Please read !!

by Atlanta

Can anyone recommend an Audio Interface with Digital, MIDI, and Optical? How about the Yamaha UW500 ?

Also, I'm assuming that one optical channel = stereo correct?

I like the UW500!

by John Westwood

It's a pretty solid unit, and have been using it for almost 2 years now! The optical and the 808 is THE BEST! (stereo, yes) However, the optical tends to drag the BPM around a bit? But I guess it's the same for all these units these days. But for inputs and outputs and features, the UW500 is a pretty stealthy little box now.

Thanks, one more question ...

by Atlanta

Appreciate the help. Couple more things...

1. How was the noise level? I find that I get a lot of background noise with the 808, do you have any suggestions on getting rid of the noise? Software programs?

2. I'm looking to record using this interface, and hearing that it messes with the BPM's I'm worried. Should I go with a more expensive solution?

No probs, it's safe!

by John Westwood

As for the noise of the 808 - that's probably the Zip drive, which can be murder around guitars and microphones. Best solution is to move the input gear as far away from the 808 as possible. As for software, I use WAVES Restoration bundle, which is pretty pro stuff! But good to get rid of 60hz hum, white and pink noise and such.

Now you said 1 question - and I see #2

Optical is the only one that drags BPM's around, and it can very well be just MY configuration? The 808 keeps steady regardless, but other MIDI gear like a Yamaha FX550 that looks for a 'constant' MIDI clock really suffer. But then the FX550 is like 15 years old, and was intended to be driven by a beat box.
Pretty well every MIDI connection will have drift/delay these days, and most gear has 'error compensation' installed to keep things tight. The 808, you may see the BPM move slightly - is really rock solid!

And the UW500 is really flexable in being 'analog', or 'digital', and 'syncable'. The only other unit that looks good is Edirols latest and M-Audio's Firewire 410 - that's a freakin' SCHIZNIT! www.maudio.co.uk

But the UW500 is pretty stealthy still.

So DOPE! Let us know how you like it!

by John Westwood

Didn't mean to twist your arm so hard! But that's great you scored the 410. Give a shout back and let me and others know how it works out for you? I'm pretty stoaked about my Lacie FireWire HD, and accidentally streamed a whole realtime CD off it thinking it was on my HD. FireWire is pretty amazing!

Best of luck!

roland sp808ex conpared to the roland A-6??

by

I was wondering what the consensus is about using the A-6 instead of sp808ex? I'm thinking about buying an A-6 just because of its huge memory capacity and all the options it has of hooking up to a computer and all of that. If someone could please give me advice that would be great!

beat matching

by Dj_KoK

Hi. I've had an 808ex for about 3 months now. I LOVE the thing. it's hours and hours of endless fun. anyways. i've got a lot of stuff sampled, and a lot of it is all at different speeds. i'm trying to "beat match" samples, so they flow well together. Sometimes i get the "out of range" error, and the times it DOES match, it usually sounds like crap. could you guys help me ouy/ give me tips or pointers, on how to properly do a beat match. I've read the manual, but well, it's a roland manual, and like most others, not very helpful..thanks..

Re: beat matching

by dnark

Sometimes the problem is that the length of the samples need to be tweaked at one end of the other -- and sometimes you can only do it by ear once you get down into the really tiny increments.

Also, the SP doesn't reallyl nail a tempo precisely, so to speak, when you stretch or adjust -- it can slide over .01 or something and not really tell you. ACID does something similar but is a little more consistent if the samples are close.

Maybe someone else has some other suggestions --

So, does anyone out there have any suggestions for free and or cheap software or hardware that does GOOD temp matching ? I'm a poor college kid and afford to spend a TON on fancy hardware. I'm still pratically broke from teh 808. but man, it's worth it..

Howdy Ho Everyone - Back From the 7 Seas!

by John Westwood

Oh man, it's so late now - and I'm bushed. But just to let the ol' croanies like dnark and knobtwister and the rest of the gang that I'm alive and well. Well - not 'well', more like unemployed.

