Casey Clausen's fault. The bottom line is, as I have learned from this board, that ultimately it is the QB's responsibility to win/lose a game/championship. There are no other deciding factors, all the blame/credit lies squarely on his shoulders. CC is a bum, get him out now and get KW prepared to salvage a bowl game and be ready for next year. Maybe he can win a championship. At least we all know he's the right color to do it.

First I've Heard of the Race Card

December 13 2001, 8:42 AM

Being played in the quarterback stud game.
CC played more than well enough to do his part in winning those loses against GA. and LSU.
Not sure where your tongue in cheek take derives from.

Good point..

Except for the race issue. Race has nothing to do with ANY players performance on the field. Sure Tee Martin was a great UT quarterback that happened to be black, but Nebraska's last three QBs all had success and they were two white men(frost and crouch) and a black man(Frazier). The fans of NU didn't see any color but red and of course the sears trophy. Some say that Tommie Frazier was the best QB to come through NU, but in my mind I think Eric Crouch was the best(and I happened to be a black man,how about that?). This is not based on their race, but instead what they did on the field. Tee martin was the best at UT, because he motivated his team for success. He didn't care about personal stats! He wanted to get his team mates to a NC and win it. CC doesn't have those traits. Kelly washington shows that he enjoys winning, but he can't do much if the coaches won't throw to him. He has great QB qualities so why not put him back there? He's much faster, stronger, and brighter than CC. You know something is wrong when CC's own brother talks about him. Put Kelly Washington at QB and he will help bring at least one more NC back to knoxville

Don,

Wooley Carter is just poking fun at numerous posters on this board who spent the last offseason & the first part of this season, booing Casey Clausen, literally & figuratively. There is a UTJethro element that thinks that the next QB is always the better one.

You are misguided on the keys to a National Championship--the quarterback needs to be adequate only. The real key, more often than not, is to have a stable of big, strong, & fast running backs with a good offensive line.

TN had 3 in 1998.
FL had Fred Taylor in 1996.
Look at Nebraska's championship years.

Quarterbacks need only be adequate. They can lose key games for you--like Chris Sims did recently or Crouch did against Colorado. They may win the Heisman & get the glory, but the players they hand the ball to are the key.

great point!!!!

Without a OL and some great runningbacks, you can cross out a NC. But I still say a mobile QB helps you out far more than a pocket passer. UT has had some great runningbacks and I was really impressed with stephens. I might have poked fun about the doak walker award, but myself as well as fans that understand football know that stephens deserved that award. I could only imagine what he or jamal lewis would have done at NU, but they took care of business at UT.

Thanks for baiting me Carter. The fact is, Clausen has already won more big games than Manning had. CC beat Florida at Florida as a Sophomore. Also as a Fr, he took UT to Columbia and beat SC in his second career start.

I'll also repeat that I'm not holding CC responsible for Saturday's debacle. He wasn't calling the defenses against a freshman qb. He also didn't call those 3 idiotic shotgun pass plays near the goaline. Nor did he open the 2nd half by calling two runs and a flat pass to Stephens.

If you don't think Manning throws some of the most ill-advised passes, look up his stats in the NFL. He already has 20 Ints.

can't blame the qb

December 14 2001, 7:24 AM

watch the game again closely and you will see alot of factors to this game.
the coaches didn't do what they should have to help the players.
Stephens fumbled the ball and what did they do? took him out of the game. In the Fla game, when Whitten fumbled twice, Fulmer patted him on the back and said he would do better the next time. everyone is going to screw up, but give them the chance to make up for their errors.
Tenn did not play like the team that beat Fla.
They have the great players to do the job, but play them right and treat them right.
Go Vols beat Michigan.
