Is this an SEC board, or even a Southern Sports board? If so then you need to 86 the Vol orange background. It screams of subjectivity.

This is a good board. There are some classy intelligent people posting here. This has become my source for discourse with other SEC sports fans since Conference Call went down.

If this is intended to be a predominantly UT board then disregard my comments.

I've only been posting here a couple of months, but methinks it's a UT board where.....

January 6 2002, 5:03 PM

...all other fans are welcome. I'm a bit thin-skinned, so it took a while to realize that although folks here are rather direct and quick to challenge posts, most members get along quite well. The orange background is fine with me.

Not speaking for TBA, but...

January 6 2002, 5:12 PM

this is not a "SEC" board per se. 90% of the participants are UT fans, it's run by UT fans, and most discussions revolve around UT. Anyone and any topic are more than welcome, but I don't think TBA and PV are trying to pretend to be a Switzerland in the deal.

SPS Background Color

January 6 2002, 7:11 PM

As the creator of this board, I claim responsibility for the VOL ORANGE background color. After all, at the moment this board had ZERO members but me, and it was intended to replace the AM 1240 board that Tony nixed without warning, which was a mostly UT board.

This remains a mostly UT board, but the possibilities are greater than that. We could and should go national! DO YA HEAR ME?

This forum had the intellect all along...it just had to develop tolerance for other points of view. It is now a showcase board, IMO.

Bottom line, I made the background orange...TBA can change it if you lobby him well enough. (I also made the SPS heading and made the barbed wire the SPS logo..had to "negotiate" with a Marine for the barbed wire...want to change those?)

Crunch Question for all members: Should SPS remain a predominately UT board or should it seek to expand its boundaries? After all, we already have other fans here, including me. Open question, and this ain't Lee's Wholesale Flooring!

Craig

CD!!! Good to read Ya!

January 6 2002, 8:10 PM

Good stuff Craig, but remember who pushed ya for the barbed wire and to keep it!!!
As we start to use the recently procured domain name Craig, PV and I are experimenting with the transition link when you first put in www.sportsparlorsouth.com.
As we expand and grow expenses are piling up so we are seeking the right way to advertise without it being an eyesore or cumbersome to navigate.
I love the orange background but do not feel it is imperative to the board. We want to get a national take going but it is a valid point that is raised and we can debate it. I believe the gist of what SPS stands for is obvious even if I changed the back ground. But GatorTD brings a valid point to the table on fans perception outside the UT world.
But that one will take some thought!!!
CD, Don't be such a stranger, stay in the mix!

Thanks, Al...

January 6 2002, 9:11 PM

...but you are in East Tennessee. In the beginning, I tried to have members buy stuff they would have bought anyway from SPS affiliates...not one sale...would rather give their money to Wal-Mart. I wanted to build a prize pool for members re sports events, but no dice...ET guys expect a back-stabbing from their neighbor, and so give nothing (expecting to be screwed).

ET guys are that way because their women teach them to be wary...911..watch out for the POlice! LOL!

Knoxville is a pit. No trust nor glad beginnings. Thank God it's different in Michigan!

TBA and PV, you MUST expand your base to make 5 cents for any promotion. ET guys are too slick to give you 1 cent without your deed as collateral.

Remember when I first met you and Shark for a round of Disk GolF? I pulled up and asked whether either of you had seen a big, ugly guy named "Al"? LOL! Three good and honest guys, how many from ET?

Good luck w/ this board. I am proud of my Christmas baby. And one year later, I am still happy with the Lord's blessings on me. Every-which-way you can, HE has blessed me and my move North.

Always an interested bystander...

Craig

I vote for leaving it orange

January 6 2002, 9:12 PM

Or at least a link to a UT discussion board should SPS expand to its potential. I think we are quite a bit away from that. You don't need to change the color IMO. If you do make sure you get the Tall Guy's approval. Maybe you could change the backdrop to black.

ok i know that i'm classified as a sheep around this forum , and it's considered "tres chic" to be highly critical of tennesse in these parts of the internet , but the stick that stirs the pot in here is the UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE !!! if the powers that be , in their wolfish reasoning decide to change this format to not have the UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE as the primary focus i wont let the door hit my ass on the way out ! i'm not saying close the borders of TENNESSEE and dig a moat around the place , i very much enjoy the occasional bickering between other sec school fans , and yes even non-sec fans . i'm just saying that even the highly critical ( wolves ) must admit that it is the "BIG ORANGE " that makes this place interesting , and it would be an awful shame if the powers that be changed this format just because a couple of slimy gator fans came in here and whined about the orange background !i can just imagine how horse whipped i would get if i went into a florida room as a tennessee fan and suggested these changes that these idiots have ! you gator fans must really be desparate now that your lord and master has gone !! we whipped your A$$ES and then your coach left you !! ooo i'm so sorry for you !! ya i feel your pain ! just do me a favor ! leave !!!!!!!!!!

