HAHAHAHA. I just couldn't help myself. Thought I would get the redundancy started early. Because we all know that after abut 30 minutes, every question or statement that is going to be made on that show for the next 3 years will be said. Then the redundancy will start. Oh sorry, actually, the redundancy will start with the 1st call, because there hasn't been anything new on that show in about 5 years.

I will also go on and say that Tony may allow a new caller to join in the 1st day just because I have been riding him pretty good here, but after a few days, no more new callers. Same ole crap, day in and day out.

Well you guys have a medium to vent your hatred for the university again. Good luck until Mr. Horne decides thart he has heard even of the same crap everyday.

Thanx all.

First question:

January 16 2002, 9:22 AM

"Tony, except for the $1 million buy out, are you able to now put yourself in the shoes of Uncle Jerry Green & his misfortune, and do you think you used your talent well at The Team or were there "other" off-air issues? In other words, according to you, the record of the past four years was great, but did callers & sponsors not "buy" in a way similar to the way they did not "buy" into Uncle Jerry Green's 4 year run?

TBA, OW has a point about the sports-related posts on this board in the last ten days.

Cheap Shot At Its Finest-- Congratulations

January 16 2002, 12:25 PM

It is unfortunate that TB lost his job but I am amazed it has taken this long for someone to make the correlation between TB's firing and Jerry Green's dismissal.
****
I also amazed the same folks that showed so much empathy and compassion to Basilio during this diffilcult time, are the same folks that continue to bugger Jerry Green after he had been relieved of his duties and to this day.
****
Can you say "Hypocrisy" !!!!!

Tony & his UTJethro contingent have talked...

January 16 2002, 3:22 PM

endlessly since their Uncle Jerry's misfortune about how Uncle Jerry would not have won this game or that or this player would have done this or that! Tony has gotten his second chance--will he learn & raise his show truly to the next level or will he continue to fold his arms & just roll the ball out to the UTJethros and their often classless & disrespectful comments! Will Tony impose the same type of discipline on the UTJethros that Uncle Jerry was ripped for failing to provide his players, which resulted in his misfortune?

Will Tony have the discipline to raise his show to the next level or will he cling to the crutch of Uncle Jerry Green as his UTJethro crew will demand?

The heat is on the Stable

January 16 2002, 3:33 PM

they failed at 1050, ZR failed, X-treme college football failed, they failed at 1240. SIX STRIKES AND YOU ARE OUT. They continue to go head up with the Sheep, but can't finish the job. The Sheep have to much for them to deal with. They are running out of time, and out of outlets.

Maybe Tony will CUT TIES. I swear if he 86'ed the Stable and the Jethro tagalongs, he'd be more competitive. But will he?

I suspect in 5 years 63, Catfish, and the boys will be calling Tony at his new gig. He'll be doing a fancast from his living room with about 50 listeners.

And they'll still be jealous of the Sheep.

Profound & Relevant Questions

January 16 2002, 9:14 PM

Here's a question I heard on the way home as I was being force-fed the snooze: "Hey Jimy, whatever happened to Basilio?" That was definitely next level.

I'm really grateful I heard that one, because one of the previous callers was still asking questions about the SECCG and I was beginning to get a serious case of the nods (not good when you're doing 90 on I-40). In the space of a week I've heard enough callers who are going to " hang up and listen to your comments" to keep me on Middlebrook Pike for weeks.

I have a suggestion for those of you who do not find Basilio to your liking; DON'T LISTEN!

I'll hang up now and pull over and puke.

OK, AIM, what rumor mongering????

January 16 2002, 10:19 PM

Was it when I noted several TN football players might be in academic trouble for the bowl game? If I told you that information came from Condrege Holloway would that be good enough for you? You do know he is part of the administrative staff for the football team don't you?

Or, is it the "Chavis to the NFL" rumor I put on here? Well, guess what? I still think Chavis is headed to the professional ranks. I may be proven wrong, but I never implied this situation as fact.

Tell me any others and I'll be glad to respond.

AIM, when I put a rumor on here do I not headline it as just what it is--a rumor? Show me where I put rumors on here and state them as fact. Don't waste your time. You won't find it.
************************

AIM, the way I see it calling you a "Walter Cronkite wanna be prick" was "stating fact" just the way you catagorize your vitriol against Basilio.

