not a replyby bragethe manual, as far as i know, cannot be downloaded (i.e. unavailable on the net). however, roland will sell you one if you contact them. last, but definately not least, i would like to know how you proceeded to do the upgrade. i tried doing the upgrade by computer, using the upgrade on the roland site.the instruction told me to turn on the 808 while holding down the pad trig and effects buttons . the display should then read "awaiting midi" or something similar. but nothing happened, except for the usual "please insert zip disc" message. can you help me out ? any info is greatly appreciated. peace. brage. from IP address 80.202.172.223 |

Hard drive on sp808 come on guys lets do it!!by steve againSurely its possible, slide out the zip in with the IDE a few error messages a few transistors and resistors thrown into place a hey presto ive blown up my 808's mainboard, cool! No, but surely where theres a will theres a way. anyone tried plugin one in? what are the erros, detected or not? from IP address 212.20.121.86 |
don"t go there steve LOL :Pby OSCar{FaX}Ummm old and very ancient topic for us veterans. Two things to say 1) YOUR DREAMING 2) NO NO NO NO NO Take our word for it and give up the ghost before U go ISANE Your Uncle OSCar has spoken from IP address 203.51.137.142 |
Re: don"t go there steve LOL :Pby KI'm a technological novice but I reckon that if your a smart cookie it must be possible. After all, Its an object which operates on logical principles. The only thing I'd worry about is that there might be a change of OS needed in order to write to the HD properly. Obviously Roland made the shitty greedy decision to make it only work with scsi Zip drives, but I doubt they spent years making it an unbreakable system. My heart says go for it (strangley enough, as its not my machine thats on the operating table!) however, from what more technically minded people seem to say, its a big risk. Try and assess just how pissed off youd be if you wrecked the machine in the attempt. Either that or just make sure you can return it to its original state. You're a brave man and you deserve a medal for pioneering research in the world of 808ex's. May the force be with you. from IP address 130.209.6.42 |
OS and Zip Disksby OSCar(FaX)This dates back to ALONG TIME ago when people like Jas looked into this whole issue OK Basically the 808 code is not OpenSource AT ALL Roland sure as hell won't release it either . If you wan't to find out what language it was coded in ,rewrite the entire OS and code it to work with large capacity HardDrives and also implement a proper defrag routine ala Norton etc by all means go and nock yourself out ...... No ones stopping you. But don't blame us if you screw up the 808 whilst reburning the Eproms or the code you write is too buggy (possibility). It's the one upgrade Roland SHOULD HAVE given us before discontinuing 808/EX support. So we didn't find ourselves with redundant media in a few more years too come. Better stock up on those Zip disks I'd say John and Co. can fill you in in better detail . I'm sure they all remember the discussions well too. from IP address 203.51.137.142 |

Hard drive atached to sp808 - dont tell me no!!! pleaseby steveIt must be possible surely, ive got my soldering iron ready and a bag of resistors! Is it an IDE interface? has anyone actualy tried? what is the error? Also ive got problems with lower 8 leds on sample pads, its releated to the 2 connectors to the PCB anyone know the pin asignments for these 2 connectors? cheers for any info/insight? ps the LED's are OK. from IP address 212.20.121.86 |
sp808 to sp808ex upgrade: HELP NEEDED !!!!!bythe other day i was gonna upgrade my sp to the ex via computer. the instructions on the roland site said to make all the right connections, which i did , checked, then double-checked. and then came the problem: further instructions told me to hold down the pad trig and effects button under the d-beam while turning on the 808. the display should then read "receiving midi".i did as instructed, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. the 808 simply asked me to insert a zip, like it always does. i did the same procedure a couple of times, then gave up. SO:what am i to do ?? i really want to do the upgrade, but the instructions seem to be aimed towards 808ex-users? i dont know. please please PLEASE, help if you can. thanx in advance to those who might answer. brage. from IP address 80.202.172.223 |

808 for Trade or SalebyHi Everyone, I am putting my 808 up for trade. I am especially interested in finding an Access virus B rack, or any nord rack, waldorf, etc.. from that era. It comes with 8 zip disks, and maybe a Korg Electribe EA-1. Let me know through push_pause@yahoo.com. Thank you Steve Jones from IP address 65.93.65.209 |
808 sample converterbythis sample-converter software just won't function... it doesn't show a drive at all. how can I get samples into the sp 808 ex? would be very thankful for help! Early from IP address 217.232.47.207 |
