We have too many people who feel that thier lifes work is to dictate to others what thier morals are!
Yes, the same idiots that voted for the Halo rule in strip clubs and pushed for the smoking ban in bars.
Ohio is one of the hardest hit areas in job loss. Why?
Well, during a time economic failures, we have the sinner brigrade. A bunch of hypocritical morons, running around shuting down business after business, based on morals and values.
The strip club vote was one of the all time worst.
Thousands of people lost jobs over that bullsh!t.
I don't see the Taliban offering any jobs to any of these people that they shut down.
We should have casinos/slots/strip clubs.
If you don't like these places, or you are a weak individual that can't handle things in moderation, then don't walk into those places.
I don't gamble much, go to the boats in Indiana here and there, take a 100.00 with me, and when that is gone, I am done.
Others lose thier entire savings...that is there problem.
I drink beer from time to time, others, stay drunk for years, that is there problem.
Ohio was in the top 10 of the NO FUN STATES!
I wonder why?
Best part about it, the man leading the charge in most of these issues, is a former porn addict.
Typical, when you look into the history of the born again, save the world folks, they are the ones that could not handle things in moderation to begin with, so they feel the need that you need to follow thier life style.
There was a Rep from around the Cloumbus area, that wanted all bars to be closed at 12:00am.
Said it was for the safety of society and would get drunk drivers off the streets.
They will not stop trying to close down the alcohol business...the Smoking Ban was a hidden attack from MADD, another group that is against anything in Ohio.
"Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

Murf you are hilarious. MADD is against Ohio? Lobby groups are as bad as the Taliban? I agree with your points but your logic is frightening.
Bronco, I honestly think it is because the proposals being offered are terrible and just enough people see through them to join with the moralists to defeat them -- but I don't think the Bible thumpers are approaching a majority.
It has more to do with what Storm said. Ohio politicians, Dem and Repub, do not support private casinoes in OH because they fear it will interfere with lottery revenues. Instead, they try to expand the lottery revenue by offering state run keno in bars, but that ain't as tenth as cool as playing cards in a luxury casino and everyone knows it.
As a result of this political failure, the last vote the people had on it, and their will be a similar proposal on the ballot this year, was funded by Penn National Gaming. Huge gambling outfit, billions in revenue. They proposed amending the state constitution to allow casinoes only at certain locations that would be run exclusively by Penn National. They tried to sell it as "controlled gaming," not out-of-control, gas-station gaming, but in essence we would have given them a constitutional monopoly in return for promises of more school funding. They would have a low and frozen tax-rate, and in exchange some scholarship fund was going to be setup and doled out by the Gaming Ethics Commission (lmao -- I'm sure it would take all of five seconds to buy that entire board and 3 generations of their relatives). They used the school funding argument to sell the lottery originally, and schools all over the state constantly need new levies to run and we are being told are still falling apart and getting poor results -- so people were pretty jaded by that and they do remember. The proposal this year is the same privately-funded initiative paid for by the people who stand to make the most. It doesn't have the scholarship caveat, but we will see what they came up with instead.
Still, polls show that Ohioans support legal gambling. Until either a fair proposal is offered voluntary by the gaming industry (doubtful) or Ohio politicians reverse course and craft a well thought out plan that would actually benefit the people of Ohio (again -- doubtful), I am not confident it will happen. I didn't vote for the last one but would definitily vote for limited gaming decided by an open bidding process with as much as the revenue as possible going to offset taxes or back to the people somehow.

MADD was the hidden force behind the Smoke Ban in Ohio!
They joined up with the Cancer society and got enough idiots to follow them, based on the "save the workers".
I don't have an issue with a smoke free business, as a nonsmoker, it is nice to walk out of a bar and not smell like an ashtray, but the problem is not that I like or dislike the smell, it is that people who don't support the bars, made that choice for a private business owner.
It should have been left up to the individual bar owners and if you don't want to walk into a business that allowed smoking, then you had a choice.
Now, you have no choice, thousands of jobs and family owned business in the state of Ohio are goen, along with the taxes they generated and the sales taxes they generated with the vendors that supported the business.
Same with the Strip clubs...more than a few girls lost thier jobs. Accountants, vendors, DJ's, bouncers.....all made money, all paid taxes and all are losing thier jobs.
The lobby groups all are in bed with the relgious nuts.
Yes, the religous nuts are a step away from treating women like breeding animals and dictating prayer services.
those innocent lobby groups...are the ones pushing the cowards in office to step and fetch.

