involving Deljuan Robinson.
Hyams said Robinson was from Memphis and was visiting TN but was not rated in the News-Senseless Top 25 list.
Does Hyams not know (evidently he doesn't) Robinson's not even from Tennessee (hails from Hernando, MS) and is rated by just about every recruiting service as one of the top two defensive end prospects in the nation?
At least Bill Kreis can come on and cover for him.
What I really loved was the most hardcore, sheepy news reported during that first 30-minute, caller-free segment where Hymens informed us that Casey Clausen was ranked as preseason #4 for the Heisman by the Sporting News. Any good sheep walking around town tomorrow certainly needed to know that very important information for tomorrow's water-cooler talking point, excuse me, water-trough talking point, amongst the rank-and-file sheep. That tidbit out to be good for three or four shows at least. Honest to God, other than the few minute ride home in the afternoon, I NEVER listen to that BS, NEVER. Basilio may have sucked (according to AIM) at dragging in ratings, but I sure as hell miss the show. Both the entertainment value as well as PERTINENT information. Go to hell 990!!!!!!!!!!
I have defended them many times, because I enjoy talk radio, however I can get it, but no more. Yes Brock I heard Hyams say that. When I first heard Hyams, maybe 2 yrs ago, he was knowledgeable, and actually had great info, especially on recruiting. Now, he simply knows enough to cover his ass. He has ZERO new info, which is strange, because if I were him, I'd just call Hubbs up 10 minutes before the show and get a rundown. He is LAZY, and just shows up to do the show now. Sadly, Dewey is much the same way.
If I were to do a show, I'd spend at least 2 hours before the show doing research, trying to find scoops, and making a few phone calls. Let's see...2 hours research + 3 hour show = 5 hours. Is a 5 hour day to much to ask?
The whole 990 staff is LAZY. The only difference between them and Tony is they at least show up to work most of the time. The Sat morning show a few weeks ago where a caller had to inform Hooker and Giggles of the Stallworth situation confirmed their laziness. They simply showed up at about 8:30, ready to take calls.
Finally, and this is what set me off, I think I heard Giggles say yesterday that they were going to do an hour segment on BASEBALL today. Baseball? Now I'm all for talking baseball in May or June, but we are in the middle of recruiting, and the middle of basketball. Baseball? This must come from Giggles...I swear he'd tell you an update about the Yankees 2nd string left-fielder before he'd take a call about the Florida game during UF week.
Please come back Tony!