Are You Drinking, Pepvol?

January 6 2002, 9:49 PM

In his original post, GatorTD said "If this is intended to be a predominantly UT board then disregard my comments". I responded by acknowledging this was a UT board, complimenting the posters here, and expressing satisfaction with the orange background. We are the only Gators to comment on the issue here, I believe. Actually reading threads before responding in them is a good habit to consider.

Speaking as unapologetic Tar Heel...

January 6 2002, 9:51 PM

I can truthfully say that I'm okay with this orange background. It actually seems to be one of the most historically accurate colors around (pertaining to UT).

There are a lot of more obnoxious shades of orange that you see at UT sporting events. Some of them are almost the same shade as Clemson's orange (see jumbotron).

Bottom line with me, and it's purely personal preferance on my part --- I hate most shades of orange. But the one used on this board is very tolerable.

Surely not a threat, but...

January 6 2002, 11:50 PM

if SPS ever tries to become a "national" board or anything close to it, I will cease and desist from participating in the forum. If I wanted a national board, I'd go search ESPN or the like. Hell, as much as I like to read a little of GATORSPORTS.COM, it wears me out when you have 573,352 threads per day on God-knows-what topic.

This site was built, IMO, on the discussion of UT sports and those schools we have interaction with. And I think it's great we get the Smittys and Megawhatevers on here to provide differing opinion. But I'll just tell you now, the day this board tries to become some nationwide sounding board, I'm oughta here! Which, to some, I'm sure would be a welcome thing. I would sure hate to make my first visit to Volquest or Sheepscape, whatever it's called!

Does A Successful "National" Sports Message Board Exist?

January 7 2002, 12:00 AM

I've never heard of one. In my view, keep it UT- oriented, otherwise the base will disappear. Even conference forums have real trouble maintaining interest. In reality, whether we are sheep or wolves, we all follow particular programs and don't care to read trite details about peripheral or irrelevent teams.

No question you type from the heart. But the heart of this board is with its members and their knowledge and wit that makes it work. The affiliation with the University brought us together. And I agree a part of Sports Parlor South will have to remain dedicated to that small knit group that has always been within. And there are ways to do that even amidst growth.
CD, PV and I could have a ton of bells and whistles and be posting back and forth to each saying, "what the hell here? What gives? What is the matter with all that surrounds us?"

The University of Tennessee is what drives my passion for the board. As well as the opportunity to take it to next level after next level. There is a whole world of interesting takes and classic showdowns but there is also a special heart that resides in East Tennessee. CD I experience much of the negativity of which you speak. But where does this diatribe generate from and how do you explain the outpouring of the Volunteer spirit and heart that's also rooted in these here parts? And rears its head in other areas of compassion and help thy neighbor areas?
Ya see some people never get it and never will. And for those I feel sorry that their lives have gone that lonely road of self absorption and neighborly mistrust.
But there is a spirit here that I never found anywhere else. One that I can not explain, no way no how. But it comes out of the mountains, it comes from our heritage and the beauty of this land is hard to negate. It is out there to be found and rekindled in the hearts, yes, of many I have met.
But though it takes time to find it sometimes in others and they are much resolved to not share their inner selves unless you are family or lifelong friends, it is there. So in many ways yes, it appears cold and indifferent to us settlers from another state, but no that is not the bottom line of the Tennessee spirit.

And ya see, I have a secret that gives me an in, one that allows me to see what others do not. One that gives me patience in this area where I am ruthless for fast paced progress in others. For though I was not born in these here hills, I found out just three years ago, that I was conceived on the Tennessee side of Bristol in 1953. It meant everything to me when I found that out. I'm sure it will be perceived as comical to some but that's OK. When your roots find home it is a feeling that all is well in the greater scheme of things and life takes on a new frontier of adventure and understanding.

Now what the hell were we talkin about????

The worst thing you guys can do...

January 7 2002, 1:15 AM

is to move this board away from being a UT oriented forum. There are usually many non-UT threads related to a variety of sports and that's a good thing, but the main theme should be UT. I say this being a nonUT fan (hell I'm a non SEC fan though I grew up in the area and still love to follow the league). IMO the best thing about this board is that you find a great amount of the "wolf" mentality and better yet it isn't censored. I've been told to tone it down on other boards when I have the audacity to "question the establishment." You'll never get that here at SPS and that's next level.

