tempo...

by shawn cashin

i want to have a tempo change in the middle of a song.. i have samples at 126.6 and then i want to switch to a sample thats at 111.22 but i dont want to stretch it to match.. "cuz it buggers it up to much" so can i use the tempo map? or adjust to fit the slower sample in then go back to the faster sample later.... does this make sense? argghhhhh!
it seems sooo simple i just cant figure it out

Saving?

by

My SP808EX doesný save all parameters automatically like the manual mentions. For example I assign gate-mode to a pad, but the next time it has returned to another. Same for titles of pad banks and other stuff.
What's going on here?

Thanx,

Olav

Factory Sounds ZIP

by

Where would I go to replace this disk? The one with the guy talking on the tutorial, and all of those sounds and phrase samples and such. Also, where would I go about getting new sounds. I have a ZIP drive on my computer, so I am hoping I can just download them and throw them on a disk. All help is appreciated!

Thanks!

sounds

by knobt

hi chris
for a start forget the factory disk, its only there to start u off.nobody makes songs with that stuff, if u do, well i'd recommend the mc303.
yes, you can download sounds from the web, i dunno the mechanics of loading to an internal zip, i just do it via audio cable.
where else to get sounds? the kitchen, old vinyl, a cat and a stick, sounds of nature, factories - bang some things together and record it. run the sounds thru stretch, various fx until you are happy.
the whole beauty of the 808 is that you can make sounds nobody has heard before, you can be original.
forget using presets.
there are plenty of websites with samples and sound fx available, jus do a search for things like, sound fx, samples, sampling.
dont forget the very fine monosynth in the 808, that thing is worth the price alone.

step thing

by green

um, you know how the 808 has the varioius synths in it, and how you can just let them play and mess around with them

theres not a way to put a sample in its place is there, so you can change the various notes and whatever as one sample plays
i thought that might be nice, maybe easier then going thru and manualy changing the pitch to use one sample like a piano

question bout 250 drive

by green

i just put in a 250 drive and i got somequestions about it
its almost seemed slower, but it seems to work fine, i tried a 100 mb disk and it played it (didnt try writing anything to it tho)
then i formated a 250 mb disk it worked ok, i sampled something and it worked, but what about the sampling time, it said 1 hour and 5 minutes in mono
isnt that the same as a 100 mb disk?
shouldnt it be like 2 hours atleast with a 250 mb disk?

my 808 is still just an 808, do i need to upgrade it to an ex for it to say that theres more sampling time?

im hoping just the sampling time will be off and it will acctually let me sample more then an hour but i dont have time to experiment right

Re: question bout 250 drive

by Symplx

Are you sure it's set to mono? A 100 MB disk records 46 minutes mono at 44.1 kHz,
& 64 minutes mono at 32 kHz. A 250 MB disk records 122 minutes mono at 44.1 kHz,
& 169 minutes mono at 32 kHz. A 750 MB disk records 4 hours 27 minutes mono at
44.1 kHz, 6 hours 8 minutes mono at 32 kHz. Have you performed a disk cleanup?
You should up grade to the EX OS for the 'Pad to Track' feature & Vocoder.

hmmm

by green

well i formatted the disk at 32
and i just played around with it somemore, did a quick and standard (standards the same as quick it just does more right?) cleanup, but it still isnt acting like it has alot of time on it
i recorded what it said was about 6 minutes of stuff, so now its down to 59 or so minutes, but it should still have like an hour and however much more like you said
ill try timing with a clock and record over and hour of stuff and see if it just cuts off at 59 minutes or if it keeps going

but unless if it just doesnt undertsnad the time and will acctualy record more then it says it will i dont see where the problem is
all i did was take the old drive out, remove the little thing on the back of the old one, im pretty sure i put it in the same place on the new one, unless if it matters what end is facing out, since the one end looked different from the other
and then i put the new drive in, checked to see if my old 100 mb disk still worked and when it did i then formatted a 250 mb disk, and then saw the time was wrong
i guess ill go experiment, thanks for the help tho

Re: hmmm

I don't think there's anything wrong with the hardware. I think you're
recording in stereo. Press the sampling button. Does it say stereo or mono
at the top of the screen? Time remaining is to the left. Wait, are you sure
that it's a 250 MB disk? Maybe the disk is labeled wrong (from the factory???).
Try putting it in your computer to test it. Try another disk. Let me know.

