Yes, I love watching coach K get every single call in a game. Thats just great basketball. I hope all the great players continue to go too duke and they start beating everyone by 40 like the Lady Vols used too....Man thats great basketball!!
jealousy is not attractive. Duke gets all the calls (????). That was that what all the UT fans said about Fla. (gaffney catch in 2000, etc.). You try and knock down that which is better than you. If you can't beat them, say its not our fault, its someone else's. Duke's record speaks for itself. They perform well every night and take everyone's best shot. Can you say that about the UT football team. I doubt it. It must be that the officials are anti-UT.
but that isn't the reason they are as great as they are. Coach K, like him or hate him, does things right. He produces great players and great kids. Still, you're fooling yourself if you think they don't get the nod from the refs time after time. Hell, all a player had to do was look the wrong way at Battier and a charge was called.
As a Tarheel alum who recently moved to east TN
I had to weigh in on this. Duke is undoubdtedly
(and regretably) the best BB program in the country
right now and K is the best coach in college, but
the image presented by the media is not completely
accurate. K runs a clean program, but he is not
always the "class act" depicted by Vitale and others.
The man curses like a sailor, and uses the f-word
like a punctuation mark - a practice I think is
inappropriate when dealing with teenagers.
Furthermore, it's one thing to use bad language in
Cameron where no one can hear you anyway, it's quite
another thing when in the Charlotte coliseum and children are around. I've been to numerous games where
K and his players (especially Laetner and Hurley) were
dropping f-bombs all over the place and parents behind
the bench were visibly upset. K's obsession with winning also borders on a psychological mania. He relentlessly drives his players. I've heard he has calmed down in recent years because he was starting to get a reputation among media types of transforming into Knight, his old mentor, which would hurt recruiting. K also use to encourage his players to stay in school, even when it was not best for the individual.
This may sound like sour grapes from a Carolina fan (when can Felton start playing?), but in reality I respect K and the Duke program, even if I hate the snobiness of the University. I just wanted to point out that Duke is NOT perfect, and K is not a God.
After all, what have his players done in the NBA?
And if Duke is so great, why do all their students hang
out on Franklin St on Sat nights?
You are correct about Coach K. Remember, he is from Chicago and is every inch a Chicago product. He is sometimes portrayed as a very classy, professional man (which he is for the most part), but he also loses his patience, curses and chews ass when he needs to. I love the man as a coach and believe him to be a rare breed.
And, as a Dukie myself (I went to grad school at Duke) I can easily answer your question about Franklin Street: Have you ever been to Durham? Their ain't Sheeeiiitt to do there. Chapel Hill is like Gatlinburg for Duke students ;C)
The worst you can say about about coach K is that he curses like a sailor and that it is an inappropriate way to speak in front of teenagers? I say so what. Have you heard teenagers talk today?
With respect to Hurley and Laettner cursing, just look at the ass Rasheed Wallace made of himself at UNC and currently is making at the next level. Look at Tiger Woods who has been known to and caught dropping F-bombs on national television. Does that make him a bad guy? No! Is it right? probably not! Is it a flaw worth discussing? probably not! Does it impair his ability to do his job as succcessfully as he does? F*** no!
