Mike Brown could stand to learn at least one thing from Arthur Blank

After going to the game yesterday and seeing the overwhelmingly positive experience it was, one of many thoughts ran through my mind: The Falcons owe a lot to Mike Smith.

The Falcons were in disarray when he came in: the Petrino debacle (following a rather public decline of trust in Mora Jr.), Vick's arrest and the division had a new darling in the Drew Brees led Saints. The Falcons were probably the last of the four NFC South teams a free agent would have run to. Smith coached the Falcons to respectability and they became a consistent winner.

But the Falcons were also smart enough to cut ties with him (probably two years later than I would have, but still they did it). And true, they kept the GM with the atrocious haircut (who has made some horrible free agent signings in his day). But when they brought Quinn in, he was clearly the "next level" coach they needed. And now we can look at Mike Smith in a positive light in that he clearly was a coach that accomplished a lot to make Atlanta a consistent contender

The Bengals were a dirt-bad joke when Marvin came in. And Marvin deserves credit for turning the franchise from a laughing stock to a perennial playoff contender (and then laughing stock to perennial contender again). But he'll never get it because something that neither he nor Mike Brown want to admit is painfully obvious: he is not the man to take them to the next level. Instead of either Marvin gracefully stepping aside or Mike firing him, Mike has to hold his part of the GM strings and be Mr. Loyalty and pretend like this can happen with him in charge. It's depressing.

On the bright side, it's been great to see Sanu do as well as he's been doing,

Arthur Blank could also teach the clown........

1.How to connect positively to the fan base as well as the community
2.How to maintain a consistent direction for the team
3.How to hire somebody competent to run said team
4.How to stay the hell out of personnel decisions when you have no clue what you are doing
5.How to open your check book properly in free agency
6.How to fire Marvin Lewis

I agree on most points, but the overriding factor is that Arthur Blank is a good sports owner (and businessman, philanthropist, etc) while Mike Brown simply is not a good sports owner.

So in essence, while we are dealing in hypotheticals, the above hypotheticals would be the equivalents to "Dave Shula would have been a great coach if he did w, x, y, and z like Don Shula" or "Andy Dalton needs to do ____, ____, and ____ to be more like Joe Montana, or "the Cincinnati Bengals are exactly like the New England Patriots aside from if they did ____, _____, ____, and _____ better.

But back to the original point, building a stadium to better Jerry Jones to replace his only 25 year old stadium, dancing with the players in the locker room, doing his best to put the best scouting and coaching in place, etc. While Mike Brown cannot come up with an indoor practice facility that would be worth pennies on the dollar to the Falcons new stadium.

I agree with you, Sam, but with one big caveat. The Bungles limited success over the past eight years has made it terribly easy to imagine what they might have accomplished with only a few extra moves here and there. The type of moves that fall well within standard practice around the league. The type that even weak owners make. Like turning over head coaches.

Read today that Arthur Blank will be paying for every single Falcons employee to go to the big game. How much do you want to bet...

1) Kraft is doing the same or close?,
2) Mikey-- in the bizarro world where the Bengals actually GO to the Super Bowl-- would do the same?

Cue the old story about the cheerleaders taking the Greyhound bus to the Super Bowl.

I thought you guys were f*cking around...then I actually googled it:

F*ck. No way somebody that rich (as Paul Brown) would be that f*cking cheap.

But there it is. In all it's "glory".

Watching Arthur Blank and his wife dancing in the press box has been one of the highlights of this game. Why couldn't Mike Brown cash out his winnings with the billionaire co-founder of Home Depot two decades ago?????

The dancing stopped, unfortunately for the Blanks.

What I'll be looking for now are Blanks' interview comments in the offseason. I highly doubt that we'll hear a tone deaf "victory lap" type response like we did from Mike Brown back in July. The Bungs were coming off a heartbreaking loss, blowing yet another playoff game, but Mike Brown was all, rah rah we've made the playoffs five years in a row. We came closer than most to winning the Super Bowl. Puke!

You know Blank will say something to the effect of, "we've got to do better."