the disks look different, my 100 mb have like an almost clear but not really little triangle shape on the bottom with littleshapes inside
the same place on the 250 mb disks is all white
thats how it should be right?

i just tried formatting another disk, i just did it at 47 k, and it came back with 23 or so stereo minutes and 40 or so mono

and yes i know before i had it in mono, i checked
im trying to fill up the disk right now,so if its still recording in 20 minutes then ill know its just the times messed up but that i can really just record till the disk is really full

Try hitting it really hard

by Symplx

How does it treat 100 MB disks? Hummm, the only other thing I can think of is
to open up the unit and check the connections. Is the jumper in the right place,
making the drive a Master? Is the drive new? Is it really a 250? Maybe you have
a defective drive. Try putting it in your computer. Does it recognize the drive
and disk as 250 MB? Last option is to call iomega for support. They may know
of a specific problem. When I run across a problem, I assume human error first,
hardware failure last. Start with things you could have done wrong, then move
on to testing the hardware. What do you mean '47 k'? Perplexing......

it likes being blown more

um, isnt it something like 47 or 32 kb or something you can format the disk to, i foget the acctual letters
but i guess i will open it up and check it out
theres no possibility that its a 100 mb drive with a 250 faceplate is there?
would it be able to read the 250 and just think it was a 100 if its only a 100 mb drive?
i thought it wasnt supoosed to be able to, but i was wondering if something like that could happen

it works fine with 100 mb disks, reads and write tyhem, same with 250, but it just wont fill up the 250

I think this is your problem. The SP Classic software doesn't know how to write to a 250, so it's just writing to the 250 as if it were a 100.

I'd be real surprised if you still had this problem after upgrading.

A 250 Zip drive in a 808 classic with the classic OS should work fine.
See: knobt on Dec 21. There may be a glitch, by upgrading you may fix it.
You should upgrade anyway, it's really fun.

I don't doubt that it will work, I'm just wondering whether it will treat the 250 drive as a 100 instead of as a 250. I think you need to EX OS for that.

Symplx - question...

by

Hey there... Glad to see that you got the 750 working... I was all set to call Roland on the 26th and ask. Anyway - I do have one question pertaining to your install - has the larger capacity disks slowed down the sample pad response? (i.e. loading up banks - can you have more than 64 banks now and do they load up as quickly? Do samples load and play as quickly?) I have the EX and am going to buy a 750 if there are no probs... I would like to get in touch with you on the fact that you consider yourself a 'Noise-ician' cuz maybe we could throw back some ideas - I have a setup that even makes my friend Mike Patton envious... Please let me know.

Re: Symplx - question...

by sssyyymmmppplllxxx

If anything, response has speed up. It loads banks quickly.
You can have up to 64 banks, no more (isn't that enough?).
That kind of thing is part of the OS, it's not going to change.
Samples load faster then before. It works perfectly. The only
perceivable obstacle is money. It is the same as a 100 MB
drive except it can hold 750 MB. For some reason, the disk
takes longer to eject. The new drives like to eject the disks
as if they're trying to launch them across the room. For the
record, I'm using a Mac. That shouldn't matter, except I think
people have had problems with drivers on PCs. Yes, I'm a noisy
fellow. I've been making a racket sense the 80's. I used to play
with Big City Orkesstrawww. Been hiding out, but have started
to work again. What kind of ideas? I am interested in tech, but
the final sound is what's important (that and the process).

hot in herrre

by bideford

I was wondering if anyone had a work around concerning audio levels when recording directly throught he mic in with an instrument? In my case I'm using a fender P bass and a Gibson SG, both instruments require me to have their respective pick up volumes set to below 0ne out of a possible 10 in order to avert digital feedback or high gain noise through the headphones. I've tried adjusting the gain on the mic levels and the gain on the phone levels as well as playing around with the master fader but to no avail. is this normal? Will a Direct Box allow me to play with more pick up volume without the distortion or do I simply need to keep the volume pots on my respective guitars set at zero to one?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.....
Thanks

RE :Hot in here ........

Get yourself a Behringer V.amp and go from you mixer's output to the standard stereo inputs and your problems solved.
As for the Saxophone. I'd side chain a compressor/expander/gate to the mixer mix input insert and then record into the 808 itself.
The Mic input seems fine for vocals but I find the mic pre a tad noisy myself and prefer the ones on my Mackie.