Duke players as professionals. I would certainly agree that Duke players have not been overly successful in the NBA. But, that is changing and is further testamant to Coach K's talent. First, prior to Grant Hill (Laettner, Hurley, Bilas, Alarie, Davis, King, Mcleod, etc.) Duke sent skilled but not necessarily athletic players to the NBA where there skills were reduced when faced with the amazing athleticism of the NBA. Grant Hill was a terrific, skilled, and knowledgable athlete who was a perennial All-Star until his injury problems. Elton Brand, a somewhat undersized power-forward lacking some athleticism, is a fringe All-Star who puts up consistently solid numbers. Steve Avery, still on a roster, should not have left as Coack K told him. Corey Maggette, a tremendous athlet who shold not have left, as Coach K told, but who is still developing for the young Clips. Shane Battier, Grant Hill without the athleticism, will be an All-Rookie selection who will put up consistent numbers for the next 10-15 years. On the horizon, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavey, and Chris Duhon, all of which are basketball players first, and athletes second. Coach K has had only one great athlete (Grant Hill and maybe Jason Williams), but he has had a number of great basketball players. Look at Mike Dunleavey. he was not even a top 75 recruit, yet he might the MVP of the best college team in the land while being the teammate of the best player in college. Coach K has won without phenomnal athletes. He has found and eveloped basketball players not athletes. He has molded them into a team where no player is more important than the program. All along the way, he has garnered the repsect and loyalty of his players. While not perfect, that is what is good and right about college athletics.
Psychological mania- what does this mean? he demands and receives excellence. He graduates law-abiding, hardworking young men who don't turn up on the news. His players, before, during, and after their Duke experience, speak highly of him. Is removing nameplates and chairs from a locker room maniacal?
Not to me. Sounds like strong leadership, proper perspective, and strong motivation.
Who did he encourage to stay in school when it was contrary to their interests? Avery, Magette? that's a joke, those kids were not ready, a point which has been proven over the last three years. Jason Williams will leave after this year with Coach K's blessing and a diploma. How is this contrary to Jason's best interests? What about Forte, what a joke that he left early. he should have played at Duke. A tremendous and clutch college basketball player lacking athleticism. He will be out of the league in three (3) years.
As a Duke grauduate and varsity athlete, I second Adam Vol as to the attraction of Franklin Street. Durham is a f***ing hell hole other than the campus. Also, the UNC coeds are easier.
I am sorry that Coach K has offended your ears with his sailor's mouth. While not perfect, he and his progarm are as good as it gets.
Finally, IMHO, Christian Laettner, on his stats, record, and performance in big games, was the best college player in the last 30 years.
what does that mean? some say Elvis lives and that Allah wanted Osama to crash a plane into the WTC!!!! Please give me somehting better than "some say." Who knows it might be JC.
Why are we talking about Duke? Everyday I can get all that I want on ESPN Radio, ESPN, ABC, NBC, and every other media outlet that covers college BB.
Frankly, K is a great coach, they're a great team, and that's about all I care to hear. We don't play them, and I don't care even a little whether they win or lose
I'm stuck here in Blue Devil/Tar Heel hell, and I can guarantee you nobody around here gives one crap about the "interaction" between Buzz and his guys, or the fact that RS just went down for the year.
Take it to a Duke board. Or tell us something that we haven't heard from the likes of Dicky V about a hundred times.
I can't stand watching those rich, blue blood, snobs, jump around like a bunch of pansies at Cameron during a bball game. And watching the token white boy walkons jump around on the sidelines with their little bowl-curly Q hairstyles. Unless you make a freakin' 34 on your ACT, who in the hell can afford to go to Duke except a bunch of Yankee snobs? See Christian Laettner. Or Boooby Hurley. Or Brian Davis...WHAT A QUEER.
Everybody says that they have such a great arena. Well, if we had about a 6500 seat arena, we'd have a pit too. You see, we have an Athletic Dept that actually has a budget, where we can build decent facilities.
I hate Duke with all of my being. Gimme a Tar Heel on their worst day, and I'll root for them. I'd rather root for a 2-28 Carolina, than to root for a 28-2 Duke.
DUKE SWALLOWS.

