In FO1 with the patch, when you finished 1 of the 2 main (water chip not included) quests in the game, I think it might be unlimited time. Playing the game unpatched, you will have the deadline, you can still finish the game, but it does get annoying.
In FO2, this is just from my own anecdotal evidence, but there is a time limit. I once played the game without completing the main quest, just hoofing it all the way and shooting critters. I did that for approximately 18-20 years of gametime.
Then the screen faded to black and announced that the game was over. Without me dying, apparently the villagers are patient, but not that patient.
Now, I remember reading somewhere that the programmers hardcoded a time limit, something along the lines of 18-20 years of gametime, and it does take awhile to reach that limit. But I haven't tried out if that time limit is still in effect after you finished the main quest.
To conclude my nonsensical rambling, yes there is a time limit, but don't worry too much about it, reaching even 10-15 years of gametime can take awhile.