Well, Ole Piss basketball is stinky and rotten; Championships and rings are long forgotten; We kicked that ass, kicked that ass, kicked that ass, in BuzzyLand; Well, I'm glad I'm not in Oxfraud; Hooray! Hooray! Cause Rebels fans are Redneck flagwavers, who live and die without rings; Hooray! Hooray! I'm glad I'm uuuuuuuuuuup in Knoxville!
say that I did not realize how little I did listen to 990 over the last 5-6 years. The light is certainly being shown on 990 while Tony is on break. It is certainly musty in there.
That Friday roundtable of arrogant KNS writers was the sorriest radio I have heard since Peter Brown. Arrogant writers who act like they have all the information about everything in sports! Those guys have no idea where people are actually getting their sports information. I had not listened to a complete segment in a while. They act like plantation owners. I cannot stand arrogant sports writers sitting around speculating that Kelley Washington might leave if Dontae comes back! They did & their were no facts presented!!! Zero! Hyams & Wilkie just sat there and played along. You can bet that 990 is going to stage & flame the fact that Kelley & Dontae are on the same team just like they did when Peyton & Brandon Stewart were here! Mark my word. Contrived & formatted at 990 and I don't care what they say.
I don't mind them saying they don't root for UT, but playing up stories to drive a wedge between fans, players, & coaches. Example: They tried last week to build a wedge between Vincent & Buzz!!
Mark my word, the KNS is going to cut back that fat before long. jmo
P.S. Dave Hooker has turned into nothing more than a smug Dr. Laura.
did you catch the interview yesterday with the kid that got kicked out of TBA? What was that about? I don't have a problem with the fact he got kicked out. If you listened, the kid ADMITTED that he was warned about his sign, and then flashed it again. So, he got the boot.
I have a problem with the rule. People should be allowed to take NON-VULGAR signs in. Maybe it would liven up that tomb. I remember in 1990 or so, people could take signs in, in fact, some students were sitting right behind the goal, and would show a poster of Cindy Crawford in a bikini during free-throws...it even got a chuckle from Shaq during the LSU game that year.
But if that is the rule...that is the rule. People should follow the rules. Maybe instead of doing this NON-STORY, 990 could have investigated this "mysterious" recruit from Memphis that isn't on the KNS's radar screen for instate recruits.
But Rivals has him as a top 2 DE from Mississippi. Go figure.
I think since Jimmy stopped his 900 recruiting info line, he quit working too.
I agree with you OS...listening to 990 off and on over the years is tolerable. But listening to them for 3 solid hours over the last few weeks is unbearable!
manufacturing a non-story. Hooker really got to the bottom of it with that, "Do you think you will go to UT games in the future?" The kid said, "Oh, yeah." or words to that effect. It was a great 990 manufactured NONSTORY!
I agree let them have banners, but until they change the rule, enforce it. They should have torn his sign up & thanked him for his support & then let him stay in his seat.
the whole goal of that story was to make that kid say he wouldn't ever go back to TBA! Well, that didn't happen did it Hook?
The kid will be back in there tonite, probably with another sign just to piss off that "usher with a mustache", and all will be well.
It was funny how Hooker kept baiting the kid to describe the usher. Was he wearing an orange jacket? An orange shirt? Have a walkie talkie? The kid finally said that he had a vest on, and wore a mustache. Probably describes about 6-8 ushers over there!
Hookers half assed Perry Mason routine blew up in his face! I guess he was the "good cop"...I expected Jeff Jacoby to break in at any moment with his "bad cop" routine and try to rough the kid up.
Is that Part II of the interview? Will we hear that landmark piece of journalism today?
I can't wait!

on the "roundtable" segment on 990. That sir, is what I call awful radio. John Adams thinks he's Jerry Seinfeld Jr.
I am also in complete agreement with your accessment of Dave Hooker. That guy is as smug as they come. How 990 let Hubbs get away & then hired Hooker to replace him is beyond me.
although Dave isn't ready to win any awards I think he's improved tremendously over the past few years and I think he keeps getting better. He's more than respectable.
*****
Although I will point out about 18 months ago, John and Dave did a Saturday morning show from somewhere in Pigeon Forge and their special guest was Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz.
We'll during the interview with Malone, it came up that the Jazz was about to make an off-season acquistion of some note. Well Dave and John tried getting the scoop out of Karl but he kept telling them that they were the sports reporters and he didn't want to leak the news.
Well it turns out the Jazz had just signed Danny Manning to a free agent contract and this little nugget was in that mornings edition of the News-Sentinel. I still can't forget how inept "The Boys" were that day. They didn't even read the newspaper before going on the air.

Yep, you can't miss 990 this afternoon. They will have interviews with 5, countem 5!! Smokies players and or coaches. They giddily informed the listeners that they had so many minor league people to interview that it would have to be 'staggered' throughout the show. AAAAIIIIIEEEEEEE....kill me please....shoot me...make it stop <SOB>
As for Dave Hooker, he is irritating. I have very rarely seen the anger he brings out in callers after one of his interviews. He may be knowledgeable, he may be professional, but he is still fricken IRRITATING.
Giggles is doing a freakin' BASEBALL show in mid-January.
It's must hear radio!

he can't do an interview or give a report without stuttering profusely. He really needs to work on his on-the-air performance because it's BAD radio (pay attention to his stuttering next time you hear him). Not to mention he comes across as smug, arrogant, and condescending.
if you're gonna be arrogant and condescending, at least be informed. He is yet another one that DOES NOT DO HIS HOMEWORK. He attends every practice, yet seems to know little about the team.
The Stallworth revelation from 2 Saturdays ago is the one that sticks with me. It shows that he's really not that passionate about covering UT, or about doing his job.
He'd just soon go home and watch a Seinfeld re-run.
