For the true Roland fan....by John WestwoodCame across this little link for Roland Wallpaper - and they even have the SP-808EX in a 'spacey' (no, not Kevin) picture. http://www.roland.co.uk/GR10/wallpaper/wallpaper.htm from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
750 zips?by KAnyone tried fitting a 750zip to an EX? Success? Failure? Do they even make SCSI ones yet? from IP address 130.209.6.43 |
We shoulda begga Iomega?by John WestwoodLooked in on them, and they might not be for us? So far, it's only USB drives. Secondly, they won't accept 100MB disks. Third, probably Roland has a 250MB 'ceiling' on the 808's that would need a savvy hack to overide if a internal SCSI/IDE ever did come available? Or unless this 'new' MC-909 sports a 750MB drive? Imagine the sampling time on that thing? But I think it's only Flash Card and/or RAM ala the RS7000? from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
Mixing Down your tracks to make it sound professionalby CronI can't seem to get my vocals to blend in with the beat on my 808 e-mix....Something always sounds wrong...Whats the best way to mix it together to sound good??? Effects on vocals? Mix down techniques??? Sound Levels ??? etc......I need some good advice on this since I'm still waiting on my manual from Roland.... I just want my stuff to sound professional, but its been hard with no instructions so far... Please help! Thanks from IP address 198.81.26.208 |
Vocals are tricky...by John WestwoodEspecially on the 808. This is an actual singer, and not sample snippets, right? Many will say 'compression' for starts, which the 808 has in its FX section. Compression will bring a voice or instrument to a 'balanced' median, if used properly. The whisper portions are brought up, and the screaming portions are brought down, theorhetically. My fave is 'fader riding', now known as 'automated mixing'. Again, the 808 is capable of this also. Basically, you push the faders up to a pleasent level, and pull them down right before you start screaming (bare with me on the examples. For now, and if you're fresh to the 808 - here's the quickest way for results... If you're vocals on Trk A, hold down SHIFT and press the green buttons above trk B, C, D so they're off. Then press MARK, and you should see trk A go black. Hold MARK down and press CLIPBOARD, it'll light red now. Press Clipboard, and you should hear your vocals come back. Hold down Clipboard and press a blank sample pad. Now your vocals are on that pad. Press SAMPLE/BANK button at top of unit, and scroll down menu till you see NORMALISE, and enter. Select the Pad # where you've put your vocals, enter another Pad # that's free for process to go and enter. May take awhile to process, depending on length of track? When done, press new pad that's red now, and voila! Vocals much louder, right? To get them back to SONG, simply hold SHIFT + STEP (the stop button on the player controls?), select TRK A, Measure 1 (Or cue up to wherever the vocals came in originally?) and enter. You'll see a note in the upper right of screen - rotate dial till it says SAMPLE, and hit the Pad with the 'normalised' vocal track - done! This is a pretty basic way to explain it, and you may have your vocals out of time when you replace them. There are ways to fix this, but for now I'll say this - Say NO to Save Current Song when you go to eject Zip disk and power down. This way, you'll keep your 'original Trk A' recording AND the improved Sample Pads as well. You can turn MUTE Trk A next time (just hit the green button so it's off), and practice triggering the pad to get your vocals back in on time. But soon as you get the manual, and this great forum - you're going to be deadly I bet! from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
Ok Thanksby AnonymousYeah I'm seriously thinking of getting an Akai DPS16 MultiTrack still for my recording solutions and a new Mic, I was saving up for it .....then I kept hearing all these good things about the 808ex, about how you can complete whole projects on it and how the 4 track recording sounds so great....I couldn't resist so I just said fudge it and I snagged one on ebay for $650...I'm happy with one thing str8 outta the box was the 61 minutes in Stereo sampling....Damn I was sample happy for like a week straight then came recording and its been like a bad marriage since I hit shift + record.....Damn its shitty without a manual, and the 808 has virtually no support on the roland site besides a turbo start guide...which sucks.....So far you guys here have been Awesome. Thanks John and I'll try out what you said. from IP address 198.81.26.208 |
Equalizerby Cronhow does the equalizer work....how do you move the knobs on that thing? from IP address 198.81.26.208 |
umm - please clarify...byAre you asking about [SHIFT]-[EFFECTS] (SEL/EQ/FX) screens? Or The Filter/Isolator knobs above the pads? from IP address 24.160.155.27 |
