Transmitting midi again

Is it possible to upgrade the software of the SP808 classic to that of an EX or is that not possible at all? I have the original SP808 so was wondering if it's possible to upgrade - basically is the EX more of a software update rather than it being the case that no matter what the original 808 can't transmit midi date at all from its keypads?
