Joe Reedy is talking about back-to-back stats these days. From Part One:

One of the themes of the upcoming season will be for the Bengals to make back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in 30 years (and first time ever in complete seasons since 1982 was shortened due to a strike) and also win a playoff game for the first time since the 1990 season. ...

If the Bengals are going to take that next step this season, getting into the playoffs and winning a postseason game are paramount. ...

Ain't that the truth. But why call these "historical stats that might make you cringe"?

Cringe?!

Come on, Joe. We "cringe" only if we're surprised, or if we avoid thinking about it. There can't be many Bungles fans like that any more, even among the sheep. Anyway, looking forward to Part Two.

This is as good a time as any to update our MBS Back-to-Back Stats. To quickly review, we look at all NFL teams over the past 21 years, the time corresponding to Mike Brown's reign of terror. Teams receive points for doing good things in consecutive seasons (playoffs, winning record) and lose points for doing bad things in consecutive seasons (non-winning record, losing two-thirds of games). The table below provides the rest of the details.

[linked image]

The Bungs are still No. 1, but the Browns look poised to possibly surge ahead (or behind, depending on how you look at it). Nobody else even comes close. It all comes down to Mike Brown's team and the team named after his dad. So even if Mike Brown loses his ignominious distinction this year, it will presumably be with a heavy heart.

Thanks Psycho, that chart is a much needed reminder that no matter how much things change, there are always some things that stay the same.

I have to admit to a certain amount of sheepish optimism for the coming season. This is mainly due to my belief that MikeyBoy has relinquished some control over the draft room. The evidence for this is in the quality of the previous two drafts. They've both been very UN-Mikeylike. They haven't drafted a single David Klingler or Kijana Perry. The QB they drafted reminds me more of a workhorse than a pretty boy.

But I temper this optimism with my understanding of two things:

#1. History. We've seen this before and it's not real until it results in success as measured in wins.

#2. Culture. There is a still an underlying bungalization on this team that causes bizarre events such as Leon Hall tipping a last minute desperation pass perfectly in stride to the hands of Brandon Stokley. Or a field goal kicker who slips on a tiny patch of snow and misses a 22 year field goal that would have given them a playoff berth. These are weird anomalies that make me think God hates the Bengals. It's like having a child whom you dearly love, who is cursed with a chronic illness. He has good times and bad but he's still alive. But at the end of every day you're reminded that he's still sick. sad.gif

My own test will be the opening game on the road, against Baltimore, on the national stage of MNF. I expect them to lose a close game in this one; not just because of bungalization but also because Marvin Lewis seems to have a difficult time getting his teams ready for game #1 every year. I hope I'm wrong.

I took my son to Canton yesterday to visit the Pro Football HOF. A few things that stuck out- there is just ONE bungle in the HOF. The Steelers are very well represented there...should move the HOF there.

You can watch video of every HOF- and it seemed like every video showed a clip of the player playing against the bungles and embarrassing them.

I was really not all that impressed - its not as big as I thought - we walked through in less than 2 hours - there was no fan interaction nor was it kid friendly (besides the madden video game section - really?) - bit pricey.

I liked Fawcett stadium - I thought that was cool. And I noticed that the bungs/Reds of the 1930 sucked just as bad as they do today.

Good place to visit on 106F day

The HOF is one of the [only] perks to living in the Cleveland area. Must see for any NFL fan.

The Lake Erie perch is good, lots of god corned beef joints, and we have some really good pizzas and Italian foods as well. But it's funny...I look forward to my Cinci and Pittsburgh trips for the food.

2012 Season Goes Poof

After the loss to Miami, the Bungs are 3-2 and surely headed for 3-6. Cleveland is improving and desperate for its first win. Then comes Pittspuke, Bye, Denver, and New York Giants.

No way they recover from that.

Mike Brown's Redemption?

No score for this post
December 17 2012, 5:06 AM

It's Steelers Week and the Bengals are miraculously at 8-6 with Pittsburgh and Baltimore to go. Mike Brown is on the cusp of achieving his first back-to-back winning seasons (and playoff appearances) since inheriting Bungaldom in early 1991. He' definitely in danger of losing his title of Supreme Back-to-Back Flub Artist. Cleveland still only has five wins.

Unlikely as it may be, Mike Brown would redeem himself a little bit with another victory or two. And our MBS message board would (start to) look like a curio of an earlier time. Yikes.

The Steelers have owned the bungs forever - the bungs are the Steelers main pidgeon. Whether or not the bungs have more talent is questionable but the Steelers have the better system and will find a way to win. I don't see the steelers losing 4 in a row. This game is a little like the Chicago cubs against the Yankees.

There you go. Mike Brown did indeed redeem himself, you could say. The Bungles nip the Steelers at Pittsburgh to slip into the 2012 playoffs.

And...

It's a done deal about the back-to-back standings. Our favorite owner will slip behind the Cleveland Browns for top-of-the-line purveyor of ineptitude. The Browns are assured of another non-winning season, and the Bungs make the playoffs in back-to-back years.

But as I said above, the title will now go to the team named for his dad. So the achievement must come with mixed feelings, and ultimately, a heavy heart.

Now I suppose Joe Reedy can write Part II of his back-to-back discussion.

"There you go. Mike Brown did indeed redeem himself, you could say."

We will see in the WILDCARD when the Bungles get beat up by the Texans or whomever. I foresee the Bungles getting eliminated in the 1st game again.

And Mike F. Brown will be pissed because he lost money making the playoffs.