Can I Send Effects To Track Outs?

by Lonni

I want to assign a effect to any or all of the track outputs. The lights above the tracks are lit, and I hear the effected sound through the headphone output.
But I hear no effected sound through the track outs.
Here is what I'am trying to do.
TRACK A(output A)- Guitar loop
TRACK B(output B)- Bass drum triggered from external pad
TRACK C(output C)- Snare drum triggered from external pad.
TRACK D(Aux out)- Click track sent to monitor system.
Ideally I would just like tracks B and C effected.
I would like to keep them on seperate tracks cause they are sent to an external mixer where I can control volume and EQ settings on the fly.
Any help or suggestions would be great.

sp-808ex upgrade files

by jxsbebop

I have a lot of questions regarding upgrading

SP-808 OS to EX
can someone give me the ex upgrade files (I'll give an email address to send it to)? I really want to upgrade to EX, but Roland wants to charge me $50 to upgrade.

750 MB ZIP Drive
So the 750 MB Zip drive works for formating QUICK or FULL? Will this drive work w/the WAV converter utility as well?

WAV Converter
Maybe I'm just ignorant, but why is everyone talking about a SCSI zip drive w/this program? Are they meaning to attach it to the 808? or to the computer, if so why not just get an internal IDE 750 MB zip drive.

RE: Disk clean up .

by OSCar{FaX}

I'd suggest doing a quick and standard disk clean.
Then pop the disk into your PC compatible Zip drive and use Norton utilities to perform a disk defragmentation before doing anything else. This will really help extend the life span of any single zip disk you own or use .

Lame beginner question

by Hustler

Hi guys,
Hope this isn't a dumb question but I can't find anything relevant in the manual. I'm trying to record filter sweeps in my tunes, either resampling or when bouncing tracks in song mode. The 808 doen't seem to treat the standard (shift + effects) filter (the one on the bottom row when the secong row led lights)as an actual effect. Am I far wrong as I'm quite new to the machine? Absolutely love it though! Cheers in advance for any advice,

hi green
you want to get the atapi internal zip drive. atapi is the kind of connection used in the 808. they are quite common and cheaper than the external units. i got mine for $120.
you are correct about the 750drive, it can read 100mb disks but cannot write to them.
the lil doohickey options on the back are known as op2 and op1. they offer digital and optical inputs and outputs. people that have them seem very happy.
list price is around $250, but some webstores sometimes offer them for $50,

If you mean physical contact then i had same problem, but you need to strip down the unit, deffinately NOT reccomended if your not too handy with electronics. If you R then youd probably know how to do it and wouldnt be asking.. Roland would probably do it for a fair price otherwise, when it comes to switches there pretty reasonable chaps.

hmm
ive found that blowing at then hitting it works
i just used an air compressor to blow the whole thing off, since that blows harder then i can
havent turned it back on yet to check since for some reason my compresser will blow small amounts of water out occasianally and i got a little on it
not much, and it might of only gotton on the out side, but i think ill let it sit there and for awhile anyway, and let whatever might be there dry

Shit.

by K

Just bought a 250zip. Should have got a 750.
Does the 750 accurately report how long the sample time is, and does it give you accurate count down when the disk is going to run out? Let me know once you've used a full disk. Well done for taking the plunge.

The drive works the same as the original. I haven't recorded a
full disk yet. The time remaining indicator is accurate. I'm about
to order another 750 MB drive for my computer. The converter
program should work. I'll post the results.

Unfortunately a hard drive will not work. If someone is crazy enough, they
could hack the OS. Take the HD control code from the A6 and replace
the Zip control code in the EX OS. I think it's possible. I don't know
enough to do it. Maybe use BBEdit to compare the OSes...

750 MB Zip Installed!!!

by Symplx

Complete success! 2h 13m of stereo recording time, 4h 27m mono.
My only complaints are as follows. Beige is not a color that portrays
the futurist qualities of our beloved machine. The unit is not made
as well as the 100 MB unit that came in the SP-808. It makes a high
pitched whirling sound. I haven't tried the convertor program yet.
That will have to wait untill I acquire another drive for my computer.

IT WORKS!!!!!

Have you formatted disks without any problem? Both quick and full formats?

As for the beige: You realize you can swap out the faceplate from the one that came with the SP, don't you? It's a little tricky but can be done. I've got the instructions saved somewhere around here; I'll have a look.