Thorazine Shuffle

January 16 2002, 10:52 PM

OW

When I was in school at UT I had the priviledge to work with the mentally challenged at Eastern State Medial facility. You would fit right in with the Thorazine shuffle group. The real question is when are we going to BEAT the Hell out of Florida like they have been doing to us for the past 10 years-98 & 02 excepted. Both our victories were scoreboard flukes even though we beat them unmercifully on the field the last two years. I'll hang up and listen.

Jerry Green

January 17 2002, 12:17 AM

Became an embarrassment to UT and once Unlce Jed could not be controlled any more, he was basicly offered up to TB as a sacrificial lamb. The latest scapegoat as to what is wrong with Tn basketball. Programs start at the Top folks! Hell the snooze hammered JG too, but the UTAD let the Team do their dirty work for them.
This community was primed and ready when Jed went down the road.

Now then....how much support has Buzz gotten from Tall Guy?? What has changed at TBA?? A few minor details, we have the Vol Bandits and untill I decide to show up in full war paint they ain't seen nothin yet. They have let fans move down quicker to the front row!! Big Deal!!! Thats more an indication to the problem!
I've said it before, buzzball needs to encompass more of a full tilt boogey spectrum to this basketball program other than sound coaching. Buzz Peterson needs to wear the Big Orange blazer of Ray Mears so to speak. Not that anyone could be another Coach Mears but the concept is the same.

IF BP is not allowed to make the type of mark on this BB program like RM did, then its gonna be Buzzball to Chapel Hill within two years.
If the antiBBTG does not retire soon and buzz gets away, it will be another decade debacle of the 90's for this one.

If it is darkest before the dawn, then Buzz now has the perfect setup to make some changes within his team now and encompass the program with his rubber stamp.
I got the impression that this was Buzz's intent when he was hired. Has the leash been shortened before Buzz even got to fetch one for the Vol BB Nation?

You make the call.

Alydar Proves My Point About

January 17 2002, 8:45 AM

how you Basillio sheep are so negative. We beat Florida, but he has to ask when are we going to beat the HELL out of Florida. He is not happy with the fact that we won, he calls it a scoreboard fluke.

Like I have said before, 20 years from now, when you look at the record, it win still ring up as a win. Beating Florida by 2 or by 20 got us into the position to go to the Rose Bowl, but we just blew it the next week.

Get ovet it guys. I think if you will look, there has never been a coached that won every game of every year and the National Championship every single year. Although the great John Wooden did come closer than anyone. Bear Bryant, the greatest football coach in history, lost a game or two I think.

Like Coach Fulmer says, we are in the hunt and the mix every year. Like it or not, it is the truth. I have a problem with Randy Sanders as Off. Con. as much as any of you do. But I like most of you think the problem is the Con. on the other side of the ball.

Thanx all.

Brock-- Last Winter You Made a Big Deal About ...

January 17 2002, 1:23 PM

UT basketball bringing Troy Bell to campus on an unofficial visit, but Jerry Green was no where to be found. You insinuated that Green was off somewhere fishing or maybe in a drunken stupor but the truth was
those were the only dates that fit Bell's schedule and UT explained to Bell and his family that Coach Green wouldn't be on campus at that time.
****
You never pointed out that two days after Bell's visit to UT, Green and one of his assistants made an in-home visit with Bell and his family. You also failed to point out that Boston College and UT were the only two major Division I schools to offer Bell a scholarship. ****
Isn't that fact relevant, Troy Bell is from Minnesota and the only two schools that think this kid is worth a Division I scholarship is BC and Jerry Green and his staff.
****
But wait there's more, I'm told that Bell and his family were disappointed that UT withdrew its scholarship offer after UT ran out of scholarships-- I believe that this happened after Harris Walker qualified. The kid actually wanted to come here but UT erred on the side of an in-state kid.
****
You want to talk about one of your calls last spring where you spouted an unsubstantiated rumor that Jerry Green was almost late for a game ????? That's big time news but it was never in any of the local papers or on any of the local talk shows-- I wonder why ???? I guarentee that if that was true Chris Lowe would have run that in the Tennessean or Basilio would have run it
on his show-- this story was never reported by a reputable source because it was pure fabrication.
****
How about all of the rumors of UT players being in Memphis the night before last years Ole Miss game ????
That was absoloute BS.
****
I got news for you and other knuckleheads on this forum, just because some disgruntled parent, who can't keep her children out of trouble, spews some non-sense about the coaching staff, doesn't make it correct. It also doesn't give some Walter Cronkite Wanta-Be Prick the right to go on every and any talk show and spew those type of rumors as fact.
****
This type of rumor-mongering is the same way you guys went after John Chavis several years ago and the same way you folks were mounting an offensive for Randy Sanders this fall. You folks think the internet and sport talk shows give you a right to attack any and everyone if UT comes up on the short side of a few games and I think it is reprehensible.

