Oysters Chat

Latest news: Colchester denied victory at Adams Park by a late equaliser. The U's had a penalty appeal turned down after Scott McGleish's third goal within a week had given them the lead shortly after half-time. Dean Morgan made another substitute appearance and young French midfielder Thomas Pinault started after having made two impressive appearances for the first team earlier this week. Attendance: 7,516.

At the end of the last two seasons, Colchester United have finished in 18th position with 52 points. Season 2000/01 showed a welcome improvement as we managed an additional 5 points, and ensured safety by finishing 17th. Optimism is growing in Colchester, and many fans believe we have the potential to make the play-offs next season. Only time will tell.....

First match

by

This in-between season banter is getting a little boring now, but I might as well start another topic. When was your first Colchester United match? Who was it against? What was the score? What are your recollections of the match? Do you have memorabilia (e.g. programmes)?

v Burnley 1990

by

I remember virtually nothing about the encounter itself other than that we lost 2-1 and my Dad was in tears at the end. Unfortunately I cleverly dropped the only piece of memorabilia- the programme- into a puddle, and some of the pages are now impossible to separate. But it does bear the signature of five nondescript Burnley players for some strange unexplained reason, so it could be worth something in the future..

Mine was against Yeovil

by

It was in 1990 I think, and apparently (I asked my dad) we lost the game 1-0. I have too many programmes to try and find it, and I have no memories of the game except recognising the name Yeovil for a while afterwards!

My most embarassing moment was in an away match against Crewe (again I'm not 100% sure it was Crewe). It was televised and it clearly shows me celebrating a goal by Crewe Alexandra. I must have been about 8 years old at the time, and I cheered because everyone else did! I still have the video, and it is very funny!

versus Watford in the FA Cup at Layer Road in the early eighties. possibly 1980/81?

I can't really remember too much about it or who would have been playing except I think it was a draw.
it was also on Match of The Day!

Watford game

by Chris

3/1/1981
We lost 0-1 in front of 7769!
We were relegated from the old third division with just 39 points that season.
Newport and Chester finished above us that season
Funny old game isn't it!

It wasn't my 1st match, but who was injured warming
up before an evening game? He went on to fall down
his stairs the next day(whilst in crutches),servering
an artery in his arm.It was only because of an ambulance near by that saved his life ! Clue early 70s.

No problem young man!.(and Sion)

by Chris

As you can tell i knew it was Dave Simmons(Not Ray Crawford Sion!)
Big Dave played Between 1970 and 1973 and joined the club at the same time as Brian Lewis that great player and drinker!
Dave played 68 games in total scoring 17 goals, one famous one in particular(no prizes for guessing which one)
He injured himself at S****horpe on 16/3/71 and did not play again that season, but went on to play a further 55 games during the next two seasons.
Dave will be 53 this year, god i feel old!

He did not play in the home game on the 22nd of March
due to the injury, we won 2-0,Crawford 2.

Most entertaining match

by

Which was the most entertaining match you have ever been present at?

Mine was at Cardiff last season. We lost 3-2 and I was listening to the game on Five Live while at the match. The commentators were drooling over the football, and began comparing it to classic Champions League encounters between Manchester United and Juventus. It was on a Friday night, hence the extended radio coverage, and it was a superb match. Jason Fowler (I think) secured victory for the Bluebirds with a 20-yard drive just to cap it all off! Brilliant match, pity about the result.

Excitement, Entertainment, Performance.

by

For excitement, it has to be the AWS semi-final second leg at Layer Road in 1997, which we won on golden goal.
No doubt!
For entertainment this season though, how about that 4-0 win over Bristol City? I was sat in the Clock End so I had a great view of all the second half goals. I think they were about 7th in the table at the time, and we completely took them to pieces!
In terms of team performance, you can't look much further than Reading at home. Especially given the importance of winning that match for them.

Bristol City

by

I was at that game, and I didn't think we deserved to win 4-0. We were outplayed for large parts of the game, and won it by such a large margin because we took our chances when they were presented to us. They started off the brighter team, and looked technically superior throughout. It was simply a case of 4 good finishes (albeit one was a penalty) and a bit of Lady Luck. It was one week after a dismal performance at home to Bury, in which we just about managed to scrape a 1-1 draw, so we desperately needed a morale-boosting victory. We certainly got that!

