What's Wrong with Matty Ice?

I see the Falcons only managed 12 points today against Chicago. The guess is that most of Matt Ryan's 319 yards came during garbage time, which must have come early, considering the scoring summary. One INT, no TD passes.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/gameflash/2011/09/11/4402_summary.html

Hey, didn't he get a new quarterbacks coach this year? The name escapes me at the moment. Who is that?

The Falcons play zero f*cking defense. As for passing-oriented offenses, sometimes you have days where you can't move the ball. Think rain, snow, or windy days.

Were they playing in Chicago in the rain?

Good question. I didn't watch closely enough to tell, but... Looking on the intertubes...

Terrible Offensive Playcalling

September 11 2011, 3:24 PM

Jesus. You talk about being terribly impatient. WTF is Matt Ryan throwing the ball 47 f*cking times for?

DID ATLANTA HIRE BOB F*CKING DRUNKOWSKI IN THE OFFSEASON?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

What's even more unforgivable are these two stats:

1. The Falcons weren't down by more than 13 points until late in the 3rd Qtr.
2. Michael GD Turner was 10 carries for 100 yards. WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!??!? Ahhhhh, Jesus f Christ. What a major coaching f*ckup. F*cking keep on handing him the GD ball. Was Turner injured after the 10th carry?

GD--that's some real f*cked up Bungle sh*t there.

Also of note--who would have thought that Jay Cutler would have better numbers than Matt Ryan at the end of the day?

I'm not sure if you were asking that in disbelief, Falc, or sarcasm and you didn't know.  Either way, LOL!  Bob Brat is Ryan's QB coach.

I watched (and, through my fiancee, heard) most of the game. Ryan played like $+!+; worst game I've ever seen him play. And honestly, I totally forgot about the Brat thing until reading this thread, but holy $#!+, would that ever make a lot of sense. If Ryan plays like that next week vs. the Eagles, he'll never live it down, especially since half the building (or more) will be filled with people salivating at the thought of every Atlanta QB not named "Vick" failing.

Turner looked good but had a key fumble that helped stop the Falcons ability to stay within one score.

Re: 47 throws, the Falcons '11 are in the same boat as the Bengals '10. Everyone told them "sure, you won a lot of games last year but you sucked in the playoffs...you'll never win it all unless you pass more." Ergo a new focus on an aggressive offense. Suffice to say, the Chicago Bears defense isn't the easiest one to premier that strategy against.

This could be a great subplot for the rest of the season.

The home team's QB that murf thinks is average at best despite a huge rookie contract vs. the road team's QB that murf hates more than any other QB in the universe who will also get more cheers than the home QB. I can see murf turning the Sunday Night game off before it starts this week to avoid high blood pressure! :-p

9 years in the league...beyond some nice xbox stats from time to time, please explain to me what Vick has ever accomplished at this point?
I am not even talking about Super Bowl Rings, that is a media and ignorant marker...

Anyway...
I don't think the Falcons are anything special.
Decent team with a decent qb...

The Eagles are nothing special.
Blitz Vick and force him to the weak side..(contain him, easier said than done, but teams do it)
Run the ball on a very below average run defense.

Game set Match...

As for Ryan..
Decent qb, nothing special.
In a league where about half the teams don't have a legit qb anymore, he can be ranked in the top 15.

Matty Disappoints Against Green Bay

No score for this post
October 9 2011, 8:58 PM

Sunday Night Football results for Matty:

18 for 32, 167 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, QB rating = 55.1%

Packers win, 25-14.

After two early TD drives, the second of which came early in the 2nd quarter, Ryan's production was... I can't look. Too gruesome.

This is not the Matty Ice we're used to seeing. Who's his new position coach again?

A Bungle-like Playoff Performance

No score for this post
January 8 2012, 1:10 PM

In a "Curse of the Ex-Bungle Fan" match-up, the Giants stomp the Falcons 24-2. Something had to give today, and Bo comes out on top of BMN. Congrats and condolences, respectively.

Game stats for Matty Ice:

24 completions in 41 attempts for 199 yards with 0 TD's and 0 INT's. QB rating of 71.1.

Also, zero offensive points. Ouch.

Overall, Ryan had typical year for him, but he didn't take a step forward, either. It could have been a lot worse with that quarterbacks coach.

Who is that guy?

Falcons screwed up by trading a ton of picks, IMO (Jones' potential notwithstanding). And Ryan has always had some limitations but he didn't develop AT ALL with BB in tow. Shame. Congrats to Bo, though. Giants showed up with swagger, Mike Smith tried to manufacture swagger for the Falcons, and failed.

Changes Afoot for Falcons Offense

No score for this post
January 10 2012, 8:44 PM

Mike Mularkey accepted an offer today to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. That leaves open the offensive coordinator gig in Atlanta.

Wouldn't you know, there just happens to be an offensive assistant already on the team who has quite a few years of experience in that capacity. Is it possible the Falcons might hire from within?

That's right folks, I give you the next possible offensive mastermind and intrepid play caller for the Atlanta Falcons -- Bob Bratkowski.