Highlight and rotate dial.by John WestwoodIf it's the fader section. SHIFT+FX Button above desired track fader. Use arrow keys to scroll and highlight up and down the page. Highlight MID as example, and rotate dial to change gain. Arrow left and rotate will change shelf amount. EXIT and SAVE when finished song. Good luck. from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
Where can i download Sp808ex OS(ZIP) no midi?byI need to update my OS, but I canīt do this trough Midi, so I need to do this from the ZIP disk Thanks Mario from IP address 200.61.163.137 |
from another 808by knobti don't think you can download what you want off the net.(?) find an 808ex and copy the os onto a zip disk, then load it into your 808. if the guys at your local shop are friendly ask them to let you have 2 minutes alone with their 808ex demo machine. if not friendly, do it sneakily, i did it was more fun! if they bust you, just say you wanted to try out one of your disks to see if it works on the updated os. the full info on copying and uploading should be in the hints & tips section. from IP address 165.76.17.3 |
c1-c6by junglelist uk 1993 n' lickcan i control c1-c6 parameters with my oxygen 8 controller so i don't have to switch between the two banks. from IP address 62.255.64.6 |
OSCAR-FAXby Anonymouswhen you do step pasting on the 808 are you doing audio or event step pasting of samples. please advise, thanks from IP address 24.126.0.9 |
Always step event recording .....by OSCar(FaX)It's far more precise but takes getting used too. Say you have a snare sample that falls on the 1st 1/4 beat of bars two and 3 then flams at 64ths over the fourth bar , set event record to Step and Single . This will then write the entire bar as one whole sample Heres another trick .... Sample a long ambient drone then use the Pitchshifter or DJ Vocal effect and set up an external sequencer on the effects control midi-channel ... Program a note sequence on your sequncer. Trigger the pad and play the sequence. hey presto , the pad will pitch shift too the incoming midi note data. This does truly insane things too drum loops, vocals, drones etc etc etc... also using the Vsynth as a filter bank you can step mod the LFO and filter cuttoff and ring mod the input (pad) against OSC1 of the Vsynth and sequnce the notes from an external sequencer for some brutal robotic rythm workouts and other bizzare effects (great using the BandPass filter at 12 db with a touch of resonance) You can warp out really dry/bland loops in a very IDM-ish kind of way. Oh and the guy in the previus post said you cant cut loops into segments on an 808 for D'n'Bass and Jungle workouts. Bullshit you can't either that or I have a different brand of 808 to his (go figure) ?????? from IP address 203.51.138.53 |
tell meby junglelist uk 1993 n' licku obviously have more patience than me with loops i admit u can do almost anything with loops on this baby if u have the time or u know something i dont. tell me. u seem to know yo shit tell me how u can make the 808 a worth while effects box in discless mode with the problems i addressed earlyer in mind from IP address 62.253.64.8 |
effects box in diskless mode.....by OSCar(FaX)What I do is have a swag of edited effects on an old 100meg zip (min is an EX) so I prefer 250 meg Zip use for audio. I connect a KAOSS pad from the AUX outs too the Kaoss Padd and from the Kaoss Pad too the Aux Inputs. Set the SP808 too Send and Return on line input Many of the 808's effects respond too incoming midi data and the Six Knobs (ie 3 controllers banks A+B) all handle midi CC's. So I can step sequence very long CC's passages at any note resolution on my RS7000 (down too 128th note steps for both Note and CC data). This means I can all sorts of weird modulations happening from just using the 808 effects under midi control. The Ringmods can have motion sequnced pitch and melodic sequencers chucked at them. The pitch shifting effects actually track midi note data as well. I have some custom 808 Ringmod patches where the input signal from Pad or Line is ring modulated against a detuned PWM waveform this intern is crossmoded with a TRI wavwform. The step sequnce (ie 808's step mod) is set too a gate time of LINK , portamento is turned on and S&H LFO locked at 1/8 note triplets modulates the filter with a heavy filter attack , positive envelope with lots of release. The step mode runs in parrallel modulating PW and Crossmodulation of the Two waves. The delay is set to dotted crotched tempo sync with Delay send , Feed Back , Cut-off Resonance ,Filter Attack and Amp release or controlled via RS7000 step sequencing. I usually use a BPFilter set at 12db per octave slope. This can be mixed with the Kaoss Pad decimator effect and I'll feed my ER-1 through it. Sample it into my RS7000 doing a slice+seq job and then make re-cycled beats in a IDM styling with it. This is just one example of what can be done. Try vocoding drum loops against industrial grind core noises anything goes really. I find it quite invaluable. Also on the edit /step