Considering buying a SP808. Need a couple of q's answered.. :-)

by Angel Quake

Hi

I'm looking to buy an 808 for live use. I already use an RS7000 for the bulk of my work, but there are a couple of issues with it that maybe the 808 can cover.

1. If I sample something from the RS7000 live, how hard and fast is it to get that sample playing as a loop in time with it?

2. If I'm playing the RS7k sequencer at 130bpm and I knock it up to 135bpm, will the loops playing on the 808 follow suite?

Basically, if it can sort of fulfill those requirements, I will get it. If not, well, I guess it will have to be a Red Sound C-Loops or something.

Thanks

rs7000&808

by knobt

hi
i have no experience of the rs7000.
but i will try to answer your questions
1 - you can set the 808 to auto-trim, so any silent parts at the start and finish of a sample are edited out.
you can then trim up the sample manually to the desired bpm or use the stretch function to set your desired speed.
and hope you don't get a click on the loop point, doesn't always happen but it can - easy enough to edit out.
the stretch function takes doesn't take too long, naturally it depends on the length of your sample.
once you know the machine you can work very quickly.
i imagine there are better dj tools more suited to sampling on the fly.

2 - afaik, you can set the 808s midi clock to slave and change the bpm from other devices. ive never done this as my 808 is always the boss. the manual indicates it's ok tho.

anybody tried it?

i just got my hands on an rs7000...

as per your questions...sampling the rs7000's (or anything for that matter) output while playing live...i assume you'll need like a minute or more (depending on how fast you are) to get your sample out of the 808 playing in sync. you have to hit "sample start" on the sp-808, so depending on your sound source, the auto trim might work, but if there's no dead space, you'll have to hope and hit the button at the right time. you can hit "mute" on the sp-808 while you trim the sample to kill the output and check w/ headphones whether you've got everything right.

as per the sp-808 slaving its pad loops to midi...according to the "tips and tricks manual" on the yahoo group page, the sp-808 can't do this. the pads will play at whatever bpm they've been set at, regardless of the incoming MTC. for more info, search "tips and tricks" at the yahoo users group.

Cheers

MIDI connection Fails

by

Hi there.........
I'm trying to connect my Sp-808 to a Yamaha DTXpress Drum Module........ so I can play some samples trough my drum pads.
I've connected them with a MIDI cable.........MIDI OUT of DTX Module to MIDI IN of the black box.........and nothing happened........ I've changed some settings...and nothing......I happend to have a Yamaha Synth....... and as I was bored trying to trigger some samples from the Sp-808 having no result at all........I started toying with my Synth.......so I played some sounds of the Synth with my Pads......I ¡ve connected MIDI Out of Drum Module to MIDI in of Synth....after a while I added anothrt MIDI cable from MIDI Trough of the Synth to MIDI IN of SAMPLER..........and.......it worked....... I don¡t know what a hell happened.....but it worked..........
My question is.........does anybody experienced something like this?? If yes or not........does anybody knows how to eliminate the Synth from this chain, beacause its pretty anoying to carry a Synth just to use the MIDI Trough connection tp perform live...........
Thanx in advance.

Hmmmmm.

by John Westwood

Not to familiar with the DTX, but by all means it should work just as you had set up. The only thing is the SP-808 defaults to note C1 on it's pad bank, and possibly your DTX is on note C3 as a 'bass key' so to speak. Try and shift your pad banks up and around (refer to manual) to C3 and see if your DTX will trigger the pads that way then? Very strange problem indeed. Keep us posted.

maybe?

by

Since the SH-32 has it's own "sort of keyboard", maybe the midi parameters has a switch for REMOTE keyboard ON,OFF. My JX-305 has this and when I switch it to ON, the 808 pads will trigger the arpeggiator. When the switch is OFF, the notes will play, but the arpeggiator does not play back.

Check all the midi paramters for something like a REMOTE KEYBOARD switch.

sh32

by knobt

hi shawn
yep, i still have my sunsongs.
also have a sh32, tho its been stuffed behind my couch for the last year or so.

did u go thru 'system' - button5 'clock' - choose midi (looks like an upside-down capital 'U' followed by 'id'.
roland script - should be std. on all pooters.
also if the 808 clock is not running or sending, the sh32 won't make a sound.

cheers

The Knobs and Robots

by John Westwood

Heya Shawn - weren't you going by the handle ROBOT on the Sun Songs? I've still got mine too, or did they get behind Knobtwisters couch with his SH-32 as well?

But Sir Knobs is right - make sure your SH-32 is set to EXTERNAL Clock if you can? Or set SP-808 to EXTERNAL in Set Song Parameters and go that way?

Still out in Van Land?

