I'm currently play-testing this idea. As it stands, there are four main ways to learn a skill in this variant.
1) to have a master teach you. People like Akara, Drognan, Cain, and other mages will teach you various skills as you go through the game.
2) Watch the skill being done. Watching your enemies doing certain skills, then copying them. For example, when facing Blood Raven and her fire arrows, the Amamzon will be able to use her fire arrow skill after completing the quest.
3) Experience the skill first hand. When people cast the skill on you, you can learn from that. For example, when you first approach the five stones in stony field, you are attacked by Rakanishu, who discharges charged bolt. By getting hit by these charged bolts, the Sorceress can learn to cast charged bolt when she defeats him.
4) Learn the skill from items. Here is the tricky part. The item must be able to cast the skill, not grant you the ability. Ring of firebolt and items that give % to cast nova are examples. There will be certain ways you can learn from these items. As for items like wands, staves, and scepters which can grant certain skills, but not able to cast them, there are going to be ways to learn from those items, but I haven't gotten that far ahead yet.
This is the preview on what this variant will involve. I'm currently running a necro through. So far everything is going smoothly. However, I'm only in act 1. When the variant is comeplete, I'll post it up here along with the results of the play-test.
Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks,
Quvmoh