ASPI.DLLby John WestwoodGet your self to www.adaptec.com and look for the latest ASPI.dll driver download (something like 4.79 now?) Install that on your PC, and it should better detect your Zip drive and/or 808 software. Good Luck! from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
ho ho ho aspi.dllby kamarosmell like christmas... from IP address 80.15.137.137 |
aspi.dllby Earlyhi, thank you for your help. i couldn't find the aspi.dll, i could only find "winaspi32.dll" or something like that. do i need the "aspi.dll" only? that stupip software won't find my disc-drive letters at all... i have downloaded all kinds of different aspi.dll's to see if one workes, but no... maybe you have a better idea... thank you very much, early from IP address 217.232.54.21 |
Are you XP by chance?by John WestwoodThe 808 Convert Software is kinda strange I admit. When I first got my Win2k Laptop, it worked like a charm on it. Then I installed ASIO, and other software, and the 808 Convert stopped working? In trying to get my WaveLab SCSI to work, a bud suggested the ASPI.DLL (search for 4.72a I think?). It did wonders for my WaveLab, and on a lark I tried the 808 Convertor too, and it worked fine again! So obviously I'm not a 'PC guru' for you Early, and I've heard many conflicts and different configuring issues for XP users already. Best I can advise is to have another search around Adaptec/download/drivers and hopefully more ASPI news turns up for you? from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
Re: Are you XP by chance?by Anonymousthat file is definitely there, i saw your post and went directly there and downloaded it, they make you read some agreement and then after you agree to it they take you to the download page and thats all there is to it. early when you go to the site you need to first go to support then scsi and then scroll down the page to find it, I think its 4.71 or 4.72a thanks for the info westwood. from IP address 24.126.0.9 |
I tried...by Earlythank you guys for helping. i have downloaded the 472a2 version. i didn't work though. i'm working with windows 98se. o.k. the question is... do I have to have some sort of scsi device??? I did see in the system overview some scsi stuff... I don't understand why stupids made it so difficult to get some little machine to work. I have been checking the internet for days now, well... thank you very much, I will try some more! greetings early from IP address 217.232.24.229 |
Yes, you're going to.by John WestwoodI'm not sure if I understand now? You are using a SCSI Zip drive hooked up to your PC, aren't you? If not, you're going to need one! Then from there, you pop the Zip disk out from 808 and put into SCSI'd Zip drive connected to PC. Then all should work well I hope? What procedure are you using now to attempt this? from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
no, it's a USB zipby Early...see that's my problem... I'm using a USB ZIP. I'm getting a paralell zip now. Is it gonna work only with scsi? I hope not... Thank you for helping! Early from IP address 217.232.54.113 |
protools and sp808 midi?byhey guys im trying to set my sp808 up to work with protools 5.2 via midi. i can get pro tools to activate pads but i cant get the sp808 to send notes to protools new to this hope someone can help. from IP address 211.28.96.68 |
808 MIDI/Protoolsby genericWhat version of the 808 do you have? If you have the "classic" 808, you can't send MIDI note messages. If you have the 808EX upgrade, all you need to do is set the appropriate MIDI transmit channel in the "set MIDI parameters" area. from IP address 131.230.30.31 |
best software?by knobti can't remember how many years my pooter and my 808 have sat together in the same room. ive decided its time they got it on and bought an edirol usb midi connection today. so if i connect the 2, and perhaps an optical audio connection too, what can i do and more importantly what is the best software to use? thanks. from IP address 165.76.17.3 |
Here's my top 3 for ya!by John Westwood#1 - WaveLab, or Sound Forge, or Awave. Sure the 808's cool at sampling. But the mastering features of WaveLab put the 808 to shame. Make an all out CD off your best 808 tracks and burn it proffesionally. Excellent for beefing up samples where the 808 just can't make it. #2 - Orion Platinum. Where the SP-808 is the sampler, Orion's the studio. I've been using this for awhile now, at it just keeps getting better! Great onboard beat boxes, samplers, synths, VSTi's, DXi's, ReWire - this stuff is like super sweet. Check it out... http://www.synapse-audio.com/index.php #3 - For more additional software insight, freebies, and news, I can't reccommend this site highly enough. So tres cool it hurts! Chew on that for awhile my man! from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