January 17 2002, 2:09 PM

Tell ya what, give Hyams or Low a call and ask 'em off the record if the story of Green arriving within 15:00-20:00 minutes of gametime actually happened.

Interesting to see if they tell you the truth. If they do, you'll be told it happened not once, but twice.
**********************

As for Troy Bell, I assumed anybody that "read the paper or listened to sportstalk" would know TN & BC were the only Div.I schools recruiting the young man.

I know Chris Ferguson thought Bell was one helluva player and thought TN should have been more agressive in getting him--Fergie wanted Bell more than the other two guards TN ended up taking.

Also, I NEVER insinuated anything concerning Jed's whereabouts during Bell's visit. All I know was when TB was on campus Jed wasn't and TN ended up making a HUGE mistake by not signing the kid.
**********************

Finally, when I called in and discussed the "buzz" about TN b-ball players being out past curfew last year in Memphis, DID I NOT say "there is a rumor going around..." or "the word I'm hearing..."? AIM, even you ought to be able to discern from those words that I wasn't stating anything as fact.
*********************

AIM, just to be honest with you, I think you've sniffed way too many jocks at all of these summer camps you attend. Since it's winter, maybe you can get on the phone with some of your hero's such as Vitale, Gibbons, Bilas, & Katz and get a quick fix in.

AIM,

January 17 2002, 2:11 PM

I hope I don't kill your thougt by agreeing with you. I don't recall the specific Brocky comments, but without a doubt the intent or programming format at 1240 was to run off Coach Green--no matter what it took or the evidence! It was a low point--no doubt & I do not think Tony's show has recovered yet.

The way Tony waved that Troy-Bell red flag in front of the UTJethros was one of the lowest points of the Tony's efforts to run off Uncle Jerry Green. The worst part was that Tony's show, the "I do it for the kids show", did not have the decency to step up and completely correct the facts about how Coach Green did in fact recruit the kid. That was too hard to swallow for Tony & the UTJethros--to say Uncle Jerry was not at fault for not being here on the visit. That was easy & cheap radio & it may have been entertainment, but it was a CHEAP SHOT in 3 months of the same! The UTJethros applauded, but don't let the facts get in the way of their search for the truth!

During the three months of thorough trashing of Coach Green, The Team 1240 should have been called Insinuation Station!!!

I Apologize For Lowering The Standards ...

January 17 2002, 6:12 PM

on this board but Mr Brock sometimes I think you take yourself way too seriously. You seem to feel like you have a right to personally attack anyone that doesn't agree with your opinion or when you can't win a debate. I love this forum and talk radio but I think it is crucial that folks, make sure their facts are totally-- 100% accurate.
****
I shouldn't have threw your Walter Cronkite back at you
but you crossed a line when you used that line on me last week.
****
You're facts have been wrong on two other issues that I think need to be pointed out:

No.1 Several months ago, when I called AM 990 following
Lynn Macgruder's arrest for growing/selling marijuana, you called in and stated "Although I made some good points, don't pay any attention to him because he's just a Michigan fan and hates UT". Pure Bull Crap.

No.2 You also constantly stated that I have some deep hatred/dislike of Basilio, which is also crap. When TB and I worked together, we did have issues regarding our time together/ departure from WQBB but I don't carry a grudge toward anyone. Tony's a friend, just terribly misguided at times and not he the most loyal fellow I know nad he's ...(Uh, oh I better quit while I'm ahead).

Unfortunately, I think you view Mr Basilio thru Orange colored glasses and I'm as tough on TB as he was/is on M. Keith, Bob and Bill, John and Jimy, Fulmer, J. Green, Delmonico and Doug Dickey etc; etc; etc;.

