SOS Is Still In Your Heads

My Gosh, Miami pastes NU in the BCS title game and the news is overshadowed nationally by details of of Steve Spurrier's resignation as football coach at the University of Florida. This board is no different. TBA, surely a forgerer posted this tripe under your name:

"I am sooooo glad we spanked that ass in Ben Hill Griffin before he got away. And....in his final regular season game".

If those were indeed your words, they are further evidence of how far SOS was in your collective UT heads.

I like the fact that Tenn beat SPURRIER in his last game vs TENN. Hell I take pride in the fact that UT beat BAMA and the BEAR in his last game vs TENN. I know somewhere in hell the Bear is moaning and groaning in eternal suffering KNOWING TENN kicked that ass the last game he coached against TENN.

That is not a matter of being in our HEAD. This is more of a matter that TENN fans overall have long memories, hold grudges, and generally have a mean streak

My friend, IG,

I must confess that I am delighted that we beat FL in Spurrier's last game at FL Field--great AFLAC trivial question as we grow older. It was a big victory for us and it is in our record books.

I am sorry Spurrier is gone for sporting reasons. I will miss observing how the media wrapped itself in the "cult of Spurrier personality". The "cult of personality" was mentioned by a national writer in an article in the Knoxville News Sentinel this morning.

Due to the "cult of Spurrier personality", we, as well as the FL nation, had elevated Spurrier far above what he was as coach at FL. Over the years, the UTJethros have focused like a laser on Spurrier & turned natural respect for the coach, into an unreasonable fear of him. Of course, he used the media to belittle us & we let him. We, as an ORANGE nation, are in relief this morning while some of our UTJethros will miss something that they wanted, but could never have. IMO, Spurrier, as a foil for us, helped elevate our program above what it was.

I say the "cult of Spurrier's personality" is far deeper & broader in the FL nation, than it is here. It will be interesting to see, if a Spurrier clone can be found. There will be comparison & maybe even some genetic testing by Foley.

Some of the VOL nation found out this year that, if you beat FL & lose to anyone else, you have a problem if you want to win a National Championship. Hopefully, now that Spurrier has retired, some of my fellow VOL fans will be beamed back down to earth about the overhyped FL game & the overhyped "cult of Spurrier personality".

I'll concede your final line. OSVF, the cult of personality is exactly my point about SOS. Of course, there would not have been one had he not been so successful. Believe it or not, I am sort of relieved that SOS has made the move. The endless speculation as to his departure is over and we Gator fans can move forward. Bob Stoops' thundering silence in the midst of the uproars in Gainesville and Norman leads me to believe he will be named UF's new HBC on Monday.

Besides the "is Spurrier going to the NFL" question Fla

January 5 2002, 4:53 PM

fans have put up with every year, what to you think of trading the ol' ball coach for Bob Stoops? Honestly, I think it's a helluva deal for your Gators.

I will profess OU is my second favorite team so I may come off as a OU & Stoops SHEEP, but I think this guy is one incredible football coach.

OU would have been playing for another nat'l title this yr if QB Jason White had stayed healthy. Hybl just wasn't good enough to produce any points.

My wife & I talked about it earlier today and if Stoops decides to return to Fla, then he may be opening the door for his brother Mike to take over at OU. Just a thought.

If hired, I guarantee you Stoops will recruit harder than Spurrier ever did, and I just think he's an OVERALL better football coach than SS.

Put it this way: If Florida hires Stoops, the SEC won't have it any easier than they did with Shiny Pants.

Brocky, I'm Hoping It's Stoops Bigtime....

January 5 2002, 5:18 PM

...for the reasons you cite but I won't go as far as saying he's a better coach overall than SOS. SOS was Stoops' mentor. They are close friends with vacation homes near each other in Crescent Beach. I really think they have may have colluded on this although SOS is such a straight shooter I'm beginning to doubt myself on that one.

In any event, Stoops is a perfect fit at UF. He is revered already by Gator fans, knows his potential AD well, is very familiar with the state of Florida recruiting-wise, and loves the Gainesville area. Moreover, he ain't from Oklahoma. I just think his silence indicates something is in the works. At the very least, he is giving the job serious consideration.

IG, I have no doubt Stoops will consider the UF job

January 5 2002, 6:22 PM

long & hard but I keep asking myself if he wants to replace a living legend in Gainesville or continue his own legacy in Norman.

Spurrier was the "face" of Florida football, and Stoops is doing the same at OU.

More times than not, coaches that follow great one's don't fare so well. However, I'd be shocked of Stoops wouldn't be an exception rather than the rule.

IG, there is no doubt that SOS owns space in the head of UT fans

The SHEEP will remain enamored by him forever. Every time he farts some wooley radio station, the KNS or a local news anchor would be right there to lap up the aroma & report to the SHEEP, the skinny.

IMO the Vol network, the KNS & of course, the SHEEP sensationalized the man to superhuman status. Of course, SOS using FGP as his personal urinal on the field didn't help matters in Sheepville.