Well, Ole Piss basketball is stinky and rotten; Championships and rings are long forgotten; We kicked that ass, kicked that ass, kicked that ass, in BuzzyLand; Well, I'm glad I'm not in Oxfraud; Hooray! Hooray! Cause Rebels fans are Redneck flagwavers, who live and die without rings; Hooray! Hooray! I'm glad I'm uuuuuuuuuuup in Knoxville!
no one cares because no one likes or respects the players or the coach. BB has been dead here since Dandy Don Devoe. Buzz may resurrect respect for the program, but not without learning from the successes (Duke) and failures of other programs (UT and JG, KO, and WH). UT BB fans need to look beyond Rocky Top in order to see the direction the BB program needs to travel. Hell, at least UT football looked to Florida to help define its success.
you are a one trick pony. Does Duke play any other sports? I'd like to see those white boys with the Curly Q's try to line up with us on the track. Justin Gatlin would poster your ass.
Do we even need to bring up football? Have you won a game since Spurrier left?
Do you even play baseball?
See what I mean? We are a well rounded program, and we are slowly cleaning up our one weakness with hiring Buzz.
I'm sorry Dukies...YOU'LL NEVER BE CAROLINA.

He ought to write a book: "Hey, I was a Dookie, too."
Isn't Durham just a suburb of suburban NYC? [Not that there is anything wrong with that.]
Some of my favorite basketball moments have been Dookie moments that have been forgotten by Dookie Vee & Billy Packer:
1. Christian Laetner stomping a KY player.
2. The '95 ACC tournament when the Dookies had to play to get in the tournament.
3. The failure against UCONN.
4. fsu storming the court a week or so ago.
I do have several Knoxville friends who are Duke grads & are big Duke fans. Evidently they are only Dookie fans, because you never see them at University of Tennessee games. Dookie basketball is what it is all about I guess. I guess they thank espn.
a well-thought, factually-supported, grounded, and rational response. I dare say you have never witnessed a game from Cameron, yet somehow you know what it is like. The VolNation would not fill up a 6,500 seat, much less stand and cheer as required to make it a Pit. Hell, I don't believe you are allowed to standd in an outdoor, 100,000 + stadium. In fact, according to many of you, you are not even allowed to cheer at Neyland.
Duke does not strive to either UNC or UT for obvious reasons. I have one simple question for you. If you could trade your BB program for any any program in the country right now. Who would it be. Dare I say, Go blue devils! I know I wouldn't trade Duke's B-Ball program for the entire and whole athletic department at UNC or UT.
For OSVF, being a native Knoxvillian and Duke grad, I do regularly attend UT Footbal games and have gone to three BB games at the Tommy Pit.
Other than a game against fsu, has Duke ever played in a game televised nationally? I think maybe it was in the early 1950's? Did Spurrier get the Dookie's on the tube all those years ago?
I beleive the year Duke was co-ACC champions ( a whopping 7-4 record before getting humiliated 50 or 60 to 14 by Texas Tech in the bowl game) under Spurrier with Clemson and one other team, their game with Clemson and/or UNC was part of regional coverage provided by ABC. I might be wrong. However, I know that Duke BB is on national televison more often then both Tennessee football and basketball combined. I wonder whay that is. You either love them or hate them. Evidently, the Sheep in Tennessee hate them. It must be their success because they have not met in BB in 30 years to my recollection.
Trivia- what is Duke's football record v. UT in the last 20 years? how about all-time?
"If you could trade your BB program for any any program in the country right now. Who would it be."
UF. They've won the last 2 SECC's, and will probably win this year also. They were in the title game recently also.
Sky...more great Dukie moments:
Pervis Ellison and Milt Wagner getting theirs in 1986
The UCONN player hitting the shot at the buzzer to knock them out of the tourney in 1991 or so. I think the dude's name was Tate George.
Larry Johnson scoring at will in 1990.
Coach K crying at the PC after his team got beat in the 2nd round...Hurley's last game...WAAAAAH!
BV...I'll give Duke credit because I have too, but don't expect me or anyone else in here to kiss your ass. We hate Duke down here. Duke is the media kiss ups of this generation.
I remember in last years Final 4...Duke was playing in the Nat'l Semifinals. It was a tight game, and the team Duke was playing (can't recall who it was), just committed a turnover.
Then you heard Billy "I got snackcaked on Conference Calls" Packer giddily exclaim to Jim Nantz..."Jim, look at the leadership being displayed by Battier...he's sprinting down the court showing leadership...what a great young man!"
Give me a freakin' break! I saw Grindstaff hustle downcourt last night...is he some kind of Duke god too?
That's what I mean...the media proclaims Duke as the best thing since your first time at a drive-in...Jason Williams is the best PG in bball history, Laettner is the best player in the last 20 yrs, Grant Hill is the most athletically gifted player last decade, and Battier is the greatest ambassador that college sports has ever seen.
The media likes Duke because they are Yankee blow-hards too!

I wonder who Coach K hit? I bet he punked out one of the preppy little walkons. He probably just messed up his hair, and the dude went crying to his stylist.
We can't mess up those Curly do's!