For your sake, BMN, and for all Falcons fans everywhere, I hope it doesn't happen. But it took me way too long to type this post, as I was laughing may a-- off the whole time. That would be way too funny.

Bring back Hue!
Bring back Hue!

The only good thing Petrino did during his cup of coffee here was at least hire promising coordinators (Hue & Zim). Not Hue's fault that he had dogfood to work with (seriously, when your QB options are Harrington, Leftwich and Redman and your top RB is a 32 year old Warrick Dunn, how much would you accomplish?).

But if they promote Brat, it's curtains for Matt and it's curtains for contention.

I think Brats biggest problem in cincy was the Head coach.
His second biggest problem was his lack of professionals on offense.

If you remember right, Palmer put up huge numbers with an azz sniffing tailback that could not fin a cut back lane for anything.
When he had a Healthy Perry, Chad trying to be a professional and TJ working on a new deal and Henry on the field, that offense was pretty hard to stop.

Then Marvin became Marvin and insisted on running the ball no matter what.
Chad became a Head Case
TJ thought he was a number 1
Henry died
Perry could never stay healthy.
Palmer got the blame for everything and became predictable.

Matt Ryan is an average qb.
he is stuck in the same type of system as Cincinnati.
Run..run...run...oh sh!t, it is 3rd and 9...pass.

I am not a fan of the Falcons, have hated them since the Dirty Bird then Vick came along, and now they have an idiot wideout that I can't stand, so the faster they fail, the more I like the season.
LOL

Whatever the cause, murf, the dude had TEN seasons. TEN. Go back and look at the season-by-season rankings of the offense and tell me what he accomplished in ten seasons.

Granted, he was working in a handicapped situation with Mikey as the owner and Giggles as the coach, but I don't see anything in Atlanta that he'd be working with that he has the answers to. If anything, he'll just inherit a lot of similar things he had in Cincy (and failed to accomplish anything with):

- A runner more noted for his power than any ability to cut (Johnson for Bengals, Turner for Falcons (although admittedly Turner is better than Rudi ever was, but both RBs were known for "needing to lose weight" and both ran significantly $#!++!er when they lost it because the weight was what helped their running style)). And secondary runners that underachieved when healthy or just got hurt all the time (Perry for the Bengals and Snelling for the Falcons).

- Receivers with great physical talent but prone to drops (in the Bengals' case the receivers had good hands but weren't in on "tough" catches, in the Falcons' case, Roddy's just ALWAYS had butter hands going back to the days Vick was starter and Julio looks like he may have the same problem)

- a HC who was the perfect hire at the time because he was needed to bring credibility back to the franchise at a time when it was sorely sorely needed (Marvin in '03, Smith in '08) but ultimately isn't the coach you want to bring you to the promised land (Marvin since '05 and Smith as of now) and (get ready for murf's favourite...) coaches not to lose.

- a team in love with "play one, up the gut to the left, play two, sweep to the left, play three, pass, rinse, repeat" playcalling. (Brat only ever passed on first down when it was ill-advised to do so...otherwise, loved to employ this same crap).

- a unit on the other side of the ball that will necessitate having to score since it is either going to allow a lot of points or hold the other team for a limited period of time before they get discouraged in the 3rd or 4th quarter.

I don't see how Brat has anything on his track record to remedy what the Falcons' problems are. If anything, he'd only exacerbate their problems.

im not hearing the best things about this BB guy but if he can do 3 things he'll be a significant improvement over MM...

1. revamp the o-line so it doesnt collapse after 2 seconds
2. remind roddy white how to catch the ball, and not fall over every time he does
3. teach turner another run play other than 'run up the middle'

if they can improve their play calling to something other than "hand off to turner on the 1st down. hand off to turner on the 2nd down" then theyll probably see improvements as well....

Hahaha!  This poster thinks Bob can improve the offense from the run, run, pass scheme and do something besides run up the middle on those two downs.  Little does this poster know, that's Bob's M.O.  I have little interest in the Falcons, but I will definitely keep an eye on them if Bob becomes offensive coordinator.  Those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it.

For you, BMN, this should rank right up there with the Steelers losing to Denver. Atlanta continues to hemorrhage coaches as Bratkowski goes to Jacksonville to help "fix" their offense.

And a big congrats to Matty Ice, too. There's decidedly less wrong with the aspiring franchise quarterback now.

Falcons New Coordinator

No score for this post
January 15 2012, 9:40 AM

Matty Ice has washed Mike Mularkey and Bob Bratkowski out of his hair. So who is the new offensive coordinator in Atlanta?

The inimitable Falcons have reached over to the neighboring state of Florida and plucked the guy who previously ran the dynamic, high-octane attack in Jacksonville. That's right -- Dirk Koetter, director of the veritable high-tech scoring machine that helped get Jack Del Rio fired.

BMN, what on God's green Earth do the Falcons think they're doing?!

I guess if you can't have Bob Brat, you'll take the next best thing.