4-0

by

Exactly, and that's why it was such a memorable game. I was at the Bury game the previous Tuesday night, and wasn't that a pile of stinky bollocks? So to come out with a result as emphatic as 4-0 in the next game was fine by me, even though to be fair, Bristol did indeed look superior through the first 45 minutes.
Plus it was one of the first games of the year where the sun was actually shining!

unfortunately I only got to the away leg of that match....beautiful day at Barnet......but lost 1-0. I was however quietly confident that the U's would win at Layer Road. Couldn't make the 2nd leg.
I did get to the final though on the friday night.
The crowd was only half that of the Auto Windscreen final (which I also attended) the previous season but there was a great atmosphere nonetheless.

by

..was the 1-0 win at the Madejski Stadium earlier this season. Might seem an odd selection, but when you've just spent three hours in a car in the company of four Reading supporting mates who insist on continuously boasting about the superiority of their players, ground and facilities, their greater riches and who mercilessly rip the Michael out of Colchester, it becomes understandable..

The journey back was a fantastic experience.

12th August - Swindon 0 Colchester United 0
26th August - Swansea 0 Colchester United 2
11th November - Reading 0 Colchester United 1
17th February - Wrexham 1 Colchester United 0
20th February - Colchester United 1 Bury 1
24th February - Colchester United 4 Bristol City 0
3rd March - Stoke 3 Colchester United 1
14th April - Bristol Rovers 2 Colchester United 0

I have an annoying habit of going to all the games we lose! The win at Swansea was the first time I saw the U's win since the Division Three Play-Off Final in 1998. I guess I'm cursed...

I live in Ceredigion, Mid-Wales, which is over 6 hours away from Colchester. I go mostly to away games, and as many home games as possible. I went to all three Wembley appearances in the 90s.

Best Games Ever

Spain/Nigeria was quite good too... And I remember Romania knocking Argentina out of USA '94. That was pretty classic aswell! Why don't you set up a poll to vote for the best game of all time?
In my living memory, which admittedly is not a long time... the Man U/Arsenal FA Cup semi-final in their treble winning season must come near the top. Also Charlton/Sunderland division 1 play-off final that went to penalties. Then of course there's Man U/Oldham semi-final 1994, and the Man U/Bayern champions league final. Most exciting game I've seen at layer road has to be the Paul Abrahams golden goal which put us into the Auto Windscreens final. Liverpool/Alaves literally had everything... TWO red cards, TWO disallowed golden goals, amazing saves, a penalty, a disputed penalty, an amazing come-back, NINE goals (and quiality ones at that), extra time, and finally an own-goal to settle it!
What's everyone else's best game in living memory?

Best games!

by

Man United 3-3 Liverpool (Premiership January 1994)
Liverpool 5-4 Alaves (UEFA Cup final 2001)
England 4-1 Holland (EURO '96)
England 2-2 Argentina (France '98)
Arsenal 1-2 Man United (FA Cup semi-final 1999)
Man United 9-0 Ipswich Town (Premiership 1996?) you had to laugh.
Romania 3-2 Argentina (USA '94)
Charlton/Sunderland (Division 1 play-off final) Can't remember the score, but it went to penalties.
England 1-1 Germany (EURO '96) Ok we lost, but it was certainly one of the most tense, exciting games I can remember.
And now for Col U games I've been to:
Col U vs. POSH 1997 Autowindscreens sheild semi-final second leg. Paul Abrahams scores golden goal that takes us to Wembley.
The latter two Wembely appearances, to be honest, weren't the most entertaining football matches in the world, but I suppose the Torquay game must go down on this list.
Col United 7-1 Yeading (Fa cup 1st round replay 1994) Col U's equal highest FA Cup victory and I was there!
Col Utd 2-1 Reading, best performance I've seen this season!
I'm still racking my brains, but that's the most definitive list I can come up with right now!

Some people really do lead pointless existences, don't they?

Sion, if you're looking for voluntary moderators, I'll be 'appy to oblige

Ouch - there goes another rib

by

I think I'll leave these messages on the board, because they make more of a fool out of you that they do out of me. It's sad that people go to the effort of posting messages just to attempt to make other people unhappy. Get a life.

My messages are marked out from the others because they have 'Forum Owner' written underneath my name. Try
making that appear under your name. Doesn't work, does it?

You can't

by

The only option is to make the message board members only, which discourages people from posting. You'll just have to delete any unwanted messages.

FAO Championship Manager fans

by

If anyone has any material that might be useful in the creation of a Championship Manager website, please mail it to me at champ-man@appleonline.net because I will be designing a website as part of my IT project. I've been promising it for ages, but I've been tied up with other schoolwork, plus I lost everything I had to do with Championship Manager when my computer crashed. Thanks.

Heya babe

by

I can't wait for you to come down to Wales.

Will it be for 2 weeks then? I hope so cos my mum said 2 weeks is fine. We'll have to arrange when it is pretty soon. I've been thinking about it all afternoon, in between doing about 5 Physics past papers.

My French Oral is on Friday, and I've got mock orals on Monday and Wednesday. Aaaaarrrrggghhhhh STRESS! Too much work to do. Two Economics essays on top of that, plus 3 different sets of Maths homework. Oh well, back to my work...
