss, because he impacted our "world", but turn loss into gain, for yourself, and others: Find your way to the truth, follow it, share it, and don't make the mistake I outlined above.
Sometimes we only get 1 chance.

He stood next to me for the past 8 years at Devine's.
We screamed at our teams, laughed, joked and swore when needed.
I am proud and happy to have known Darren for so long.
He was and always will be my friend and buddy.
The first time I met his Mom and step-Dad was when he was in the hospital,
and I jumped in bed with him and hollered
"Now I have you where I want you"!!! (his step-Dad didn't know what to think)
We talked and knew he was scared, but never mentioned it unless he wanted to.
All I can say was he thought the world of all of you, especially that you
accepted him as he was, and that's what he wanted the most.
I am sad that I have lost my buddy and friend.
I am honored to have known him at all.
One of his Bengal caps will be next to me when the season starts
And when the Bears and Bengals play this year,
I will hear us degrading each other. (smile)

Is that when you die--you finally realize what you've ever questioned. All the answers are stated before you almost instantaneously. All is revealed. To me--that would be a big slice of heaven. I could go to sleep peacefully after that.
And if I'm correct, Dunn's freaking out because he realizes that there truly was another poster named Goose--and that Goose wasn't FALC.
I wish I were joking when I said that Goose is indeed real--he still lives in Northern Cincinnati, has 3 kids, and is a rabid f*cking Steelers Fan. I'm not joking. Goose is real. He's not Tom Cruise's Radio either. Instead--he's something much much worse. A Horrible Towel Waver. That's it. And even worse than that--he actually likes Kordella Stewart. Sweet Jesus--that's painful.
And that's all I'm revealing about Goose's true identity.

Why's that? If I died, I doubt Darrin would have let up on me.

Sorry to hear the news about Dunn.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I only browse this site every now and then and saw today he passed away. Really a shame to see such a contributor to this board is no longer with us. I didnt really know Dunn but from his posts he seemed like a good guy who was passionate about football and the Bengals. I would actually check this board on the basis that I new he would post articles related to the Bengals on a daily basis. A lot of the information he posted I couldnt find on other sites but this one.
Any way I wish his family the very best during this time and I am sure everyone here will miss Dunn.

We'll miss you, Dunn. All of us. All one of you.
All who knew him closer than I did - I am so very sorry. And I hope that you all, as we will, remember Dunn for his...well, his intrinsic goodness. Sick, healthy, and in between, he was without doubt a good man. What more can be asked of any of us?

A very insightful posting. Darren was angry the last few months. I had encouraged him to turn his anger to the tumors and not to people. It was a difficult time for him. He did the best he could.

Haven't logged on for a while, but this came as a shock and my thoughts go out to his family.
Normally a post with 70+ posts would see me wizzing through it, speed reading the replies, reasonings and retorts....but this time I have read every single post, and the strangest thing happened; I feel sad for this chap who lives thousands of miles away in a different country and who I only knew by some weird nickname.
As many of you have posted, better than I can, he will be missed. Missed by us lot of misfits on this insignificant web site, but missed far greater by others who we will never know.
Tonight I will open a bottle of wine, and just reflect on stuff...like LIFE.
RIP Dunn.

Hope it was a good bottle. I think Dunn would be surprised at the response. It does say something about a guy though, who had the ability to gain such respect only by posting insignificant nothings on this board. You could just tell he was a decent dude with a big heart, who liked to laugh. Who doesn't like a guy like that?

WOW!! Like someone else had posted I was hoping this was some terrible attempt at humor. He was also such an "interesting" member of the MBS family. For years, love him or hate him or really really hate him he was never dull or boring. His posts & replies were always one of the things I looked forward to seeing when I logged on. I didn't realize he was sick. I would have loved to have met the man & had a beer with him. I'm jealous of you guys that actually got to meet him. The one silver lining in this whole horrible situation, you know he is up in heaven right now kicking the crap outta Louis Billups, like all good Bengal souls should.
We Bengal fans will always Miss you DUNN!! This year Dunn when you are up there watching from the best seats in the house & you see our possible game winning kick start heading wide right...can you help us out with a lil' heavenly Hook back to center?
My God's Peace & Mercy be upon you Friend!!!!

Sorry, I saw that last picture...while reading this thread was listening to a song by Ray Lamontagne "A falling through". It's kind of wussy, but while i was reading it, the chorus is basically "why did you go away?" So i guess i had to post..Anyway so fitting...i had my toast tonight!
Dunner the humour was uncanny!

Storm,
I have been brewing beer on and off a couple years. You got to go to Listerman's, it is right near Xavier. Best brew supply place in the city but you wouldn't know it was there if you didn't know to look. Just slightly higher prices than the same stuff online, but they will answer any question you will have.
And start stocking your bottles, no twist offs. Bottles are by far the biggest expense so recycle (guess that means you will have to start drinking only good beer, oh well).

..had a couple of buddies who were way into it. Got high end equipment, the whole nine yards. Most of the shhit they brewed was shhit. One of them passed away due to cancer at 40 and that ended that. I had one of their beers a couple of months after he was buried and it was absolutely fantastic, a pale ale. Wished I could have shared it with him. Anyway if you are going to do this hobby with gusto, you may want to pick the other dude's brain as they did it for years. Let me know, I might even brew some with you. BTW, the darker and more bitter beers work best, cause any "off" tastes get hidden. A budweiser type is hard to pull off cause any off taste is readily noticeable.

This sub-thread is making me thirsty.
"BTW, the darker and more bitter beers work best, cause any "off" tastes get hidden."
Nerdy fact: Our taste for bitterness evolved to detect poison. A little bit of hops adds character to a beer. Beyond a certain point hoppiness is a pure affectation. A gentleman that writes for my local paper has an enviable job reviewing beers. He admitted once that it can be tricky to distinguish between hoppy beer and beer that has gone skunky. No doubt the aficionados will never let him live it down, but "Beer Man" was right.

I prefer dark beers, when I was in high school we drank a lot of Lowenbrau Dark, right now I like more of a lighter dark beer such as NewCastle Brown Ale, BBC Nut Brown, Shiner Bock and Mich Amber Bock.

I truly wish I had a taste for dark beers ... I have tried and tried ...but I can only drink a lager beer. 99% of the time i drink Miller Lite. I like the taste.
I do a monthly poker tournament where the host buys the beer... they all love me cause they get off cheap. But it hurts my wallet when it is my turn to host. Fukkin $13 for a 6 pack of schmittuks or whatever spring ale crap...thats a rip.

Dacow, Old Speckled Hen, excellent choice. I assume its the Greene King version. We Brits do know how to brew good beer. If you can get hold of it try some Honey Beer (yes beer with honey as one its main ingredients) sounds weird but it's great chilled on a hot day.

We actually found a keg of Lowenbrau Dark back in the middle 90s. It was the best sh*t ever and went fast.
Good call on NewCastle too. I love that sh*t man. The Brits sure can make a good brew.

It is so nice that you would want to pay your respects to Darren. Darren was cremated. I have his ashes here in Florida. I may later decide to spread them over Durham because he loved living there so much.
Please see my new post about honoring Darren's memory by supporting his friends in Durham. They are walking to raise money for the Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Clinic at Duke Hosptial.