Good to see you spinning!

by Steven West

A good box to have if you're into DJ stuff is a Yamaha SU10. Gotta be like $50 used? But you can run audio through it - CD, Turntable, tape deck - anything! And scratch it in realtime using the SU10 Ribbon. You can also do pretty wild filter effects and other stuff. As a sampler - it kinda bites compared to the trusty 808's. But as a little mucker box, it's got some narly features to it to this day! (Don't even think the SU200 can do this - and it only has MIDI IN as well.)

Take care bro. Jam the noise, and make the sound!

Upgrading 100mb zip drive to 250mb zip drive for non-ex

Has anyone upgraded their sp808(first version) from the 100mb zip drive to the 250mb zip drive? My 808 won't spit out the zip disk anymore and I'm wanting to replace it with the 250mb zip drive but manual says nothing about it....any information or suggestions would be exremely helpful and appreciated. straightforward

by knobt

go for it, easy job, took me 20 minutes. ive updated two classics, the first i updated the zipdrive before the OS, it worked fine.
somewhere around is a step by step guide on how to do it.
just do a search.
main points are get an 'atapi' 250mb drive (iomega seem very good) and set the jumper to the correct postion on the back of the zip case (use the old 100mb drive as a guide).
you don't need any special tools, other than a phillips head screwdriver and a beer or 3.

swapping drives instructions

by dnark

CHANGING OUT THE 100MB ZIP DRIVE FOR A 250MB ZIP DRIVE ON THE SP-808

FIRST READ THE SECTIONS IN ALL-CAPS TO FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE PROCEDURES YOU WILL BE PERFORMING AND WHAT ORDER YOU WILL BE PERFORMING THEM.

Only use an internal IDE/ATAPI Zip drive in the SP808.

Obviously: Disconnect the power supply and all other cables from the SP. Observe the usual precautions about electrostatic etc.

As you disassemble the SP, keep the screws in three separate piles as you remove them. Prepare places beforehand for all three sets so you don't lose them or get them mixed up.

Turn the SP over and rest it on something soft and pliable, like several towels, so that the knobs on the panel are not subject to unnecessary pressure.

(1) REMOVE ALL THE SCREWS IN THIS ORDER:

(A) REMOVING THE SP'S BOTTOM PLATE:

Remove the 13 screws on the bottom of the SP. Do not remove the two screws in recessed holes at the top; these can stay put. Don't forget the interior screw just above the middle rubber foot at the bottom. Note that not all holes have screws in them (at least on my unit).

Lift off the bottom plate; it should slip off easily. Put it aside in a position allowing you to remember which way it fits.

(B) REMOVING THE ZIP-DRIVE HOUSING/FRAME FROM THE INSIDE OF THE SP:

[I found it easier to remove the power cable and ribbon cable from the old Zip drive itself if I first removed the screws holding the Zip-drive housing/frame to the inside of the SP; it's just easier to get a grip on the cables.]

Remove the 5 screws attaching the drive housing/frame to the inside of the SP (2 on the right, 3 on the left; the screw on the upper left is a little hard to get to if you don't have small fingers. When you've removed these screws, the housing/frame still won't come out all the way because the cables are still attached to the Zip drive inside it.

(C) REMOVING THE ZIP DRIVE ITSELF FROM THE DRIVE HOUSING/FRAME:

The Zip drive itself is attached to the drive housing/frame with 4 screws, all on the top of the housing. Remove these screws and put them aside. The Zip drive will now be loose, but because it still has its two cables attached, you can't lift the Zip drive all the way out.

(2) REMOVE THE TWO CABLES CONNECTING THE OLD 100 DRIVE WITH THE SP INNARDS:

(A) THE POWER CABLE

(You will want to reattach it to the 250 drive the same way it was attached to the 100, so leave it in a position that makes that easy to remember.)

(B) THE RIBBON CONNECTOR

(Same as above, though the fit inside the SP is so tight, this connector will remain pretty much in the same position.)

(3) REMOVE THE OLD 100 DRIVE FROM THE DRIVE HOUSING.

**********************************************************************

(4) SETTING THE 250 DRIVE TO MASTER

Put the two drives side-by-side for comparison and install the jumper/shunt into the 250 drive to set it to Master just the way it is already installed in the 100 drive. The drive comes from the factory set to slave.

On the back of the Zip drive, between the ribbon-cable port and the power-cable port, there are three rows of two pins each.
If the Zip drive is lying on its back, the power-cable port will be on your left, and the ribbon-cable port will be on your right. The three rows of two pins each will be between those two ports.

You'll see that the first row of two pins on the left is covered by a little jumper/shunt. This jumper should have come with your 250 Zip IDE drive (mine came in a little ziplock plastic bag).

If you're unsure, you can hold the jumper/shunt up to the one on the back of the 100 drive you just removed to see how it will fit onto the two left-hand pins on the back of the 250.

Slip it onto the two left-hand pins on the back of the 250 to cover them. Press firmly till it is seated. This sets the Zip drive to Master. The backs of the two drives should now look the same.

