Issues with Zip Drive & Discs in SP-808

by

If anyone has managed a similar mishap or experience, or if I am
missing something really simple (which is VERY possible)...please
let me know what you think...while I have some aptitude toward
electronics and computers in general, but I am totally new to this
type of machine.

I bought a used SP-808 yesterday and managed to feed it a disc that
killed the Zip drive (one of several discs that came with it, but
this one clearly has issues and damaged the head of the drive).
Before I managed to do that, things had been moving along
swimmingly, and several of the other discs had good info on them and
the unit seemed to work great.

Although I have ordered a 250 MB Zip, as I plan to upgrade to the ex
operating system, I wanted to get everything in good working order
first b/f going any deeper with upgrades etc.

Tonight I grabbed a used 100 MB IDE zip drive out of a scrap
computer that was laying around (I have never witnessed the computer
or any of it's pieces function first hand, but have been told it
SHOULD be good...) and replaced the damaged unit in the 808. At
first nothing happened and then I realized that the jumper was not
set to master on the drive--after fixing that, the unit now at least
seems to function, however the red disk light by the LCD display
does not light up at all(should it?) nor does any info from the disc
show up (like the sample banks etc). I am using a disc that I know
was good and had info on it, but when I put it in, it tells me that
it is "not formatted" for use by the machine and after I reformat
(quick or standard) and try to save a sample I keep getting an error
that tells me there is no space...?

Has anyone had IDE cables go up on them in their 808? The ribbon
looks like it takes a wicked bend and that if it has been still&
maybe dry-rotting for too long and then tugged on inadvertently,
then perhaps I just killed IDE ribbon in the course of replacing the
drive?

If I am missing something stupidly simple I would be extatic. If
anybody has any thougths as to any next diagnostic steps, I would be
hugely grateful.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!
