go for it, easy job, took me 20 minutes. ive updated two classics, the first i updated the zipdrive before the OS, it worked fine.
somewhere around is a step by step guide on how to do it.
just do a search.
main points are get an 'atapi' 250mb drive (iomega seem very good) and set the jumper to the correct postion on the back of the zip case (use the old 100mb drive as a guide).
you don't need any special tools, other than a phillips head screwdriver and a beer or 3.