..the gambling issue really bothers me. Now I go to the boats once or twice a year and lose my 100.00-200.00 a trip, but I don't understand the logic of the pro-gamblers, at least the versions Ohio and Ky has put forth.
Casino style gambling should either be illegal or legal. I think the people should decide. What I don't like is for them to say, well its illegal for any company to do, except for the one company we decide that gets to do it. (ie. horse tracks, Out of state gambling co. etc) Why give a monopoly to one individual or co. and shut everyone else out????
Legalize it and zone it, or make it illegal. Any other course of action is just garbage and illogical.

There is no garbage or crime around the casino's in Indiana.
You hear about the Hookers and drugs and litter...yet, never seem to see any of that down there.
that is a scare tactic from the bible thumping nut jobs that want to control you liek the taliban.
The area around the Casino would be about the safest place downtown.
The only garbage and crime that would be around there, is already there, and they will be driven off.
They want to build it where they should have built the baseball stadium, behind Greyhound...nothing there during the day besides parking, and nothing there at all at night.
We are idiots if this gets voted down again.
Well, we all know that we are idiots, since we keep voting in the morons that keep winning free rides.
If you don't handle gambling well...don't go to a Casino.
If you don't like tits in your face....don't go to a strip club.
If you don't like smoking....don't go to a smoking bar.
If you don't handle drinking well...don't go to a bar.
If you don't like porn videos...don't go to a hustler store.
Simple...yet, some don't understand it.
I don't like religion...so I don't go to church...see how easy that is.
God has stolen money from people, just like the Casino...how many stories of old people sending in their life savings to some snake oil preacher to be healed?

What is the basie Federal govt guideline, and do you agree or not agree? My thoughts are gambling should either be illegal and found nowhere, or legal, but, like any other business subject to being in places where it is properly zoned, ie, not in the middle of a residential area. If legal, then many companies should be able to try their hand in it, not just one industry (ie horses in Ky) or one company. Why give a monopoly? If illegal, then just don't let it happen. My take.

The preachers announced a lawsuit vs the State of Ohio, if they allow slots.
Can you scream hypocrit any louder?
If you are a church, you don't pay taxes...so you have no say in what happens in gov't.
You can't get a free ride under the umbrella of seperation of church and state, then try to demand laws based on your religious morals.
If you want to try and force your religion on everyone else, then pay taxes and follow the rules of paying off cowards in office.
The Catholic church is in on this deal too.
I wonder why they would fight casinos?
Oh, thats right, maybe b/c they have mobile casinos going from church to church!
Hypocrits!
Pathetic...keep your morals to yourself and stop trying to force everyone else to follow your morals.

Dictate our morals? You mean like the cronies in Washington with the proposed universal health care and cap and trade legislation? In fact, ALL our laws make a moral statement of sorts. For example, being without health care is "bad" or producing carbon emissions is "bad".
As for slots, put pure and simply, it has been referred to as the crack cocaine of gambling of which the poor tends to pay the most of, so put your religoin bashing aside please!!
As far as it being legal, the same question should be asked about prositution and leaglizing drugs. If you are not going to make a moral judgment on gambling then why these other activities? After all, its a free country ain't it? I'm just waiting for the state to open brothels and coke houses to get more tax revenue. You know, its only a matter of time.

You still did not refute my assertion that laws are simply the morals of the state. Clearly they are.
As for everyone agreeing that prostitution and illegal drugs should be legalized using the same logic and morals as you do justifying gambling, kudos!! I saw an artilce, not religious BTW, about slot machines being the crack cocaine of gambling. However, since you have no problem with the state selling crack cocaine, who cares if slot machinges are indeed the crack coacain of gambling?
Of course, people will do what people will do no matter if it against the law or not. However, that should NEVER be a reason not to have a law, It is simply piss poor reasoning/morals to say such a thing. For example, murder is illegal, however, people will continue to do it. So does that mean we should legalize it? Nuff said.
As for your morality, however, it seems to be that people should be allowed to do as they please so long as they are not "hurting" anyone else other than themselves. And since you don't see anyone getting hurt doing drugs or engaging in prosistution or gambling, other than the people who choose to do such things, it should be legalized. Can we agree this far?
Now having said all that, I take issue with the state promoting behavior that is addictive. I have sympathy for people who dabble in such acitivity, no matter how idiotic, and then become additcted. Their choice to engage in such behavoir is then impeded as the shackles are slowly applied to their free will. I also am not going to support the state in participating in promoting such addictive behavior as a result.
One more thing to mention is that even though people may only hurt themsevles engaging in such high risk and idiotic behavoir as listed above, they still live amongst us. That means that poor saps who become addicted to slots and loose all their money have families that are hurt, They have marriages that are broken and children who have to go without basic needs. In addition, they have society as a whole who have to pay for their mortgages that the default on as their homes go into forclosure.
In conclusion, go ahead and promote state sponsered vice, but realize that it will be to societies detrament. Of course, I'm sure you could care less.