record event windo in the 808 you can easily cut out 1/4 note intervals assign them too pads ,copy them and then slice 8th's or 16th's out of them and reasemble in the step edit event screen. Etc etc etc.... I've had my 808 for a long time and work with it more than anything else. the Vsynth is a corker and very versatile when experimented with , good noise/effects generator, get some huge sub basses out of it and nice snarly D'nB bass line when feed through the KAOSS pad too. Nice 70's prog rock arps etc etc etc..... Most of the effects need heaps of tweeaking and a reassignment of controller knobs and step mod data too be of real intrigue. But I guarantee you it's all there at your finger tips .You've just got too roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. If you want I could give you my e.mail addy and you could send me say a bog standard 2 bar loop and I could do some manipulations (as audio examples for you) Just send me a .WAV file and I'll show you what can be done Let me know if your interested and I'll send you my e.mail details. from IP address 203.51.138.53 |
cheersby junglelist uk 1993 n' lickthanks for that, ill get back to you on the email ting. i can't get to a computer alot and have borrowed a lap top for now. i've tryed some of yo suggestions like the taking out quater notes etc but cant get rid of the clicking. thats why i had taken to programing loops and remixing them. hopefully you can show me different. ive made some basic blines with the syth but i get clicking between notes when i play it through my oxygen 8 keyboard controller. ive taken to playing guitar riffs, pitching them down too much, reversing them and you get a lofi sounding bass line that sounds tight. i then layer variations of the riff and do the same process and mix them together and get a fat old school d&bass line that way. i'm down to my 1210's a gemini umx 9 and my ex and controller at the moment so i do what ican but some of yo tips have been helpfull thanks. i'm gonna have to sell some of my tunes me thinks, some of that old skool stuff is worth loads now, iwas offerd Ģ40 for liviticuses 'burial' the other day. ill have to weigh up the odds thanks again from IP address 62.255.64.6 |
and another thingbycan any body stop that clicking on the ex, ive trimmed my loops proper, that function that cuts loops short on selected tracks to stop this is pants. i meen i shouldnt be getting popping on drum loops especially as ive programed them in for hours on the dam thing, i find it happends alot when you copy off track to pad via clipboard. they loop perfect on pads but when you put them to track even as a single phrase they still click, anyway how many bars can you put together with out forgetting where you are ina single phrase. am i just s@$t or is this aproblem. i dont want a software option i need this ex as its portable for dj sets. Otherwise i love my ex who needs 2.4 children and all that when you gotloops an understanding girlfriend and breakbeats. anyhelp welcome, oh year if you like hardhouse, trance that you think is trance but is hardhouse (no diss to all you proper trance heads out there)or are a candy raver that dances to a sound that sounds like old uk happy hardcore, believe me i did the white glove thing in 1992 (what a muppet one family doesnt come from listening to that rubbish)... i hate you respect to anybody who likes music with soul, funk, emotion (thank you detroit techno)and melody what ever it may be. from IP address 62.255.64.6 |
808ex and1210sbyhow do you stop the effects increasing volume in diskless mode as you cant set level how doyou stop effects clicking and coming in late like delays etc or is that not possible in discless. In disk mode you can moniter a sample but not bring it into the mix without restarting it, if for example you are sending to headphones by pressing shift key. iwant to be able to check a sample in my dj sets before dropping it without having to make sure i drop it in to the master sound exactly on time as i dont have send & return on my dj mixer. any other tips on the uses of the 808ex and live dj sets welcome. going out to any of the old skool junglist who watched this still forward thinking genra emerge out of the uk underground, 1993 uk rinse it now badboy can any body mix Roni sizes 'timestretch' i still have a job after all these years from IP address 62.255.64.6 |
Advice on Sequencerby JoshI am totally sold on the SP808. I am also impressed with the depth of knowledge about the instrument on this site. What I am picturing for a studio right now is an SP808, obviously, working with a hardware sequencer. I am torn thought over the direction I should take and I am intersted in some opinions from people. I am looking at the MPC60 or 2000, but not XL, it's just too expensive. I am also looking at the XL-7 from EMU. Finally, I am still open to using a roland MC but I know its specs just aren't up to par with EMU and the roland gear does not have the sequencing rep of Akai. I want a capable fluid sequencer for hip hop based dance music. Stuff ranging from Ming&FS to J5 to P.U.T.S. I also like standard dnb like Bukem etc. I want to assemble beats and loops. If I get an MPC I will get a Roland D2 as a cheap soundsource. 505 soundset for under $200 great deal! If I get the Emu I will have to eventually get a sampler like an SU10 or SU200, an MS-1, or even a S900 for drums for making beats. I know its long winded. Thank you in advance for any advice or further questions. from IP address 141.157.176.11 |