January 7 2002, 7:10 AM

man big al you about got me all teary eyed !! hehe j/k. i realize that this is yours and pv's board to do with as you wish , i was just making my argument on maintaining UT as the primary focus . i wish you and pv all the success in the world and who knows where this may take you guys ! hell i admire anybody who has the desire and motivation it takes to try to create something that could end up being their legacy ! i can totally relate to your feelings of this area and i'm glad to hear of you finding your "roots". i was flying home from 29 palms california in 1981 after leaving my duty station in the marines , and i was coming home for the first time in over a year , and as i flew the last leg from atlanta the plane was making it's descent over the smoky mountains , and as i was taking in the breathtaking scenery i was listening to the headphones when i heard for the first time the song by ronnie milsaps "SMOKY MOUNTAIN RAIN " ! i was too young up until then to truly appreciate how beautiful and unique this area was , but it hit me full in the face at that time how lucky i was to live in the great state of TENNESSEE ,and even more so in the foothills of the great SMOKY MOUNTAINS !! you're right about the uniqness of the passion the people from this area exude , and maybe these great SMOKY MOUNTAINS play a part in that !

o ya by the way investigayturd , you and your fellow gayturd's false feeling of superiority always amuse me !!

CD & All

January 7 2002, 10:02 AM

Some considerations. The BIG boards in this area RIVALS-Brent Hubbs's Volquest server-parent company, coalition or what ever it was went bankrupt. A new company leaner and meaner had to be created. With pop ups, intrusive advertisement, and more pay as you go premium features. Gridscape, Chuck's baby independent as they come had to bite the bullet and join a group. Servers are very expensive, down as much as they are up, prone to virus attacks by rival companys, etc.

Here we sit at Network54, SPS is independent, free, free of intrusive advertisers. BUT VULNERABLE! What do we do if Network 54 went belly up? What if Tony thrtows a shit fit and removes our link to his show, Or uses us as a media circus like JC was thrown around? Or what if Tony says to hell with radio I want to make some serious money and does something else?

Advertisement! An exclusive affiliation with a banner company would bring in close to $19 dollars a month LOL. The cost to go premium at Network54 is a little more than $20 a month.LOL I can produce flashing java script banners and sell them. But Internet ad costs are at a rock bottom low. IMHO 5-10$$ a month would be top $$ we could seriously expect. TBA was not impressed with the reality of our earning potential, but he has to face that reality. He suggests a patron system that could work. BUT a patron list in reality would be all of us that participate and any of our friends we could shake down. Lets face it who in the hell will click on a advertisement for fun. To advertise you have to push the issue and force folks to look at the name being advertised.

I wanted a domain name. They are cheap, but hosting runs at best $100 a year. Why bother you ask? Because we are vulnerable, we need an address that is easy to remember in case of the above mentioned troubles. The website gets very little use. The big hitter was the Neyland Page, and then the gallery.

I have developed a "portal" page. A piece of java script that takes you to a pre page for a quick look, then launches you to the destination. The big draw at SportsParlorSouth is not the radio show, the web page or anything else, it is the Bulletin Board. Finding a way to get advertising dollars from the board is tough. A portal page is probably the answer. TBA will probably need to bite the bullet, put ego aside, sell cheap advertisement, and pay the bills. Right now the portal page is a mission statment page with props to our first contributor other than CD, TBA, or myself!

The radio show, adding premium access at Network54, runs over 500$$ a year. Server and domain another $100. As you notice all three of those items are "luxury" and not a have to have proposition. Some are fun, others prevenative and ease of use issues.

One last thing from my lengthy post. Neither TBA,CD, nor myself have your database from Network54. They do! If we move or if they shut down we cannot contact you directly only by a post. You would have to find us!! Thus www.sportsparlorsouth.com

pepvol:

Slimy Gator fans?

You don't even know me, my friend. That you would call me slimy on the merits of my being a Gator fan alone speaks volumes about the kind of fan you are. It would be easy for me to let jerks like you color my impression of fans from other schools, but I choose the higher road -- tolerance, curiosity and open-mindedness. That's why I'm here. If I wanted to stay in the orange and blue safety zone I'd post only on Gator boards where the perenial topic of the day is "How much we love the Gators".

If you're interested in discourse with fans from other schools then try treating them with respect. If you just want to stay under that Tennessee rock you crawled out from under then suit yourself.

Regarding my original post:

I posted that on the basis of what I read in another thread about this board possibly going to another level. The title of this board is Sports Parlor South. To me that implies a focus beyond Tennessee. But that's just semantics, I guess.

Regardless, its a good board.

IF YOU WANT TO COME IN TO A BOARD THAT SAYS UT AT THE TOP WITH YOUR GATOR NAME THEN DON'T BE SUCH A SENSITIVE LITTLE CRYBABY !!!! ya i'm a tennessee fan ! and proud of it ya moron ! i guess you think in this politically correct world we live in you can just come in here and say that the tennessee orange color offends you and BOOM !! just like that you get your way ! well guess what you didn't and you won't . you come in here as a respectful guest and i'll treat you like one , but you come in here with gayturd as your name and suggesting we get rid of the BIG ORANGE COLOR you are not showing anybody in here respect either , so you ought to be given down the road . if you did'nt have that florida smugness and false feeling of superiority you would understand me , but i'm sure you're response will be something like " typical tennessee fan" . but you know what , i could care less what you think !!!!
