Tony brought much of his demise on himself by letting some of the daily negative moron callers (many of them post here) go too far. They called and said the same negative junk every day. I and most everyone else I know would start at 3pm listening to Basilio but as soon as these guys would start their daily diatribe the dial would be turned to 990.
Don't get me wrong I don't want to hear nothing but UT feel good stories but these callers took their negative views to "The Next Level" (pardon the pun) and Basilio gave them enough rope to hang himself and The Team.
I sincerely hope you guys re-think how you act when you call 990 and Swampy's show. If we lose those guys we'll be in bad shape! Of course, I don't think they'll give you guys as much rope as Basilio did.
If you blame "negative" callers for his dismissal then you are a dumbass. People blasted JC a few weeks ago for posting the ratings for the sport call in shows. Matter of fact, he was banned from Tony's show for doing this. I hate that Tony's show is off the air but ratings don't lie. This was about losing a lot of money. Don't blame callers for this. If that were the case his show would have been off the air 3 years ago!
Hey shit for brains, the reason Basilio's ratings were so bad were because of idiot callers like you, JC, Tenn. Stud, etc. who were allowed on the air almost daily. The average Knoxville sportstalk listener would rather put up with boring "I look like Glenn Campbell" Hyams and "Giggles" Wilkerson than listen to redneck idiots like you and JC act like 3rd graders everyday.
No audience (because they are turned off by the JC's of the world) = No ratings. It's that simple.

I haven't called TB's show in over TWO Months. He-Hate-Me calls about once every TWO Months, and The Stud calls every Blue Moon. I can make the Argument that he is no longer on the air because we quit calling.

you can't explain that to a moron voldude ! i started listening to tony when he was on 1040 and at first i loved the change of pace from mike keith. tony is a natural talent for radio no doubt, he was funny , quick witted and very imaginative . his mistake though was thinking that there was a huge market in this area of what i call the typical "fair weather yankee fan ". yes theres a very loud minority of so called "wolves" , but good god after listening to phil say the same damn thing for about a year straight (tony , are we ever gonna beat florida) ,it got to be very boring hearing these same 20 or 30 idiots call every day and say the same old shit day after day after day . it was only tony's personality and his humor and skill that would bring me back during a break on 990. i think it's a testament of tony's skills that he became as big as he did , because believe me , tony wasn't getting any help to his ratings from bozos like top dawg , phil , jc , or the enforcer. these guys thought they were stars because they could get on the radio every day , but all they did was drag tony down .all you have to do is look at Neyland stadium and see that most people in this area LOVE TENNESSEE and the constant daily ripping of TENNESSEE would not set good with the majority. after mike keith left Tony had a golden opportunity to take over the sports radio market in this area . hell even a homer like me can stand only so much of john and jimmy. Tony wouldn't have had to lose his edge either , he could have still been risque' , he could still be huge if he'd come back with a little more positive take on his university. all you wolves can just kiss my A$$ if you don't agree with this by the way !!!!

I reckon 990 and Dewey's show will be off the air soon. JC,Small Mike,Phil,Bryan,and other "negative" callers flood their airwaves everyday. Matter of fact, they have called 990 longer than Tony has been on the air. Your argument does not add up so shut the hell UP!
This is really ridiculous. Tony's show is off the air because the ratings weren't comparable to the competition. That's how the radio business works. If nobody listens to your show, then advertisers don't want to spend their money so you can advertise their product/service when nobody is listening. It's all about the almighty dollar!

PV, for the record, I have NOT called Tony's show during the week for over a year. I called him and BT after the UGA win this past season. So you need to shut the hell up.
True UT fans hate hearing Small Mike call the lady vols lesbians. They hate hearing idiots like Gus call Fulmer names. Too many idiots were calling Tony's show.
and it was to try and win tickets but I loved that show when I had the chance to hear it. Sheep like pepvol won't miss it because they have the Snooze to turn to and hear their feel good for the day. IMO the best part of the show was that it wasn't all feel good, you actually could count on getting some actual objectivity out of the show/callers instead of "the Vols are great" out of every Tom, Dick, and Harry. He had an entertaining format and it's a shame he's been taken off the air.
Perhaps some of you sheep should've called in more, maybe you could've saved Tony's ass instead of letting these supposed "morons" ruin him. You guys are even dumber than I thought.

Inbreeds like 63 and Snoop DID destroy Tony's show. Snoop may not have called much the last year, but it took more than this last year to destroy TB in this market.

