hi all :)

i'm the proud owner of the new Bronte digital amp... realli happy with its performance coz its a great improvement from my prev int amp...

however, i do have a slight problem with it...

1. i hear a rather obvious (not loud, but obvious to my ears) hiss coming from the speakers at all times. Was wondering if this is a manufacturing defect? or a characteristic of digital amplifiers?

2. when i listen to Dido's No Angel album, track 10 keeps clipping. No other tracks in other CD's that i've heard cause any clipping. Was wonderin why this happens?

My setup is as follows:
Rega Planet 2000 CD Player
Sonneteer Bronte Digital Amplifier
Ruark Sceptre Speakers

hope u guys can shed some light on this... thank you

cheers.

nia

Dear Nia,

I do believe it is inherent of the digital drive system. In most cases it should not be audible at normal listening distances unless your speakers are extremely sensitive. Can you provied me the spec of your speakers?

Also if you select to an input with nothing connected to it does the hiss still exist? Or you could simple disconnect all your sources from th eamp and listen if the hiss is still present.

Regarding the clipping. It is quite unusual to get the amp to clip unless the recording level is particularly high ( I mean out of spec high!) together with a CD player with higer than normal output. Please check the spec of your CD player as our amp is calibrated for maximum 2.0V input and some Cd players goes as high as 2.3V. If you player does produce very high output then we can of course reduce your amplifier's gain to accomodate your CD player. This is done internally.

In anycase we will try to get hold of the same recording and have a listen and measure it. Unfortunately we shall be at Las Vegas all of next week and wont be able to check this issue out until the following week.

In the mean time can you tell me if you are in the UK? Please also inform me the dealer you bought the amp ferom and if possible the serial number on the back of the amp.

Best regards