thanxby knobtcheers john, i'm downloading a demo version now. try before you buy! watchout i may be be asking for some help getting these two beasts to uuh touch. again thankyou! from IP address 165.76.17.3 |
also wondering about Roland vs. Korgby drewBasically I have no allegience to any brand. I just want the best machine to help me start making beats that is a good value and easy to learn thanks again from IP address 128.255.106.102 |
should I take the leap of faith?by DrewI am really interested in creating beats from samples that I hear, but I have no experience outside of a few attempts to splice stuff on frootyloops on my buddy's computer. From what I have heard, the Roland sp-808 and sp-808ex are supposed to be some of the best stuff out there. Can anyone give me a run-down on what these are capable of? What is the difference between sp-808 and sp-808ex? Do I really need the d-beam function? is it useful? Are these types of machines better than computer-based programs? Why? What is the sound quality like of recordings? Are they hard to use? Should I start off using a simpler model? I don't want to have to upgrade right away? where is the best place to get them? I know there are a lot of questions, but if anyone just wants to answer one or two it would help me out a lot... thanks from IP address 128.255.106.102 |
look before you leap...by genericIt really depends and what kind of music you want to make. I suggest you do a lot of research first. Take a look at the Akai MPC 2000. To most people, that's considered THE best sampler/sequencer. But, the MPC is relatively limited in memory, and they're almost 3 times as expensive as an 808. You could, however, find a decent used MPC 2000 for $600-$800 (they may even be less know, I'm unsure). One of the greatest features of the 808 is the 16 step effects processor. It includes a number of virtual synths and nasty effects which can by sequenced into 16 steps. Simply put, the possibilities, I believe, are endless... You get tons of memory for pretty cheap, even without upgrading to a 250MB zip drive or EX operating system. If you have a "classic" 808 (not 808EX), you have the option of installing a 250MB drive. This gives you and hour of 44.1khz sampling/recording time. Usually, classic users upgrade the zip drive (about $100) in conjuction with the 808EX OS. What's your budget? If your trying to save $, buy a used 808 and get the 808EX upgrade. You can either download the EX upgrade or buy it from Roland for $29, (which includes the 808EX users manual). In my opinion, the D-beam is a cheap gimmick to capitalize on the electronic instrument explosion. If you want to be a "cool DJ" and flail your apedages about triggering samples and effects to get the girls' attention, the D-beam is for you. If not, you can turn the D-beam off, and simply be amazed by the little blinking red lights. The sound quality is excellent, but you have to know what you're doing when it comes to actually taking samples. If your not familiar with the interface of samplers or digital recording equipment in general, it may take you awhile to get the hang of it. Or, it may come naturally to you. Go to a Guitar Center, MARS Music, or other instrument wharehouse and play around on display machines for about 8 hours. That'll help you decide what you want. Also, there's a ton of good info about the 808 on the Web. Just start digging around on this site, and you'll find quite a large community of people who have very handy information. Good luck... from IP address 131.230.180.138 |
Bang+Buck = SP-808.: )by John WestwoodIf you're just starting out, or a seasoned pro - you can't go wrong with a SP-808. If you know enough on how to sample beats on fruity loops, the 808's not too much worse. Plus, you get some way cool effects, mix capabilites, awesome built in 'virtual synth', vocoder, step modulator (do some trancy grooves with this and/or use it to control an effect knob or two?) and D-Beam. D-Beam's pretty funky for playing a 'theramin', abusing effects, or what I commonly do - slam my hand down on it while a sample plays to get that 'record stop' pitch effect. The only drawback with D-Beam and Vari-Pitch is there's no RAM in a 808. So you'd have to slam your hand on the D-Beam while recording to a DAT or PC and sample it back into the 808. But if you're just 'starting out', I can't think of a better box for your creative future than the SP-808. The majority of us here probably only use half the features on a daily basis, so don't feel bad if every song you do doesn't utilise everything. from IP address 204.187.104.220 |

BUT I DID THAT ONCE WI MA AKAIUSB16 PADS(NOTEVEN USE IT N E MORE) SO WAHT IS BEST COMBINATION WI SP..? from IP address 24.171.137.37 |