Poor example.
Murder infringes on the rights of another (namely their life).
Gambling, Drugs and Prostitution are crimes that do not infringe on the rights of others.
Thus, the difference...

Honestly, I believe if you get nailed selling drugs, you do life in prison.
I think if you get caught with drugs, you do rahab in a center for a year...second offense, life in prison.
Hookers...are harmless creatures. Dudes, need some sex, she provides him with some attention, gets 10 bucks, moves on in life.
I don't care what the preachers tell me about sex, it is none of your business or mine, if dude down the street is getting sausage tossed by some skank.
I don't care, and if you made it legal and had a brothel, they would be off the streets and tested for STD's.
As you have it now...it will stop it, only push it further into the dark alley.
I am not a big gambler, work to hard to make money to give it to some rich dude.
I don't care if Joe the plumber goes down there and blows his entire paycheck...not my business.
Alcohol is addictive and has ruined more lives than slot machines, so why not ban that again?
I understand some people will fall under the spell of casino and lose money, but news flash, they are dong that about 20 minutes away, it is not like anyone in this region is waiting for them to open a casino here before the go to a casino...
So why not build it here, generate revenue and taxes and employ some folks in this city, instead of Indiana?
You can't babysit society...I understand that is a liberal dream, but it simpyl does not work.

So let me get this straight, you are not going to outlaw prostitution but you are going to make them get checked out for STD's and make them get off the streets? LOL.
As far as alcohol, I would agree. But does that mean the state should sponser it by selling it? Could they not make a moral stand and say its "bad" by not legalizing it? That does not mean they hunt people down for it or even enforce such laws does it?

I thought I clarified this point. The reason everyone agrees that murder should be illegal is because it directly infringes on another persons rights. However, with gambling, prositution, and illegal drugs, this is not the case. That is how the majority define their morality around here it appears. That was what I was trying to say.
However, society is still damaged with activity that simply "harms" the individual. In addition, they often become addicted to such activity with their free will impaired. They become more like slaves than people who are making decision of their own free will. And lastly, society as a whole often is "harmed" through such activity even though not harmed directly the initial activity itself. Harm to society often comes later as the they feel the reprecussions of their actions. No man is an island to himself.
So is this enough reason to outlaw certain types of activity? That is the question society must ask themselves.
And one last comment, from my observations society as a whole typcially forms their morality to that of positions of authority. That means the state, your parents, your teachers, or your clergy. For example, before slavery was made illegal, the general consensus was that it was "OK". However, they outlawed it and society gradually turned the other direction. Abortion is another example, Before the powers that be made it illegal, the majority consensus was that it was immoral. However, as we see today the tide as turned the other way. You might say we are like sheep, the only question is who is our shepherd and have we gone astray?
Having said that, I think that the state should make moral stands against such things as prostitution/gambling/illegal drugs etc. However, enforcing these laws and the penalties for engaging in them is a whole other matter.

I think we all have sympathy for people who get addicted to such things like gambling, drugs, hookers, etc..... BUT, it was, as you said, their choice. They can face the consequences of their actions. Its THEIR fault for digging whatever hole they wound up in.
Murf is right... people here are driving 20 minutes away, giving Ohio money to Indiana. Hell, even when I lived in Columbus (Bronco can attest to this), people would take trips regularly to Argosy. And guess what???? in Toledo and Cleveland, they go to Detroit and Windsor. That is all money that could be going to OUR state, and NOT IN, MI, or Canada.
These preachers drive me up the wall. I cannot stand people who force religion on others or judge others for their beliefs, just because they walk a certain line that god says is "the right line". The churches are probably making such a fuss of it because they know that they will see a decrease in donations and revenue. Due to the fact that people donate their spare money to their churches, and if we had casinos in Ohio, or slots, or whatever, some of that money would go to casino's, hence they lose money.
Build the dam casino, downtown, where the stadium should have been. People can go or not go. Its their choice, but, it would help keep Ohio money in Ohio. Help generate jobs, help our local and statewide economy...... whats the downside??? Some bible beater says so???? F##K That. Stick to what you know.. your church and the people who CHOOSE to come to your church.