After we beat KY, and before the miracle in the SWAMP Tony made a comment to me at Tex's Place. His remark was that when UT is down the whole area economy of advertisment for talk radio was shot. People quit spending money. I suppose things looked Rosey and then the LSU loss!!!!!!! Apathy set in everywhere. I turned over to the SNOOZE to listen to Al Brown while Tony was using a sick day. J&J were sluggish, apparently calls were down also.
I have no idea how far ahead advertisment is sold. I do know that with SOS out of the SEC spark and interest have once again peaked. Even for the sssssllllooooooowwwwwww time of this market people are once again talking. Controversy stirs the market! But with that said WE are in a recession, no doubt about it! Money is tight and folks are not spending discretionary money as freely as they were a 1 1/2 ago!There is no debate on that issue. My guess is even the Snooze feels the pinch of the shrinking dollar base
Next I would really love to hear HOW influential the hiring of the new program manager LAST year after the lady that hired TB left the station played in on this decision!
As for JC, HHM, Stud, Bama Fever, etc they stir up calls. Even (lets all genuflect when I mention his name) Hallerin Hill has used Tenn Stud in the past to boost calls, interest, and controversy.If I am correct HH used Studs voice and presence in some advertising. The GodFather(lets genuflect one mopre time) Rush Limbaugh will cut calls to his rabid listeners to bring in Liberals he calls out on his show to stir it up! I know J&J have encouraged JC, Phil and others to call in. I was told I could call and they would allow me to use the handle PV instead of PLUMBERVOL. Fine with me, but! I want to talk sports not ask a question. They are not comfortable with me as a caller, I lack the skills (some they will allow to have conversation) to be a caller in that format. FINE, I also lack the desire to call and build up the relationship with J&J to have this repertoire. My point is J&J is not above playing the controversy card with our resident wolves.
J&J will keep the cheap shots to a minimum, but TONY's reply to these cheap shots was always his strength IMHO
For a guy that wasn't getting any ratings he sure is the talk of town now. Isn't it true that 1240 is dropping the entire sports radio thing. If Tony was the problem why wouldn't they just bring in someone else for a try? The reason Tony's show failed was because this market won't support a 24 hour sports station. The average joe doesn't tune in to sports radio all day. Plopping a sports show right in the middle of a music based station definately won't fly. That leaves few alternatives. There is more variety on 990 with Hal, Rush, etc. They end up picking up listeners who leave their dile on 990. Also you have a major broadcating conglomerate footing the bill. You have to spend money to make money. Everyone listens to 990 because everyone knows about 990.
As far as the wolves being the problem, well Tony could have kept them in line more at times. But, as much as I hated JC's lament of the big white, I loved to hate him. Tony gave his callers a lot more latitude. Just listen to them call 990 and notice their toned down rhetoric. (This town needs that building and loan if for no other reason than to have a place to crawl from Potter. It's a wonderful life, wouldn't it be a shame to waste it listening to 990.)

As for AIM "proving your point" if I find a poster that agrees with a point I make that sets it in stone? This is besides the fact that AIM listed NUMEROUS other reasons for Tony's downfall, you pick out one and list it as the singular reason. You become more delusional by the day.

BTW, I'm a Syracuse grad/fan, grew up in East Tennessee but went to the evil north for a few years to get "edumacated". I'd hardly classify myself as a sheep and I disagree with your point that every fan is a sheep for their favorite school/team.
TB latched on to the Jethros long before I started to listen. He made his bed with the 63's, the Snoop's, the Catfish's, etc. almost 10 years ago. Tony had enough sheep callers calling in without me, problem is he didn't put them on a throne. For example, listen to 990 and you can tell who the callers are that have the "freedom" to say what they want. They are callers like Jim from Illinois, Eric, Don from Sweetwater, Hitch, Snapper, etc. Anytime a 63, or an Enforcer call in, Giggles and and the RhineDull Cowboy get irritated and argumentative. They do this because they know the other caller is just calling to stir things up, not to bring anything of substance to the table.
63, Catfish, AIM, Snoop, and all the other detractors got what they wanted....TONY IS GONE.

All you ever hear out of the Sheep is how anti-UT TB and the show was or how the same negative callers were the only ones "representin." Yet the Mutton always seemed to be "hanging around" the outer fringes, dangling their little toosties in the deep but they themselves feared to venture into unchartered waters.
Sort of like this board. A few of the faint hearted stumble in (despite TBA's banner warning) and then proceed to whine and cry about the travisties committed by those who have more than two brain cells that don't agree with their grid sheep philosophy. There were a bunch of great callers on Basilio's show.
Brocky,Beano,RMI,Murriano,Aussie Gator and many others.RMI was my favorite caller.
One thing that turned off listeners is Tony let Small Mike call the Lady Vols lesbians. He let Gus tell fat jokes about Phil Fulmer.There were far too many idiots that called his show.I see nothing wrong with criticizing a coaches decision but the personal attacks on our coaches were uncalled for.I know a lot of people who got mad and quit listening to Tony's show because of Small Mike. He was the biggest idiot of all.Mike Keith banned him from sportstalk and Tony should have banned him too.
Another thing that hurt Tony was he waffled all the time. One day he would say the big 12 was the best conference then the next day he would say the SEC was the best.
With All this that I wrote I still liked Tony's show. He is very talented. I loved his shows where he had Dewey Warren,Kevin Mayes,David Rudder and other former vols with him. I liked his shows he did with Steve Russell also. Tony was very good and I will miss him.