Anyhoo, been making lots of music - and of course, my trusty 808 is right at my side!

I have to grab some shut eye now, but I'll be back rise and shine tommorrow to catch up on all these posts!

Re: Howdy Ho Everyone - Back From the 7 Seas!

Hey Steve:

Welcome back; actually, you haven't missed much. Very, very sleepy list, but that happens. Probably inevitable.

Pbass has ended up here:
http://www.cordovanmusic.com/
Emailed him a couple of times. Some really nice stuff. A couple of his earlier CDs are available at emusic.com.

An Ottawa band has inquired about me remixing a couple of downtempo tunes -- classic-rock type stuff; would be a challenge. Thought about rattling Fax's cage -- maybe you'd be interested as well. ?

Bummer about being unemployed. Man, where do you start?

Thanks Bud! :)

by John Westwood

Cool! Yeah, I see the 'pop ups' are still as strong as ever here. And PBbass, must check him out too! Liked his Dipstick stuff ALOT! And where did Fax va-moos too? He needs a 'wake up' call, or something?

GG, Fred, Sean the Robot, and those folks - did they all drop off?

But still truckin' with my 808! It's so much easier than cutting and pasting in some 'software studio' - just fire up those pads and jam them baby!

The 808.WAV convertor is a big FREAKIN drag! At first I thought 'Okay - don't ever defrag on a PC. That's what causes the 'Disk Full' message'. Then feed it a freshly formated Zip disk from the 808, and that seemed to cure it, but then 'Disk Full' comes back for no apparent reason? Delete, reinstall, delete, stick the icon right into Adaptec's folder, or outside in the C: drive - sometimes the little bugger works, many times it doesn't.

Just checked out Rolands Vari-OS as well - guess what? The dude at the music store couldn't make it work, and thus no 'demo'. Surprise, surprise. ROLAND - stick to 'Hardware', huh?

But other than that, just 'cold illin' and jammin' when I can.

VOX never Drops.

by

Nice to hear from you! I never actually "dropped", just went into hibernation-lurk mode. I just recently re-listened to all the SUNsongs the other week - still impressed!

Most recently I have been toying with Cubase SX by Steinberg. QUITE the learning curve on that little sucker. And a can of Raid won't help the bugs. But what potential! I used it to remix "Angel" from SSI. Actually had the guts to add some vocals!

The Voxter Rocks!

by John Westwood

Heya Buddy - long time no see! Glad to hear you're still grooving! Actually, it was the Sun Songs that made me get the internet as well. I was cleaning, and came across all the Sun stuff - and I got all misty eyed and lonely.

I'm livin' LARGE on Orion Platinum, and sadly - the 808 has taken a bit of a back seat to it. But when it comes to jammin' loops and get ideas going - it's still DA BOMB! Cubase seems pretty 'heady', so I was always kinda scared of it? But OP is right up my alley, and getting better all the time.

The world of 'soft synths' is just scary. It seemed like yesterday I was spending $4000.00 for a EX5 and all it's 'options'. Now, I buy a Computer Music mag for $15.00 and get 3 full soft synths, 250 Samples, and a VST effect plug or two? Just insane!

But I think it's safe to say I'm 'full up' now.
Motif's, Neurons, Ions, Fantoms - naaaaaah!

Good to see you again!

Cool Brian! So if you put this on DVD, will it cue to the same times that Roland had marked the chapters on the video? That certainly would be much better than FF/RW the VCR to 20:48 or 52:12 etc.

I'm unsure why you would go anywhere to have it done when it's so easy to do yourself.

The Files section of the Yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SP-808USERS/
contains step-by-step instructions. Find the best price on a new Zip drive here

Good luck.

D-Beam and new user

by

SP-808EX version 1.0

When i use the D-Beam controller for FX... I woud like to have the effects value (Dry/wet) go from 0% to 100% depending on movements... But it always resets itself at a low value of 50%..... basically, for a reverb i would like the FX to be 100% dry until i move my hand across the D Beam. But as i said, it always resets to a default value of 50% wet/dry.... help? I have had this unit for about 3 hours, and i get the basics, but theres a few things i need help with.... but damn. this is about the sexiest machine i have ever had the pleasure of working with. it looks good in the light, and even better in the dark. beautiful.