dont go there for d&bassbythe 808 aint the one for d&bass sampling you need to be able to reform the breaks your way and you cant waveform edit on the 808 scrub is as near as you get which can be helpfull for top and tailing samples. go software or with a decent rackmount and a keyboard thats all you need to make decent d&bass. anyway ltj bukem, standard, the man who pioneered the chilled side of jungle. standard is all that techy hardstep rubbish that spoilt the scene. bring back the ragger stuff. If iwere you get an mpc or a rackmount if you like ya hiphop too, but your gonna miss the 808s wicked effects from IP address 62.255.64.6 |
The RS7000 is a formiddable beast with the SP808EX.....by OSCar{FaX}I'm just about too sell off my ER-1 / ES-1 /RY-30 and TG33 and get an AW16G DAW and just use my 808EX ,RS7000 (both fully optioned) a TC Fireworx ,Ensoniq DP4 my Mackie an EPS16+n and some analog filter units and that's it. Often over looked but the sampler is uber crisp and does re-cycle chops like a jungle demon on amphetamine from IP address 203.51.138.53 |
OSCar{FaX}by Tha_ChronThanks for the tips man....I was able to add effects to different tracks and combine them....good shit But how do you cue up the recording/event window to cut out parts and effect them separately like you said before? I have all the steps down except how to cue up the event window. Thanks Again homie Tha Chron from IP address 172.193.33.19 |
A regular SP808 and OP-2? Will they work?by jayHey Guys, Can I put an OP-2 on my regular SP808 (not ex)? Where do I get an OP-2? For a decent price. I want to do it so I've got a pair of XLR inputs. Is this thing adding gear to pull it off or just patching in new plugs? thanks, jay from IP address 216.123.155.66 |

Just got a SP-808EX off a friend, help plzby rushni just borrowed this of a mate, and hes never realy used it, and i dont have a manaul (yes i know i need to get one) but until then the zip disk that came with it is curupted, and wont load, i cant do anything at all with it with out a zip can i ? if so how? and if not can i just buy any zip 250 and throw it in or do i need files on the zip that came with it? thanks for any help. . . muchly apreciated from IP address 203.109.249.133 |
Cool! : )by John WestwoodIf it's the 'demo' Zip, it's got some cool loops on it you might like? But, if it's corrupted - try the DISK FORMAT in the menu of SYSTEM/Utility (top middle button). Hopefully that will give you a fresh Zip to use, but you will loose all the 'demo' stuff in the process (not that they would be any good corrupt either?) The 'sampling aspect' is pretty straight foward on the 808, and laid out pretty logically I think? But from there, YOU WILL NEED THE MANUAL! It gets pretty heady, and there's alot of SHIFT+ button combinations in the 808 and routings just to lengthy to explain here. It's a top notch underated box - but like a Porsche, you need to know how to drive it first. from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
thanks :)by rushnyeah i bought a new zip today. . . not thinking about formating the old one haha, stupid ehh ive got stuff playing through it now, but, i dont know if its my sound card or a connection someware, the distortion is SOOO bad ive got a vibra 128 and i know its shit. . . but :P ne more thoughts on what i should get or how to fix this would be greatly apreciated thanks from IP address 203.109.249.131 |
Hhhhmmmm?by John WestwoodYeah, Roland really sucks for 'online' help guides. There's some 'turbo guides' at their US site in 'support' I think? Be this is kinda very general compared to the manual. Then they also want you to buy their 808 tutorial video for $15-20 bucks. It's very good, and you'd think Rolands would put in a coupon for it in every new 808 box. Someone like yourself to get a used 808, Roland charge you $5-$10 for it and 'bite the bullett' in hopes you'll quickly learn how to use it and become a HUGE HIT and mention Roland in a Keyboard mag interview... 'I couldn't have made it if it wasn't for the great gear and help of Rolands!' It'd save alot of additional advertising expense's for them? As for computer stuff, I'm new to it myself. But don't think it should distort that bad? My best suggestion is to go 'optical' as soon as you can. I use a Yamaha UW500 to my laptop, and the optical to my 808 - the sound is AMAZING! from IP address 204.187.104.220 |
