Turntables need 1)a grounding lug and 2) a phono input, the SP808 has neither. A mixer really is key for a turntable. I guess you could tweak the levels on the mic input and run the turntable off of that but it probably won't be optimal. From the mixer just run it into the SP808 main in.

With my mixer I run the 'cue out' (the headphone monitor) into the Aux in of the SP808. Anything running into the main in of the SP808 can have effects applied to them and anything running into the Aux in cannot have effects on them.

When I sample from the turntable I start sampling with a level then I just scratch the sample into the pad and do a little endpoint adjustment to fit the BPM.