what is your source for this wild and bald allegation that Coack K hit a player? I would guess you would request the same of me if I came on here and said that "some say" Fulmer is a regular cross-dresser who regularly frequents the carousel. I see none of the anti-duke posters rushing to support your to-date unfounded accusation. Stand up and show some accountability and basis for blatant slur.
As for you VH, UConn and tate George knocked out Clemson (elden campbell, dale davis, etc). Duke won the national championship that year. You must be thinking of when Duke won the NC and Christian Laettner hit a buzzer beater to beat the Huskies.
Why does Grindstaff stand out like Battier did. Is he an ALL-Amercian, is he the defensive player of the year, has his team won any championships? No, No, and No. This is not to say that Grindstaff does not represent the school well. He does. But, that is it. Nothing more, nothing less. You have to have talent as well.
Great UT football moments, lets look just over a month a go. Being snack-caked by LSU while holding Roses in thier mouths. How about, Georgia the last two years. How about Nebraska, Nebrask, K-State steamrolling the Vols three years running. certainly Duke has lost (not failed) on numerous occasions. How about, the first of their NC when they beat the undefeated and most-dominant and criminal college team sense the Wooden era (UNLV with Johnson, Augmon, Hunt, Anthony, etc.) in the national semifinals after losing the year before to the same team by 40 in the championship game. That is my Coack K cried. I guess a coach cant' cry about one of his palyers leaving a program he had build.
yea, he was a trooper all-right. How many high schoolers were picked ahead of him in the draft again? 3-4?
Battier is just another in a long line of OVERHYPED Duke bball players. Laettner, Hurley, GRANT HILL, Maggette, Parks, Ferry, (do I need to go on? ok I will!), Dawkins, Wojo, Avery, Brian Davis, have all SUCKED at the next level. But they were media hype jobs in college. Dickie V should have been Duke's PR director!
Brand has a shot...but he's with the Clip joint now. Expect him to slip into obscurity too.
Why not go to UNC and spend the summers with Vince, Rasheed, Jerry, MJ, Worthy, Perkins, Jamison, etc?
Oh, I forgot, Dukies have better hair do's!

Excellent thread, as a matter of fact. But it just goes to show what kind of arrogance a dookie can bring to the table. I mean, just look at Coach K and his players interact with each other? What an arrogant statement.
Duke University = NJU-Durham. That is, New Jersey University at Durham. What a bunch of pricks.
a summer with Rashitty Wallace, sounds like fun. Vince Carter is the softest NBAer of all time who will never win anything. Jamison, fair player on a terrible team. Sam Perkins, fair player won a few championships on others coattails. Liked the "wacky tobacky". MJ, enough said. But, my question to you is after MJ, how many Championships have those wonderful NBAer's won? I think i can count on no hands)
BTW, it is not arrogance if you back it up! You are right that Duke could be the New Jersey of the South, but it sure was a great place for this native Knoxvillian for 4 years.
"But, my question to you is after MJ, how many Championships have those wonderful NBAer's won? I think i can count on no hands)"
Ummm...seems like I referenced...WORTHY? Seems like he won about....FIVE?
Tell me once more about your "great" Duke education, would you?
Hell son, I'm a Tennessee redneck, and I've forgotten more stuff this week then you'll ever know!

if my recollection is correct, Worthy was before Jordan, not AFTER. I think it was the Lakers Dynasty before the Bulls Dynasty, but maybe you just forgot that which might be easy considering all that knowledge you have of everything.
"great" referred to my experince, not my education. I graduated near the bottom of my class. But, I had a good time doing it.
after doing his usual spin list of "GREAT" KY players(that must be in the contract), he felt compelled to bring up Shane Battier for the 300th time. "GREAT" this & that--the usual. It was SEC basketball!!!! KY v. Auburn!
When did the process of lip locking onto the Dookie's start? When did the old maxim of letting a man's actions speak for him go out the window?
DOOKIE VEE plus all the branches & sprigs off the the Rick Pitino & Coach K trees are ruining college basketballl! It is all about personality, STAR SEARCH, & air time instead of about the beautiful game of basketball. I don't know if the Dookies started it on espnspin, but they certainly have perfected it!!
I would love to be able to argue with you but Duke is the best college basketball program.

Coach K is a great coach. He is a great recruiter. It is amazing that in 99 they lose Elton Brand,Corey Maggette and the Avery kid early, Then Duke will say so what, We will get Jason Williams,Mike Dunleavy,Carlos Boozer and Chris Duhon. Some schools will get McDonald high school all americans(like UT) but Duke will get the very best players. The rich get richer. I don't like Duke but i will give them their due. I would love to see UT be as good as Duke. I think Coach K started at Duke in the 80-81 season. UT beat Duke that year by 25 or 30 points. That was a great season for UT.
Another thing! Tony Basilio and these other UT fans were saying last year that the Vols were more talented than Duke. What were they smoking? None of the Vols starters last year would have started for Duke.