This is what I found re: switching out the beige for the original black faceplate:

"Did you know you can take the faceplate off the old one and put it on the
new 250? It takes a little inginuity... You also have to switch the clear
'buttons' (actually a really long piece of plastic).. And you have to remove
a piece of metal from the 250's outer shell.. It gets in the way... but in
the end you have the beautiful black faceplate from the original and not
some tan nasty thing."

Faceplate

by Symplx

I tried swapping faceplates when I installed the new drive.
It's a completely different design; holes are in different places,
the door flap is attached to the body not the faceplate, and
folds down not up. I may spray paint the faceplate. Just
have to degrease it with alcohol first.

Formatted Disks

by Symplx

No problems formatting disks, quick and full formats. Doing a full
format takes awhile. I have noticed that 100 MB disks load faster.
However, if the 100 MB disk was originally set to 'pad to track'
it will stay that way. If you try to change it, the pads will not play.
I think this is because the 750 MB drive will not write to 100 MB
disks. That's the price of upgrading.

Re: Formatted Disks

So, if I understand you correctly . . . you've got this 750 thing going. Have you actually used it after formatting?

I guess I'm still surprised it went so simply. Trés cool, no doubt about it.

I can live with not being able to write to 100s, since I haven't used 100s in forever anyway, only 250s.

But a 750: that's a lot of sampling time.

Yes, it works. As of yet everything works fine. The unit is
loud and makes this strange spin up whirl sound when you
turn it on. That's all really. I'm very happy that this works,
as I'm a Noiseician and work with large files. Nothing
shorter then 5 minutes. A few as long as an hour. This is
great for live shows when you need stable equipment. I'm
looking into getting another SP-808. Run them both into
the Xone 62 mixer and my hacked / home made FX.
That sounds about right.

OS compatible????

by bideford

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it necessary to upgrade the OS to the EX, for those who wanted to install a 250 zip in their original 808's? Wouldn't the same apply for an upgrade to the 750 zip? The EX OS was written to format 250 zips, how is it that this same program will format 750's, without a driver upgrade?

If you're looking for a hardware option RS7000 V1.2 IS IT

by OSCar(FaX)

Some threads here lately on the MC and MPC unit's.
Yamaha has given the RS a whole rejigg that'll make you think twice.
Proper grid record ,w/note scanning in step from 1/8 to 1/128th resolution including triplet devisions and full monitor of all tracks with full transport from grid , to step to play modes without stopping. Full bar fast forward and rewind modes in this set up with pattern bar lock etc etc.
Note Scanning ala MC - series.
Grid works like a non stop power house 909 on steroids on all tracks now with above mentioned grid resolutions. You can temporarily disengage the record functions and commit later passages done in overdub or replace modes too .
All sections available from front panel.
A huge system tweek that maximises frequency response and a total of 18 FILTERS yep 18 with analog modeled filters ,dual filter configurations with sweepable cut-offs and distance feature for each filter type, parallel filters and the efx sound enhanced too.
This unit now sounds anything from brutal to digital cold to lush and operates like a dream. Has full recycle sample slicing features and over 200 remix templates that mangle audio and midi data in REALTIME.
If you're looking for an ideal SP808/EX companion the new software revised RS7000 V1.2 maybe just what you're looking for. Between the two I'm in absolute compositional heaven .
Filters are taken from the A5000 series and S90 so they are up too EX/EX7 standard sonically. Makes all the waveforms sound rather oooooh errrr ahhhhh .
Definately worth checking out now and something to not sneeze at with full AMP/Filter/Pitch ADSR's LFO's 3 effects blocks ,mastering effects (4 band multi-compressor + eq etc), 64 meg sampler great drum roms, the basses really thump with the new filters too.
So if your on the hunt check out a V 1.2 RS7000 quite seriously before taking the plunge with an MC-909 or MPC2000. It's da bomb shit I tell ya .
Sound dead cool with the 808EX and it's effects too.
Just thought I'd let ya's all know as the new OS was released yesterday and I'm way impressed.

FX to op-1 Track outputs?

Re: Re: bigger is better...

i chatted with a technician at iomega on their support webpage.
as steve said, the man didn't say it would not work,
he said the 750 drive has exactly the same mechanisms as the 250.it plays 250disks as per usual, but only reads 100disks.
so, at the very worst, i expect a 750 drive would at least work with 250 disks, at best...hmm?
someones gotta try it.
i'm saving up for a dvd-burner at the mo, so it won't be me for a while.