So you don't see God striking down someone who gambles, eh? Well if you ever bother the read the Bible, you would see that the majority of it deals with the affliction of the poor and those who take advantage of them. For me, gambling is one of the culprits. I don't think that God is critical of those caught in the web of gambing as those who promote the gambling. Having said that, there are those who care for the poor and have similar feelings as I do who are not religious. Go figure?
As for the bit about the fact that it should be legal in Ohio, otherwise people will go to another state, that is just rationalization. It in no way addresses the issue of whether gambling is good or bad for society. In fact, its just about greed otherwise.
And finally, even if this gets passed and you all get your way, guess what!! The state will continue to run with deficits and will continue to be broke. You know why? It is because government is out of control. All I hear is how to find ways to raise money, but never a way to limit our ever expanding government. The only difference will be that there will be a few more broken people out there all because of gambling.

Just find that to be funny.
If there is a God, I don't believe he has a concern for a casino and little granny trying to play slots.
He has a few other issues to deal with, oh I don't know...mabe genocide, muslims and Jews killing hundreds of thousands of people....
I am not bashing you b/c you are religious, whatever gets you thru the day...I just don't believe that a Supreme Being, is worried about a non issue like a casino in Ohio.

...at least this week. Stopped off at a casino on a trip in Michigan, and hit a mini royal in a three card let it ride hand for $400.00 and then won some more. On the way out, stopped for a shot of Tequila at the video poker bar, put in $20.00 and hit a Royal------$1K. Total time in casino---35 minutes. Withdrew, $1,500.00 Niiiiiiiiccce.

Won't generate nearly as much money as some think.
The Dayton Daily news had an article about the state parks needing money. How about the state develop Ceasar's Creek and make decent money charging fees and property taxes on the homes (well planned communities) that would pop up all over the lake? State dock, state park, taxable boat slips, ramp fees etc..

So where did I mention a penalty for breaking the law? In fact, is God forcing his moral code on you currently? He forces no one yet he feel obligated to let us know how to conduct ourselves for our own benefit. Likewise, the state should do the same. The penalties for gambling/prostitution etc are self evident. I think that just making them illegal is enough for me. As for the penalties they come with or without state intervention.
As for your proposal to mandate prostitutes off the street and getting checked for STD's and using contraception etc, I'm just dying to know how you will enforce this.

Sounds good Dacow, but I know a lot of people that gamble and I only hear about the good days..lol. If I didn't know any better, I would think casinos were nothing but a big money grabfest by the patrons.

Saints...
Why not do both?
The Casinos in Indiana...changed that place from a small little town, to a nice highly developed town, generating taxes form several places that would not be open if not for the casino.
People who want the stupid street car, claim that it would generate new business.
Yet, they ignore that side of the casino..the impact on the Duke Eneergy center would be huge, plus all of the other places around the casino...
It would be the biggest boom to this city has ever seen.

Nice Dacow, I have a similar story, several years ago I hit a royal on the vid poker machine at Grand Vic while at work, had a meeting with a prospect in Rising Sun and he couldn't make it so I stopped by the casino, put $4 in the machine, first game hit a flush but only played a quarter, next hand played a dollar and hit a royal, 4000 quarters, I cahsed out and left with with like $1006, total time in casino including parking and cashing out 20 minutes.

Best story I have..... in Vegas, hit a 5 game parlay on college football on a $20 ticket.... won $450 from that, then, played craps for about an hour and won another $500. That was the quickest $$$ I have won gambling.
Now, there was a time in Vegas that I spent about 5 hours at a blackjack table at the Luxor and won $3000.
But dont get me wrong.. I have done my fair share of losing but always pretty good about saying "once I lose $100, I'm walking". Maybe once or twice I chased my losings til about $400-$500, but only a couple times... my excuse.... I was drunk... hahaha

I have to say that I am either up a little or even at the casinos, most I ever lost was $200, but like SoCal once get down a $100 I quit, also once I get up over a $100 I quit too, there have been at least 5-6 times I was at the casino less than an hour because I hit quickly then walk out.
the $200 I lost was at the Muckleshoot in Seattle,, worst excuse for a casino, they are some cheatin bastards
