you have scored a machine quite capable of fulfilling your needs.
though i hope you have the 250Mb zip drive to get over an hour of recording time. if you have the 100Mb zip, only 20 minutes or so, it is easy to upgrade.
a phrase in rolandspeak is any recorded piece of music or (in my case) noise, assigned to one of the pads, that will play when you press the pad.
you can alter phrases as you desire, add fx, trim it, stretch it, etc,

to record music and voice, i suggest you use the 808's sequencer to lay out each phrase (recording) to start and finish in the order you desire. you can use up to 4 tracks at a time, if you need more you can 'bounce' everything onto one track to free up three. (i never have to do this - 4 is plenty for me)

it may seem complicated at first but the 808 is quite straightforward once you spend some time with it. (a manual helps)
