gday all
Some years back (about 1993-5) I used to bushwalk west of Mulgoa while recovering from a serious car prang. taking only a walking stick or staff after the first few months. I would walk at all times of day and sometimes at night or more often the evening. I had actually helped bust a couple of pot plantations in my travels so I wasnt allways on the regular tracks.
Anyway, one clear night I went for a walk at about 8:30 into the layby on fairlight road near the lookout 5KM round trip. I had gotten about 50m off the track when I heard some movement in front. being a well trained Army scout I froze and listened. The footsteps were measured and unhurried and coming toward me... Now Im no pussy ! and I know all about the mulgoa tiger , blue mountain cats etc but the word Yowie was one I never thought would go through my mind, lame, a Km from home holding a stick and not an M16 or my trusty .303.

cont,
As I stood there the footsteps got closer and some wattle branches waved. As far as I could tell it wasnt boots (not crunching ) I stood on one side of a large ghost gum and the footsteps went on the other about 3-5m away then , they ...stopped. Bloody hell! I thought .I reckoned I must have stood there for an hour but it was probably only a few seconds. then the footsteps proceeded on into the bush that is just above the nepean river. Thats my weird encounter. It wasnt until a few days later that I went there again an realized that the branches I had seen move against the sky were at least 2.5 metres above the ground.
Moral: always go ready for bear 7.62+, carry a torch and spare underpants...

G-Day Chris

How would you feel if there were 3 of these creatures and they were " FOLLOWING " you ?

How would you feel if you were sitting in a picnic area at night, and there were at least 2 of these creatures ? One on each side of you and they were smashing branchers.

This is only a tast of what some people heve experienced.

It's a breath taking feeling ( BIG BIG SMILE )

Hi Chris

I just rang Rex and passed this in an email to him.

You say they stopped fairly close to you the footsteps.

Did you look afterwards for any evidence of where it had walked??

Or did you hear it breathing at all??

Was there quiet all around you or was the bush alive with sounds of the forest?

Im researching apparent sightings of large Leopard type cats around Mulgoa right now...Maybe I will keep my eyes out also.

Thanks for the report.

no worries .
It was actually very quiet as I heard the steps coming from a fair way off and had time to stop. I went back a few days later but ended up stalking some guys who were planting pot ! The ground around there is rock hard anyway and I was not in any state to go crashing through the scrub.

Oh yes, no breathing noises...but then again Im surprised whatver it was couldnt hear my heart beat!
Again , I really dont know what it was.
BTW there are now deer in the area of mulgoa lookout, yet more escapees from Mr Margolins' Notre Dame I assume , there were stories some time ago of missing alligators etc, who knows if some of his pet cats havent gotten out in the past?? BTW A good friend that lived over the road directly on the bush occasionally rang me asking for me to go over and check around her house because she was spooked by something. And she owned 2 very noisy colie dogs. There is just too much bush that is never travelled to say for sure that something doesnt live in them thar hills.

Maybe we can meet up and go check out that ladies house and the surrounding areas you mentioned.

So many people have had so me many exotic animals etc..over the past 200 years as pets, who knows, but alott of them are from here, or have evolved here.

Although I haven't heard of any Yowie pets as such, although one story that Rex tells...they did capture one and eventually let it go after another female one followed it to the farm where they kept it.

that address or area is easy to find. Just go down to Mulgoa on the Mulgoa Rd and turn up Fairlight Rd, follow it till you hit the dirt road to the lookout. you will come past a gate soon after you go onto the dirt, and another about 500m? further up. Stop at either one and walk into the bush and presto!. There are dams and heavy bush there but you are very close to the river also. If you go on to the end there is a great lookout and trails that go along the escarpment into the bush. I really havent walked there recently but anything could be in there. Good luck.

We recieved a report of an agressive Yowie at Mulgoa a couple of months back. It was a very similar story to this one. Both witnesses seemed quite credible and the story was very realistic. Probably worth a look aout that way.