One last thing about TB, I don't think you realize that TB was practically given the keys to two multi million dollar radio stations and he was allowed to shape and mold them anyway he wanted and unfortunately "HE BOMBED". Do you realize how bad a job TB did ???? A sports talk radio station going out of business in Knoxville is the equivilent of an Enron type disaster.
****
I realize you and others give every excuse under the sun why TB failed: UT hated him, Mike Keith built to big an advantage for AM 990, the new program director hated sports talk radio, he's only an alternative blah, blah, blah.

At AM 1240 and FM 95.7, Tony had unlimited control and unlimited promotion but unfortunately he didn't work hard enough and his golden opportunity blew up in his face.

I have one last question for you, why do folks think AM 850 is going to be any better ????? Unfortunately unless TB makes some drastic changes I think the majority of Knoxvillians have made up their collective minds on TB. I hope I'm wrong.
****
If you or anyone thinks I 've crossed the line of civility, you can me at BlueBufoon99@hotmail.com.

January 17 2002, 7:11 PM

Sounds like you have a little jealousy or something towards TB and good ol Brocky. Though the UT "big boys" may hate Tony for exposing the truth, that doesn't mean things should not be said about them. TB brings an extra entertainment to sports that you can't find anywhere else in Knoxville and if his methods are objectionable then so be it...its his style. I don't plan to work my ass off 100% of the time when I get a job either, nor anyone who is sane.

January 17 2002, 8:33 PM

AIM, kinda comical when you call TB a friend in on sentence & then start the attack again in another. Just read your own damn post--you had to stop yourself from proceeding with another diatribe.

AIM, maybe it's just because I'm not very good with the written word but trust me, I do not take myself seriously at all. Just like most folks on this board, I like to debate & defend my position and MAYBE I do cross the line with my verbage from time to time. For that I apologize. However, if I truly believe in someone or something I will defend my position to the end.

AIM, once again I'm trying to figure out why you're the expert concerning talk radio when your career was firmly planted in reverse! Even if TB did "blow it" with the TEAM, I'd say it's a pretty good sign that he was rehired in less than a week.

Bottom line AIM: You are jealous of Basilio. It makes you sick that someone you regard as misguided and lazy has the on-air talent TB displays on a regular basis.

AIM, tell ya what I'll do if you'd like: I will buy you a super-radio so you can tune in to major market sports radio 24/7 and get to hear the brilliance of scribes and talking heads in one boring interview after another. While your doing that, I'll be listening to Philly, Beano, JC, and Small Mike along with MANY others that know their sports and are entertaining at the same time!

Excuse me if my negativity offended you in some way but I thought the Coaching staff could use a well intentioned critique. A lot of truth in here, a little bullshit, but one damn good discussion.
A person could learn or at least re-evaluate from just about anyone who has thrown in on it.
Couldn't they?
But if I ran a poll, you would not have 5 members who changed their mind because of ones debating ability like in the BCS pro/con thread.

"This was done in hopes that Fulmer might fire the current cordinators and HIRE REAL ASSISTANT COACHES...."

These guys that you say aren't "real" coaches have just happened to win the SEC East 3 of the last 5 years, and if weren't for 1 bad half of football they would have been in Pasadena. You want wholesale changes from a 11-2 season?

Are you from the Brock school of thinking? You know, hoping the team will lose just so the coach or coaches you hate will get fired? That's a pretty freakin' GUTLESS way of thinking, and I've told Brock that many times, so now I'm telling you.

You all are busting OW's balls, but most of his posts are CORRECT. Many Basilio sheep think that the 12/1 UF game was a "scoreboard fluke"? Fulmer and the rest of the staff will NEVER get the full credit from these ass-wipes.

Just keep up the negativity boys, keep bringin' it to the Sheep. Keep dissing the VolNation.

Brock, I Offered You An Olive Branch When I Should Have Given You ...

January 18 2002, 1:08 PM

the back of my hand. I gotta hand it to you, on a consistent basis you don't let the facts stand in the way of thae "GARBAGE" you spew.
****
I should have realized that you don't have a clue about talk radio after listening to you. One day you'll learn that there is more to hosting a sports talk show than saying:

"Great take Plumbervol"

"Great call Tennessee Big AL"

****
FYI another of the fabulous rumors you threw out turned out to be absoloute crap. South Central just hired a brand new morning team to for FM 95.7-- so much for South Central being in such dire financial straights.

AIM, will you give me the "back of your hand"

January 18 2002, 4:33 PM

the way Jerome Taylor GAVE YOU the back of his???

Are you off the floor yet???

Interesting!