See if this helps?

by John Westwood

I currently use optical to my UW500, and coax (rca) to my oooooold DAT machine. Go to SYSTEM/DISK button and select SET SYSTEM PARAM? in the menu. INPUT SOURCE should be DIGI 1 is your RCA/coax, and DIGI 2 is your optical.

Select, and you're set!

maybe so he doesnt have to buy midi thing for his computer, cuz they'ed cost about the same or more
and when hes done he can erase the data and still have a disk, atleast i think you can erase the stuff on the disk
but i could do it for you
i upgrade with midi, and since midi confuses me ill never use my stuff, so what your asking makes sense if your like me
dont know how you'de wanna do it tho
you say you would pay?
um, either you could send me a disk with an extra mailer, you could have it allready with postage, have it weighed with a disk and all so you know its right, then i could send you a disk with the ex os saved to it
if that works ill give you my address

archival stuff on vocoder use

by dnark

WildStYle's ----> How to use the Vocoder

there are 4 ways to use the vocoder patch:
1. mic =source, line in= modulator
2. pad=source, pad=modulator
3. mic=source, pad= modulator
4. mic=source, track audio modulator

here are the instructions for each method.

1. mic =source, line in= modulator
- note: only audio on the (Right) side of the line input is used for modulation.
- im not sure but, i believe the left input can be used as a source instead of the mic.
- anyway, talk into mic while playing synth into line input.
Done.

2. pad=source, pad=modulator
- "shift" + " mix common"
- scroll to FxLoc. change to (INS MASTER)
- "shift" + "track A effects button" change track A balance to ( L63 ).
- "shift" + "track B effects button" change track B balance to ( R63 ).
- "shift" + "song/track" this activates the pad to track option
- press and hold a pad in first row (pad 1,5,9,13)
- press a pad in row two (pads 2,6,10,14)
Done.

3. mic=source, pad= modulator
- press "shift" + " mix common"
- scroll to FxLoc. change to (INS MASTER)
- press "shift" + "MIC/LINE" effects button, set balance to L63
- scroll further down to Pad balance, set to R63
- talk into mic while holding down a pad
Done.

4. mic=source, track audio modulator
- press "shift" + " mix common"
- scroll to FxLoc, change to (INS MASTER)
- press "shift" + "MIC/LINE" effects button, set balance to L63
- press "shift" + "track A effects button" change track A balance to ( R63 ).
- make sure status is enabled (green light) for track A
- playback track while talking into mic.
Done.

First off, I think you need to
understand what a vocoder effect is supposed to do. If you've heard some of those old school songs (and
many new) where it sounds like a synthesizer is saying words, that's a vocoder effect. You play the synth
and sing or speak as if backing the synth part. Like a wah pedal, you can get some speach type effects. The
melody of the vocoder will depend upon the synth part, and the loudness and modulation will come from
the vocals. If you are wanting to hear more of the unaffected vocals, hit shift+FX info with the Vocoder
effect activated, then cursor over to VOC in the chain of effects, hit ENTER, and scroll down till you see
MICMIX Level. Here you can adjust for more or less actual vocals.

To get a more defined vocoder effect with a synth, use a synth pad that sustains as you hold down the key,
and play single note melodies that aren't complicated. Single along with this melody, and you'll get more
vocoder action when dramatically pronouncing your words.

Re: Wave converter doesn't work !!

by dnark

Try the following:

If you are running XP or a similar version:

-> Find the SP conversion program icon (not a
shortcut, the original program icon wherever the
program is stored on your hard drive),
-> right click on it,
-> click on properties,
-> click on compatibility,
-> enter the settings below

> compatibility mode: "Run this program in
compatibility mode for Windows 2000" [you can also try
98, I suppose);
> display settings: disable visual themes

I didn't have the following option, but you may:

> input settings: turn off advanced text services for
> this program

THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE; DEPENDS ON YOUR COMPUTER SETUP.

