help with FX - Aux Out / Aux In

This is probably easy but for some reason I can't seem to get it to work.....I want to send a track through the aux out to an external fx processor and record the signal coming back through aux in....I've adjusted the level of the designated track's aux send but don't seem to be getting the desired effect....what am I missing?
