Tiger Woods may have been spotted on many golf courses around the world, but it was a cat of a different kind that made an unexpected appearance at the Mayfield Golf Club yesterday.
Sightings of Mid Canterburys mysterious black panther have been popping up all over the district since the creature hit the headlines nearly two weeks ago.
Golfers at the Mayfield Golf Club got a scary surprise when they looked down the fairway of the fourth hole yesterday what looked like a black panther lurking in the trees.
Instead of dropping their trundlers and running in the other direction at 100 miles an hour, the golfers decided to be brave and take a closer look. Fortunately for them, unlike the sighting by local truck driver Chad Stewart just over a week ago, the panther seen wandering among the trees on the golf course turned out to be a harmless prank.
While the panther looked realistic from a distance, on closer inspection, the brave golfers found it was only a wooden cutout.
Motorists are also being warned about the danger the black panther may create after a sign was placed on a powerpole on State Highway 77.
The homemade sign features a picture of what at first glance looks like a cow but it is a panther, and it warns motorists that panthers may be lurking for the next 20kms.
