Let us stick with the fairness theme for a moment. Here are some other moves of Mike Brown's that were made over the past two years, moves that are looking pretty okay at present:
- Signing or re-signing Cedric Benson, Chris Crocker, Roy Williams, and Tank Johnson.
- Re-signing Chris Henry. (Heh heh. When posters at MBS are crabbing that he's not being used enough, the Arrested One must have something going for him.)
- Signing Antwan Odom. (We're sure to see signs at PBS that say something like, "Odom spelled sideways is d-O-o-m for Big Ben".)
I'm not saying that any of this makes the Bengals world beaters. Only that the moves were fairly decent. For me, it all this adds up to the same old, same old -- Mike Brown makes some nice moves. (Or rather allows them to be made.) But he doesn't do enough.
But if you want to acknowledge an unusually good decision, it's this.
- Allowing
Hard Knocks to film the team during training camp.
We were unimpressed, I know. But it has led to noticeable changes in the national media coverage. Now everybody is giving the Bengals some love, including, of all people, Peter King of
Sports Illustrated. It's as if they were a
bona fide NFL team or something. Even Bengals old timers are getting attention. Check out this piece from Pro Football Weekly on QB Greg Cook:

I'm just kidding about Chris Henry, by the way. Over the long haul, his return is a big net loss.
