Regarding Quarterbacks for 2002.
HHM, Did I read where you said Richt would open the position up to Shockley in the spring? How accurate a passer is DJ? Would that circumvent your offense next year? That would make no sense to me with receivers like Gibson and Edwards. Greene is an accurate passer, a winner, who wasn't as ballyhooed as DJ. Could this be mirroring the Mack Brown debacle of playing the HS AA Simms over the one deserving to be on the field, Applewhite?
Warrior, I guess it's all but done that Croyle will be Bama's QB? Watts throws with zero accuracy & the option WILL NOT WORK in the SEC.
IMO Richt needs to send the message to the team that D. Greene is his QB going into spring practice. Fran needs to make clear that that the QB position will be up for grabs this spring.

Interesting point. Fran has to make some decisions on what type offense he wants to base out of, not only next year, but for the next 4 years. If he's going with Watts, then the option has to be the point of emphasis. Fran says he wants to be multiple. That would be more indicative of a passing oriented attack that would favor Croyle. Here's my take:
I'll be surprised if Watts doesn't open 2002 as the starting QB. He keeps mistakes to a minimum, which seems to fit Fran's style. He's not the most accurate passer, but he does bring certain intangibles to the table that I appreciate. He's tough, he loves Alabama, and he'll be a 5th year senior. Now I'm not one for feel good quarterbacks, even though the previous statement appears otherwise. I just think we'll be a better team with Watts at QB than a player that has never taken an SEC snap.
I haven't seen enough of Croyle to make a good evaluation. I'll know more after seeing some practices in the Spring. I do know he has a cannon for an arm. If things get off to a rough start next year (very possible since Watts could get embarrassed by the OU defense the first week in September), then the Baaahhhinngg will be long and loud for Croyle. Problem is, in an option styled attack Croyle is a wasted talent.
I reserve the right to change my opinion after the Spring. But as of now I see Watts getting the nod.
