Would UT ever consider recruiting mostly instate talent? I doubt it!

HHM, this year TN may take more in-state players

January 13 2002, 8:29 PM

than in recent memory--if they get everyone they want:

Willie Henderson-commit
Ruben Mayes-commit
Gerald Riggs Jr.-commit
Jason Wilhoit-commit
John Henry-commit
Justin Harrell-commit
Jason Hall-commit
David Ligon- TN leads
Brandon Wright- Will TN offer?
LeRon Harris-TN leads

They would also offer DL Brandon Jenkins but he has no grades. Will probably attend Univ Memphis as a non-qualifier like Penny Hardaway back in the day.

BT, In state players tend to have more pride when it comes to representing their in state school. Tennessee is loaded with basketball players and I think Buzz will get his share. I also see this trend with Richt. They will sign 3-4 players from out of state this year. I love to get the in state guys.

"Would UT ever consider recruiting mostly instate talent? I doubt it!"

In football it will never happen. I'm of the opinion that UT has to make a solid commitment to keeping Tennessee's absolute best coming into UT. The SHEEP on this site claim I want to sign 25 KFL kids each year. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I am a critic of East Tenn high school football. Middle and West Tennessee are generally pretty fertile, so there's no excuse not to have a presence in the two biggest metro areas of the state.

Regarding basketball, UT has had many periods in its history where the team was mainly comprised of Tennessee kids. During the Dickey tenure, of hiring shitty coaches, we lost out on some kids who could have brought national prominence to this University. Had UT been the respected instate school at the time we might could have landed some instate talent such as Penny Hardaway, Malcolm Mackey, Corey Beck, Todd Day, David Vaughn, Tony Delk, Popeye Jones, Cedric Henderson, Duce Ford, Lorenzen Wright, Marlon Townes.

The state was good in the late 90s (95-99) when O'Neill was laying the foundation that Jed destroyed. Just think what it was like in the late 80s early 90s. But we had a coach who dispised recruiting, and an AD who couldn't care less about men's basketball. To compound the problem our inept AD hires one man based on the potential of his son.

I cannot begin to imagine a backcourt of Penny Hardaway and Allan Houston with Malcolm Mackey and David Vaughn holding down the fort inside.
