As I understand it, the Rx unit receives the digital signal, and converts to audio, right? Basically a DAC? Or is it the USB device that acts as a DAC?

Yes you are correct in your assumption. The DAC is at the receiving end. This way the quality of the signal all the way through to the point of delivery.