There's also the possibility that you need to record something (anything, even air) onto one of the pads on your SP Zip disk in order for the program to recognize it in your computer drive. No one knows why later version of the conversion program can't recognize an empty SP Zip disk, so try it and see what happens.

Good luck.

SP-808EX Vocoder.... Teach me, oh wise ones

by

Okay. Good site. I've learned a lot. I upgraded my 808 to the 808EX OS, and I'm not sure I understand how to use the Vocoder features. Any tips, clues, or advice would be very appreciated, and I could start making vocal tracks sound like robo-JLo. Okay... Bad idea... But still, I searched the site and can't effectively use the vocoder. Thanks.

La Mer.

VoCodEr TutoRiAL

by WildStYle

I never thought a would be posting this again.
i made this tutorial a loooong time ago to benifit
folks using the origunal sp-808 with e-mix software.

so once again ....

Vocoder help

there are 4 ways to use the vocoder patch:
1. mic =source, line in= modulator
2. pad=source, pad=modulator
3. mic=source, pad= modulator
4. mic=source, track audio modulator

here are the instructions for each method.

1. mic =source, line in= modulator

- "shift" + "track A effects button" change track A balance to L63.
- "shift" + "track B effects button" change track B balance to R63.

- press "shift" + "track A effects button" change track A balance to R63.
- make sure status is enabled (green light) for track A
- playback track while talking into mic.
Done.

Knobtwister Can you Drop me an e.mail PLEASE ;-).....

by

I accidentally erased my e.mail address book D'oh .
Anyway I've got the AW16G which is fanatstic.
That said I miss my lil' candy raver 808EX and am wanting to get two unit's in excellent condition second hand .
Japan seems like bargain central for these.
Besides which I won't pay duties on second hand goods.
Would consider to EX'd black mantis 808's (even with 100 meg drives if the condition is excellent).
Just can't seem to live without an SP808 in my studio arsenal . I miss the damn thing so much.
Getting an Emu MP-7 preloaded with the new OS2.0 ,beatgarden ,xl-7 ,px-drums and vintage synth roms. Keeping my Micro Q ,Elevata ,DX etc etc but will get rid of the RS7000 when I can get my mitt's on some 808's again.
If you can help me out please let me know.
DEMO work is sort of stagnatting without them.
Silly I know but certain compsitional approcahes ala' musiq concrete etc etc are done with pure class and ease on an 808.
Thanks in advance mate.
Good to see you're still round these parts.
PS: Hi Dnark how's it goin .
Nice too see at least 2 old faithfuls around these parts.

You never know the true value of these babies until you actually part with one . Truly classic bits of kit IMHO and an indespensible compositional tool too boot.

Any one wanna do a trade in OZ for an RS7000 mint condition ,64 meg ram , OS 1.21 ,sm cards and readwriter , all utilites ,disks etc etc give me a holla .

re:system freezing

by

i had the same problem, in my case, it was the disk. i always make a backup of my work (or the stuff i deem worthy enough) because i'm always afraid a zip will start going bonkers on me. in my instance, i put the zip disk in the 808, and it made a clicking noise (click of death) and kept making it. i tried some other disks, and realized it was the disk not the drive (i thought it was the drive at first). i had just backuped the disk a week earlier, so i wasn't too distraught. hope this helps.

Thanx but....

by

Thanx for the info but before I even read this insite I'd already purchased new zips. That did it and now the panic is over, my new delima is finding a reasonbly priced sp op-1.Since the price of the unit itself dropped in half since I purchased, paying more than $125-$150 for the expansion would be crazy.

forum is dead ...

by WildStYle

All the masters have gone or they dont post.
The final blow was the departure of john westwood.
he was this forums life blood.

you could always join the yahoo forum.
its the best sp-808 forum now.

back in the day, the yahoo forum was always two steps behind this one, everything happened here first.

the end of a era.
