Guess they had to get one proper crook in the draft!

The one-two punch of Smith and Maualuga on Day 1 sounded intriguing. But the one-two-three punch of Smith, Maualuga, and Johnson dampened my enthusiasm. When all three of your top picks have maturity and/or character concerns, you're asking for trouble.
Then they took Bernard "Red Flags" Scott in the 6th. It's enough to make me reassess my first impressions about this Bengals draft. It feels too much like 1997 when the Bengals took Reinard Wilson, Corey Dillon, and Tremain Mack. Dillon worked out (mostly), but that was it.
Oh well, it will be interesting to see how things turn out.

Yes, but you're already living with Shirley, Joseph, Hall, Benson, Chad, Tank, and Henry. Just add him to the mess, couldn't hurt right Bronco?
Man, when did you start homering out?

When I started realizing that none of thos guys are "thugs" (with the exception of Tank and Henry).
The only problems with this team (legal wise) in the last 2 years have been DUI's and Weed possession.
Hell, even Tank and Henry have been clean the last 2 years. The character issue is not as bad as it seems. If you disagree with me, change my mind about the last 2 years. Please dont bring up DUI's and weed possession - if I counted those as "character" issues, I would have zero friends - LOL.

Character record isn't as bad as it seems? Since when? When your record is this for the past 2 years:
2007: 7-9
2008: 4-11-1
That should change your mind alone about the character issues not being as bad as they are. The record speaks for itself. There are things happening in the lockerroom that screams LOSERS. It all started with the Chad swinging at a position coach at halftime of a home playoff game in which they were winning. It's gone downhill since that moment. When you have cancers in a lockerroom setting--the fix is simple, you cut the cysts out of the equation and move on or the situation just worsens. That's the current plague of the team right now. A whole lot of bad attitudes = losing.

8. Carson not taking games over in the 4th quarter.
9. Moonlight Graham not making clutch field goals.
10. Fitzpatrick being horrendous.
Sorry boss, character isnt up there. I know its easy to bash on the Bungs because of the 2006 season, but I really dont think character is that bad right now (though I would get rid of Chad in a heartbeat if he didnt kill the cap).
EDIT - Fitzpatrick's play should go higher - he was really bad. I would move him to #4 or #5...

When you take a look at a divided lockerroom like the Bungles had last year and will have this year--THEN CHARACTER IS AN ISSUE. Currently, it's a plague for the Bungles.
However, it's Mike Brown's f*cking fault that Marvin doesn't have more player control off the sidelines. That team could possibly be tight if the Warden had more control of the inmates.
So your list is f*cked, sir. Your number 1 is right on. Mike Brown is the biggest problem of that team. #2 has to be player character issues in key positions.

There you guys go again, arguing the abstract when the answer is so simple.
It's not been a matter of character, play calling, clock management or attitude. It's been a pure, simple issue of noncompetitive personnel on the field.
Marvin proved in 2005 that he could win and sometimes win big with average talent. The talent level on this team has reverted back to its putrid base since.

Falc, you are arguing (I think) about Chad Johnson. Chad has never been in trouble with the law. I would love to see him gone, but not under his terms and not for 5 million against the cap. Small market teams cant afford to have 5 million go for nothing.
CIN-C-STAR - I do think you give 2005 too much credit (so does Murf). Go back and look at the schedule and then look at how we did against teams with winning records, it might shock you.
The defense proved to me last year that they are close to being legit. The offense...well...hmmm...you migth win on that point, but I think they get a ton better with Brat gone and Zampese promoted...

"Ive heard it before. The character issue isnt an issue because there have only been DUI and Mary Jane arrests in the past two years . Blah, blah, blah. Thats reaching for an excuse because you think something is improving.
Chad swung at a coach. Chad got a raise. Player blabbing to the press got cut. Coaches have no power over the players. The players do not perform like a team because they dont have to listen to the coaches. The players only perform to try and better themselves, not the team. Players stop carrying out assignments from coaches during the games in an effort to seek their own stats (whether the coaches are qualified to actually coach or not is another issue). The TEAM loses. Getting arrested and having character issues do not go hand in hand. Jeremy Shockey and Tiki Barber were never arrested for anything (to my knowledge). The Giants improved dramatically by getting rid of them. No more me guys only team guys. Forget Plax. He was never arrested until shooting himself like a idiot and was never a problem like Shockey and Tiki (meaning me first screw the team translation: character issues).
And thats beyond Chad, his act just lets the others follow suit. Its been totally downhill since he had his hissy fit .. 8-8 then 7-9, then 4-11-1. It probably would have been worse with Palmer. With Palmer, Bratkowski goes pass whacky. The run game sucked last year, but hidden stat the defense stayed off the field longer, was more rested, played better . Shocking, isnt it?
Do you actually like the Smith pick?? You take the laziest guy in the draft that didnt care he cost himself millions of dollars and you are going to plug him into the spot to protect Palmers blindside?? Hahahahahahahahahahaha The coaches dont control the lockerroom, so this guy is going to sloth his way through training camp and then get Palmer drilled. And a fifth rounder named Luigs or Guichiuc sounds like the same thing."