I want one too!by John WestwoodYeah, the MachineDrum is freakin sweet! But it's like a glorified 909 in a way, kinda limited to just doing minimal techno beat sequencing - but it's PHAT! It can either be driven by the 808 no prob's, but don't think it sends MTC to drive the 808 that way? (no biggie really). But if you want to blow some dough on some wack featured PHAT ass help for your 808, I'd strongly advise Korg's new 'MicroSynth'. Dang thing's like a mini MS-20 - minikeyboard, vocoder, analog modeling, you name it. The things a Casio RapMan on steroids! But perfect for any occasion, with or without the 808. www.korg.com/microsynth from IP address 204.187.104.220 |

Screen light getting bad?by John WestwoodI'm getting worried now that my trusty SP808's 'Classic' display is starting to fail? I'm using optical, and have noticed if Khz differences from my laptop aren't 44.1, that can really mess up the screen. However, recently my screen has been flickering and/or fading, and all settings have been standard. I finally lightly tapped the screen, and it came back to a sturdy bright shine. It stayed that way for a day or two, then started flickering again. A few taps, and it's back. It's temporary fix, but one of these days I'm going to have to take this beast in for a new screen. I hope Rolands doesn't let me down and/or rape me for $250.00 for a new LCD display? from IP address 204.187.104.220 |

'Classic' display problemby symplxJohn, it seems to me to be a connection problem. Try opening up the unit to see if maybe a cable is lose, or a bad solder joint. Just a thought. Don't blame me if your toy gets hurt with you poking around in there. from IP address 207.214.223.101 |
Re: Screen light getting bad?by AnonymousIs there an internal battery in the SP which maybe needs replaced? My roland XP80 needs a battery for running the basic ins and outs of the machine, but I've had it for about 7 years now and never needed to replace it. This could solve your prob. from IP address 130.209.6.42 |
Thanks!by John WestwoodYes, I might have to open it up soon - and hopefully it is just a little battery or something? Just took my SY77 keyboard in because it's 'backlight' faded to nothing. What an ordeal, and came home with it still 'in the dark. Characters are fine, just no light in behind to read them. My service guy told me that most LCD displays have a projected longevity of 2500 hours. I have my trusty 808 on say 3hrs a night, 300 nights a year for the past 3 years (has it been THAT long?) = 2700 hours. Guess my guy is right! Hopefully Roland is as smart? (God knows Yamaha isn't!) from IP address 204.187.104.220 |

Thanks again!by John WestwoodGood to know. But it's the 'backlight' - the displays fine. But if I ever venture again, I'll definately advise 'get Kurzweil on the blower'. My 808 is really getting funky now - in a bad way. Is it possible to 'over use' a Zip disk? from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
Yamaha SY77 BacklightbyHello, I just ordered a backlight for my SY77 (the old old doesn't light up). I replaced the old one with the new one (after several hours of work!). quantizationby freshmexI was just wondering, does the sp808ex have a quantization feature for like drum tracks, or does it have a resolution so that you can only play sixteenth notes, or niether? from IP address 12.25.179.246 |
hum humby kamarothe sp808 have two features: a MIDI like sequencer that must have a 96 PPQN resolution and can be quantized on real time record MODE. but you can record by audio your drum loops, and in that case, there isn't any restriction of resolution. from IP address 217.128.73.179 |
MPC2000+sp808ex what can i do?by RanCIDmilki m thinking of getting mpc2000 soon... i knoe it's killer combi (sp+mpc) but what can i do with these to mosters combine... i m new to midi so plz lemme know what 's the possibility... or is ther any other good combination i can use wi sp? from IP address 24.171.137.37 |
ISby The Answerwell lets see for starters you could use the mpc for beats, drumkits and audio snippets plus sequencing. use the sp for loops and sequence your loops and other audio with the mpc's sequencer, finally use your sp as an efx box for itself and the mpc, and extra finally use your sp as a digital multitrack recorder. record your vocals bass, guiatar mixdown to a stereo track and then use the wav converter to convert them to wav files in your computer and then burn a cd. so sync up the mpc's midi-out to the sp-808s midi in that way you can start and stop the machines at the same time. you'll play your beats on the mpc and your more organic sounds+vocals on the sp-808. when you are done building your song you will record your mpc sequences to a track on the 808 and mix that track with your 808 tracks. from IP address 24.126.0.9 |
Can The Sp-808 Sync Its EFX to BPMby Super Chunkif so how good does it work?, are there any special things one should know about doing this, or tips. thanks from IP address 24.126.0.9 |