Pretty comical the way you're rippin' me now that we're had a confrontion when it was only a few weeks ago you were giving me credit for improving on-air skills.

AIM, trust me, I know my limitations as a sports talk host. I will never be mistaken for broadcast professional with the "smooth" bravado of a Limbaugh or Hal Hill (as bad as I hate to use him as an example), nor do I have the comedic sense to be any kind of "riot" to listen to like Stern, Mancow, or Basilio. I also do not have "the voice" like many hosts. The only thing I have going for me is a decent amount of sports knowledge, a pretty sweet network of quality "sources", and I good idea of what average sport talk listener likes to get out of a show. That's it, period.

Do not think ripping me as a host is bothersome. Just the other day I saw a post of Sheepscape & the guy said something to the effect that "Brock's not near as good as a host as he was as a caller". You know what I told him in my replay? "You're right!"

This Is Getting Real Old

January 18 2002, 4:47 PM

I gave my email address earlier with the hope that we could continue this in private and not have this stuff denigrate into VH type of posts.

At least now you have your claim to fame in sports.

I like you look forward to the day you move to Wyoming or Montana.

"Great Take"

Tony, when are we gonna.........

January 18 2002, 5:01 PM

I am looking foward to having Basillio's wit back on the airwaves. But, anyone who thinks he was responsible for getting Uncle Jed fired is crazy. This must be the same group that meet at Tony Roma's and think they control the sports radio market in this town.

Bad news AIM...

January 18 2002, 5:02 PM

I have checked and both Montana and Wyoming have internet access and long distance phone service.

Much to your delight, even when I move I will continue to be part of SPS and may even call into shows from time to time.

Thought I'd let you know this so you'd get your weekend started off right!

One bad Half of Football

January 18 2002, 7:47 PM

Volhunter are you the same sheepster that posts on the sheep board? You need to go back to the idiot Board where there are only dumbasses who can't call you out on your happy horsesh-t. One bad half of football this year. Which bad half would that be? Ga second half? LSU one second half? LSU 2 second half? KY first or second half? Fla fourth Quarter? Arkansas first half? Notre Dame first Half? Perhaps your thinking of how we started the New Year in 2001 with that royal ass kicking for 4 quarters against Kansas State. Demand Excellence -1-4 2000-2001 against Ga. and LSU ain't next level Sheephead.

Annotational Information Menace (megalimanial)

January 18 2002, 11:47 PM

Has there ever been more tombstonisk archaic drivel from one has been?
What exactly have you done with or for anyone lately?

Hell AIM, listeners make a decision toward who they prefer based on whats out there and relivent now.
A take from one who has been there is good up to a point, but frankly I'm starting to tire of your gas.

But you are the one who appears to be turning green.

Volhunter Nonresponsive Namecaller

January 19 2002, 8:22 AM

Hey volhunter I was overwhelmed by your name calling logic. What about that half of football? Now add no pass rush, No Will Overstreet, and compensate for that with an idiot for a defensive coordinator and you better score 40 a game next year if you're going big time Bowling-See you in Orlando. Woody for Chavis is our only hope OBIWONKONOBI. Do you call everyone who doesn't agree with you a Fair-Weather-Fan? Is Dickey your Uncle. I didn't bail out in the Battle years I sure won't bail out now. BTW Nobody cares who came in second much less fourth. This is the third straight year we lost two SEC games. Are we down to Celebrating Division titles?

HAHAHAHAHA

January 23 2002, 9:00 AM

Someone put on another thread that Mike Beverly was a genius for putting Tony on. My question was then and still is, What are you going to call Mike when he fires Tony just like all the other stations did.

Mike will eventually see that 15 to 20 callers can not make the show profitable. Especially when you ask the same questions and make the same comments day in and day out.

Just like the old song said "The Song Remains The Same". A leopard does not chance its spots and so will Basillio not do. Even for the good of the show.

Can't wait to hear the same old dead non-inclusive show start up old again. Well to finish this off let me ask the first question again, "Tony when are we going to beat Florida?".

Thanx all.

Good God, how many times have you posted that same message on 30 different threads? To me, those
"15-20 same callers all saying the same thing every day" SQUAWK!(bird sound) are a far better choice than ONE moron repeating the same post day after day. We 15-20 listeners will welcome TB back with open arms, and you.........well, you can just listen or not.

I'll just hang up and listen to your answer and Go Vols!