--- What??? The Bengals punted more last year than any year in the previous 10 years or something (and Kyle Larson still sucked). Defense off the field longer? Are you high? did you even watch the game? LOL - The defense was constantly on the field because Fitzpatrick blew donkey dikks. LOL
"Do you actually like the Smith pick?? You take the laziest guy in the draft that didnt care he cost himself millions of dollars and you are going to plug him into the spot to protect Palmers blindside??"
-- How is he the laziest guy in the draft? Talking to an agent? Or listening to the agent and leaving the combine? Which one of those means he is lazy. The guy is 340 pounds. Deal with it. He DOMINATED THE SEC. Helllo, Falc, anyone fukking home????????? The best conference in the country and he dominated it...Game set match. Keep talking about his man boobs. Just remember not to cast too many stones on that issue! LMAO!
And I really dont give a sh!t about Mary Jane or DUI's. I sure as hell dont want the entire team from BYU on the field...

Actually, Dacow what you have described is in my opinion an organization issue and not a chacter issue. Kids coming out of college have the ability to adapt to their surroundings. Tons of kids that have character questions on them when they get drafted do fine...some are pig headed and don't do fine. I think Chad is a prime example of someone that did pretty well in the beginning and then fell off not because he is a scumbag but because the Bengals are terrible to work for and allow bad charcter.
Remember when you heard about Chad sleeping on the couch down at the stadium and how hard he worked for Marvin? They used to say nothing but good stuff about the kid... now he's trouble... he got ticked off... didn't get disciplined, instead got rewarded..figured nothing was going to change about his situation, so why not spout off???
Organization...i.e. Mike Brown issue.

No, all said was that character (as it pertains to arrests because that is what we were talking about) is not as big an issue as it was 3 years ago. Going from 14 arrests in 10 months to like 3 in 2 years is obviously an improvement. Unless you live in your buddies warped world of "new math"...

From Bernard Scott's blog (pre-draft)
"Greatest blessings
3/25/2009
by Bernard Scott
Well, it's been a busy month. I went to the Combine, had my pro day at ACU and have done a couple of private work outs for a couple of NFL teams. I am ready for the draft to get here. Pro Day was kinda cool, I didn't do some of the events there cause we decided to let my Combine times stand but it was great to see Coach T and Johnny Knox and the rest of the guys.
I did an interview with ESPN radio yesterday. They asked some tough questions but I thought it was a good interview. They asked a lot about the mistakes of my past. I didn't mind it tho, I like to be challenged, it makes me realize how blessed I am to be where I am.
Whenever I talk about my past, I realize that I own my past it doesn't own me. I know that there are alot of good people who love me and believe in me. When I do the right thing it's not just for me but it's for them as well. When people believe in you, you owe them a great debt and you have to pay it everyday. I know that God has a plan for me. I know I have made some mistakes but I have learned from them. Hopefully soon, I will able to prove that in the NFL.
If you have somebody who believes in you no matter what you have done, thank them cause that is the greatest blessing you can get.

..."Actually, Dacow what you have described is in my opinion an organization issue and not a chacter issue."
It is an organization issue in that they ALWAYS, ALWAYS, draft "talent" or athletic ability over what it really takes to be a great team football player. Me first players don't have good character, whether they commit crimes or not.
Talent is what they draft and then they don't give the head coach authority to remove the malcontent. The head coach does not determine the final roster for instance. Once the players who are malcontents know that anything they do has no consequences, then its all over. The me first, malcontents do whatever the fuch they want and the rest of the players give in or give up. Thats an organization problem named Mikehole.
Drafting talent over a real football team player is the start of the problem, failing to allow the head coach to have a pair and cut those who will bring the team down finishes the problem. That recipe gives you 18 years without a playoff victory. Rise, repeat.