But of course..by KBut of course it does my good man, and it does it with more style than an italian tailor. Set your song BPM, then go into 'shift FX info' (or assign the parameter to a twistable knob...which it may already be by default). Once your setting is 'bpm sync' you can then choose loads of different styles. For example, if its a simple delay effect you want synced, you then choose if its to the crotchet, quaver, dotted minims, triplets, etc etc etc. then play around with levels and delay time to get some funked up fx. It does this with perfect precision, and I'm delighted with this feauture. Makes my dull talentless beats sound carefully programmed! from IP address 130.209.6.43 |
In search of a case for the SP 808 - please advisebyHello, I would like to buy a carrying case for my boyfriend's SP 808 (for holiday present). I've searched on-line everywhere I can think of, but the only true case that seems to fit the 808 (Groove Bag II) has been discontinued. Has anyone found a reasonable carrying case that won't cost a fortune? I have the dimensions and I've been searching laptop cases, messenger bags, etc., on-line, but I am just not sure. Despite the fact that I've found a few bags as possible fits, they don't allow for the knobs and buttons on the console and I'm worried that they will get hurt during transport. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated (even home-made solutions! I am handy and try to be creative). Thanks so much for your help! DD from IP address 209.191.168.43 |
genericby knobtmy local music shop has a selection of hard cases that have not been designed for any particular machine, i just chose the one, $40, that came closest to the sp808's dimensions, took it home and cut up some foam rubber cushioning to make it all snug. i attached the foamrubber with velcro so it is easily removable and i can use the case for other toys as the need arises. your b/friend is a lucky guy. this is probably your cheapest option. i'm sure some other users here can tell you some companies that make sp808 specific cases. from IP address 165.76.17.3 |
Anvil Cases?by John WestwoodKinda like what Knobs mentioned, but these are the creme de la creme of cases. Buying him a custom case like this would definately lead to marriage I think? Take a gander, and have a Brinks truck in your purse. www.anvilcases.com from IP address 204.187.104.220 |

750meg zip driveby dandercoreHas anyone tried to add a new 750 meg zip drive to an 808 yet? I doubt if it will work, but I gotta know!!! from IP address 67.248.197.81 |
Maybe?by John WestwoodI've seen a Internal 750MB ATAPI Zip at a Apple dealer, so they do exist. But no external SCSI versions are coming out I believe. So, I think I'm just going to stick to 250's for now so I can still get the good of my .WAV Convertor. But it's dang tempting! from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
compatible?by knobtfrom iomega's homepage - "Iomega's new Zip 750MB drive is also backwards compatible with Zip 250MB disks (read and write) and 100MB disks (read only)". also they mention the atapi vers is rrp at $150. looks good to me. from IP address 165.76.17.3 |
Format?by dnarkIsn't the problem that the SP software (even the EX) doesn't know how to format a 750? from IP address 67.33.115.248 |
Re: Format?by AnonymousSounds like a perfectly valid stumbling block to me. I can't see roland rat bringing out a new os to cater for it either. from IP address 130.209.6.43 |
HEY mr. WESTWOOD!! or anyone else....byi just made a small discovery (you probably already know this): the filter can be a synth.ressonance: 100% creates self-oscillation,i.e. sound.cut-off filter decides tone, 1 semi-tone changes per step when you control the cut off with the jog-wheel in the fx-edit window.the sound is totally clean, and at a high pitch its perfect for those classic west-coast-rap synth melodies often heard from dr.dre and the like back in the day.so what i wanna know is the following: is it possible to control the sp808s cut-off filter via the keys of a MIDI keyboard ? thanks in advance to all who might answer.peace. brage. evil rules the world. be unruly. from IP address 80.202.172.223 |
MIDI controlby genericThis won't help you a whole lot, but theoretically, you should be able to control the cut off via MIDI system exclusive messages. If you have a manual for the 808, cross reference the 808 MIDI implementation chart with the MIDI implementation chart of the control synth. For what it's worth, I've discovered the same trick, but controlling it has been a bit touchy. With the resonance all the way up, you can make notes with the 16 step sequencer, but often it gets too squelchy for a guy that does most of his monitoring through headphones. Let us know if you learn anything on this. I've often wondered if I can control the steps in the sequencer with an external MIDI signal. That way, instead of 16 steps, you could have a hundred steps or more...this would make for some unbelievable metamophosing. But, MIDI implementation charts can be tedious, and I haven't had the patience to see if it's possible. Good luck. from IP address 131.230.180.95 |