Yes my thoughts on the subject, if it AT LEAST works as a 250 then ill by the 750 as maybe some sped advantage,do loosen those bloody 'drive busys'...
Also i wonder what would happen if i use a pre-formated 750? That would that i could happily live with!!! If it works of course!

So without a little bit of support from someone else i may try it... and post my dissapointing results (;

Live Bassist - Considering SP-808 for performances

by

Howdy all,
I am looking into get a SP-808 to bring on stage w/ a live band to add some sonic textures and rhythms. I was wondering if it would be possible to sample myself playing a bassline while the SP-808 plays a rhythm track in real time (this will be done live) so it can be looped along with whatever else the SP-808 is playing?

thanks,

Re: Live Bassist - Considering SP-808 for performances

by generic

Live sampling with the 808 can be done, but with great difficulty. It's easy to actually sample your bass line, but in order to loop it, you have to stop to edit the sample. As far as I know, there is no automatic "cut and loop" function that can be performed while tracks are being played back on the 808.

However, it does have an excellent effects processor with some inspiring delay options. Instead of actually recording the bass line, you could play the phrase just once with the delay. Then you can set it up to loop that phrase into any tempo you choose. With the feedback turned all the way up, it will loop indeffinitely until it's turned down again.

Another possibility is prerecording the bass loops you want to use. You can then use a trigger to start and stop the loops when you want. Or, you could sequence your parts and play along with the 808, but this is hard for a band to do. The drummer has to be able to lock onto the 808's metronome and play with very little tempo flux. Or else...disaster.

Good luck.

Re: Re: Live Bassist - Considering SP-808 for performances

The looping via infinite delay option sounds like an interesting and viable option. Can a footswitch be used to punch in or activate the delay? What else can the footswitch be used to control? I am trying to stay away from any pre-sampling basslines as that is only a notch or two more interesting than kareoke (spelling) to me. Well... I think I will take the plunge and try out the 808. Thanks again for your input. If anyone else has any experience using the SP-808 in a setting with live instruments or any tips, please let me know.

cheers,
erik

Yeah, the footswitch will turn the effects on and off. You can also set it up to play samples or start/stop the 808.

Roland rat - The steam room

by steve - In the Steam Room

This really bugs me, i feel roland has scammed me again- if only they chose a proper HD - u simply cannot use a zip as a hard drive which is exactly what they tried to do - One solution would be if they had buffered it in in say 128 hard ram - i wouldnt have minded paying an extra 30pounds for some ram thrown in. Also this 0.3 second timming for record pad realy screws up your performance playing - i want to record pads how i heat them! is that to much to ask for in this hi tech world? I get drive busy error on both step and audio record with only two tracks!
Its a great unit in terms of AD/da and fx but as a phrase sequencer its lame as they come. the whole point of keeping in midi/digital is to maintain the edit portions - if i need to keep bouncing its like going back to my analogue days. Isnt that 1 reason we loop? instead of using 6 minutes of track!? and to keep editable portions! Remember the Partial reserve scam on the synths anyone? 16 part muti timbral but can only pay 3 or 4 otherwise loosing 50 percent of sound quality due to the polyphony..

cheers for now.

Re: Roland rat - The steam room

by K

Yup I agree. I love the shit out of my 808ex for quick and easy sampling of heaps of instruments, looping, and adding fx, but its about as useful as a kick to the scrotum when it comes to editing (unless your doing the simplest of simple simple stuff). I guess this was the way it was designed, but it claims to be able to do things alot more smoothly than it actually can. 'Drive too busy' shows up far too much for the £850 price tag it carried when it was first released. Don't regret owning one at all, but reckon it was a touch overpriced. Why won't roland release the source code for it? Would that allow some clever boffin to make it write to hard drives? If its discontinued, then what's the problem?

I've been in the dogpatch too.:)

by John Westwood

As Bill 'The Dick' Clinton would say "Steve... I feel your pain." First off SMF player, what are you using? I'm spoilt by a MDF2 and EX5 to go piping my MIDI shit around. Are you using a PC player, or keyboard/sequencer device?

But on the optimistic side, yes you can use the vocoder as you'd hope. A bit of getting used too, but I think there's some 'pros' here that can help you through it.

As for 750's, it'd be nice. But then I'd have to ditch my external SCSI 250 megger to my laptop, and score a 750 external USB. Already went through that with my 100 meggers, inside and out.
