My grandfather was born in Sydney in 1881 but spent part of his chldhood in the bush. He died when I was 13 however I can still remember bits and pieces of the many stories he told me. One such story was about a "hairy man" who lived on top of a mountain. I am not sure where this took place and am hoping someone has also heard the story and can fill me in about the location. The story goes that a mysterious "hairy man" terrorised a small community in NSW in the 1800's. There were numerous sightings and women were afraid to go outside at night. The beast also killed stock so a trap was set up whereby carcasses were hung up and group of local men then hid and waited for the beast to show up. Sure enough, that night, the Hairy Man approached the carcasses. The Hairy Man was wounded by a gunshot and fled into the bush. The group followed a trail of blood up to the top of a mountain but never found the Hairy Man.
Some posssible clues about the location include the fact that my grandfather spent time in the Mudgee/Gulgong area as a boy. His father was also in the Bega distict in the 1870's and I note that a this website has a story about a Bega yowie from around this era. Also, I have a vague recollection of the town of Bowral being mentioned in connection with the story, however, this may not be reliable. Can anyone help?

Hi

Im off to Rex's for New years Eve and will email you and respond here about what you want in the New year.

I know that around The National Park near Waterfall there was a family who were terrorised by a hairy man stalking there home etc.. over a long period in the 1800's..

If I remember rightly the owner was a Park Official who looked after the park and it was his residence which was targeted.

Avagoodnewyear

Thanks fore the story.

I will get back to you shortly.