uhuhby rushnyeah thanks alot. . . i think i might go optical soon :p ive got no idea what it is that i need. . . i guess ill figure it out soon enough seems o so complicated but yeah a upgrade to my sound card cant hurt. . . and im prety sureits the wires thats creating the statik, i might buy some new ones and try that from IP address 203.109.249.133 |

sp808 abilitesby JoshI must admit one thing that does intrigue me is whether or not the new mc might not have the recording/sampling/loop construction abilites of the SP808 but on flash memory cards instead of zip disks. re:Verbby Tha_Chronre:Verb thanks dogg, I was able to figure out the correct recording steps but I've ran into another problem....Ok now I want to record my vocals with an effect...then my drum track with another effect. I have them on tracks A & B, but It will only use one effect for everything...How do you change that and can you resample the whole track with the effect you want? from IP address 172.191.174.181 |
Do this ......by OSCar{FaX}As a rule of thumb for modulation effects etc always sample with the effect IE: lo-fi /phasers etc etc. But since you haven't do this. Select the track you wan toeffect first IE: Drum track. Make sure the track staus is set too AMBER (ie:Bounce) . Configure the effect in send/return or insert record one is a wet/dry mix the other 100% wet. Open the sample window and set sample start to the > (play) symbol) cue up the recording/event widow and hit play. The track will now sample to a pad with the appropriate effect. Normalise and trime it and then go back and repaste it where the original drum track was. Do the same with a seperate effect for vocals. So now you'll have 2 tracks with seperate effects and the ability to use a third effect IE: Reverb etc as a send and return on all tracks or any combination of those as you so choose. I tend too sample with effects , slice trim, resample with other effects etc so I can paste multiple variations into one track and then apply a global effects mix via the internal effect and an aux. effect send and return as well .Which is a fairly flexible way too work .... Hope that helps some. from IP address 203.51.130.202 |
don't forget the cut :Pby OSCar{FaX}Also you cat go into any track in the event window and use cut so say you had several words in your sample you want to extract ... Go to that locator point hit shit and CUT then the end of that snippet and repeat. Then MARK ON that section and hit clipboard and voila the sample is assigned to a pad you could then say tempo flange that section using resampling with INSERT RECORD and paste the effected snippet right back in where it came from. Great for insane pitch effects of appplying the vocoder to only certain words or ring moding and adding delay to the tail end of a break or whatever you want. The taking bits out, effecting them (specifically a delay or echo) and reinserting them amongst the non effected material. Awesome ! Thanks... breV:er from IP address 65.213.225.142 |
Disk Full. No it's not!byI know, this one's been asked and answered a few times already but it never concerned me, and after an hour of searching I'm asking (please!) for a replay... When trying to convert samples to wav files on my PC with the converter program I get a "Disk Full." message. It seems that I can add waves to the zip, but getting the samples on the zip converted to waves isn't working. I can see which pads contain samples. The PC disk is not full. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get the samples to my computer as WAV's? THANKS, Cris cris@11n.org www.11n.org from IP address 80.116.136.166 |

Ooops! Try ADAPTEC for ASPI.dllby John WestwoodYes, right you are! There I was blaming Rolands for not being Win2k/XP compatible, and it was my SCSI link running without ASPI.dll? (I used to have it working, but I think some software kicked it out?) Anyhoo Cris, hope this helps you and your system out and can get your 808 .WAV Convertor working again. www.adaptec.com and get the latest ASPI drivers! normalizeby monsoonsmanhey hey.. do we have a normalize type thingy??? i thought i read about one earlier and then last night i was looking for it to no avail... going crazy? from IP address 144.212.95.125 |
It's in there...by re:VerbI'm not in front of my 808 now (and I do alot, just knowing it's face, not reading it). So, I believe that the "normalize" function is in one of the top 3 buttons in the middle section (song, system, pads buttons). I think it's in the left one (the song button). If you scroll down in that menu, you should find it. re:Verb from IP address 65.213.225.142 |
nope slightly wrong info .......by OSCar(FaX)It's actually the the top right Sample/Bank button. Job 7. Normalize along with timestretch, changepitch, reverse, delete, divide, bank copy and erase functions etc etc etc etc..... Once you've trimmed and looped your sample the button should light up immediately afterwoulds and the menu screen should display itself anyway mmmmkay from IP address 203.51.132.198 |