**********************************************************************

Now the whole process is exactly reversed:

(5) SLIP THE NEW 250 DRIVE INTO THE DRIVE HOUSING/FRAME WITH THE CABLE PORTS TO THE BACK.

(6) RECONNECT THE TWO CABLES TO CONNECT THE NEW 250 DRIVE WITH THE SP INNARDS (a bit easier in the following order):

(a) the ribbon connector
(b) the power cable

(7) SCREW ALL THE SCREWS BACK IN (IN THIS ORDER):

(a) TO SECURE THE ZIP DRIVE ITSELF TO THE DRIVE HOUSING (4 screws on the top of the housing)
(b) TO SECURE THE ZIP DRIVE HOUSING TO THE INSIDE OF THE SP (5 screws on the bottom, 3 on the left, 2 on the right)
(c) TO SECURE THE SP'S BOTTOM PLATE BACK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SP (13 screws; the one with the washer goes at the top left)

Hell yea..!

by

i got one and yo,at frist i was kinda if'y about it ....but i need the extra space since my needs were turning into on demand samples, for on stage apps.so i looked up a computer repair shop refered to me from the local music shop...it took two trys to get the right zip to work but, it worked..but..1.it didnt play any of the old zips before the new drive.2.IMPORTANT:for best best results download the sp-808ex update!!3.if u followed 1 and 2..u should be good!i got so much space now it's sick!i run my ry30 through it and still have enough space for longer samples, new effects(mic and in line effects!),and the space to track it all.so in all,u bet your ass it's worth it.

hello and important question

by kamaro

first of all i finally keep my beloved 808...i love it so much...so i can't make the step to sell it..

this week a guy in a french forum tell me that roland modify the zip drive in the sp808 to make it faster...and he says that internal atapi drive doesn't work on his machine...

the difference between me and him is that he bought a legal 250 EX upgrade at roland france...

he says that he must directly change the card on the zip drive and take the one on the 250 drive sell with his upgrade, someone can clarify that?

hmm...

Sounds suspicious to me.

I'm not sure how Roland could have "modified" a zip drive. Many 808 users have upgraded their 100mb to 250mb (and some have added the zip 750). I have not heard of one being any faster than the other.

If you have the original black 808, you should have the same performance with the EX operating system and the 250 zip.

i am totally agree with you

by kamaro

but i prefer talk to you about this issue...the guy is totally sure about couldn't using a classic zip drive...

he says that when he bought a iomega drive he just couldn't using it..drive too busy and other...
but when he bought a 250 zip drive at roland, he says that they wasn't the same (the card on it) and he have no problem after...

i am using a classic internal iomega 250 zip drive and have no problem (just that zip medias isn't really reliable...) and make the jump for friends without any problem...

roland france have sold him drive for 410 € !!!!!!!!

he make the changing of card beetween the two drives himself, and make me read the email from roland...

others...

by

Others have had problems with different zip disks as well. I don't use the wav converter software anymore (which is where some of the problems are showing up I think. I've also never had a disk go bad on me, but admittedly I've been easy on the machine - no live gigs, no slamming disks in and out between sets, etc. (I'm crossing my fingers now that I said that)

Hard to imagine that Roland would be able to provide something "better" than Iomega? Maybe the physical features of Iomegas have changed as time goes on, but compatibility has always been pretty stable.

I'm waiting to see about this IDE zip compatible card I've been hearing about.

Good you're still aboard Kam!

by John Westwood

Shouldn't be ANY difference for Zip drives Kamaro. Most of the power differences between North America, Europe, Asia, etc. are dealt with at the 'Wall Wart' part where you plug it in. Roland's SP-808 has either a different step down transformer inside export models - but I think it's more a tiny switch in there to change 110v to 220v. And all that would be needed then is a different power cable to plug in the back of your SP-808 to the wall. But an ATAPI Zip drive will always get the same connection AND power supply inside each and every SP-808.

I think Roland was using a Panasonic Zip Drive when I gutted it from my old brown bomber for a 250MB. Worked fine, but was only 100MB

BTW - Are you french Kamaro? I always thought you were Asian for some reason? But good to know you're not going away now.

No more NIN concerts! :)

by John Westwood

Man! 7 buttons off? I thought the 808's were pretty tough - you must be playing yours with a sledgehammer?

Just got my screen fixed - stupid little cable slid out of the socket inside. However, Roland has made the 808's really 'unservicable' should you even take it to a shop. Took mine down after looking what I'd have to go through opening her up. It took my service guy an HOUR to take everything apart just to get at the back of the screen. 5 seconds to press the cable back in, and a HOUR to put Humpty back together again. And at $40 and hour...

So 7 Buttons to fix? Might as well score a second hand 808EX me thinks?

From John's post...

by

Track to pad - Highlight track with MARK (or track portion?) Hold down MARK, and press CLIP BOARD - voila!

Now press and hold clipboard, and press an empty pad.

It only copies phrases as far as I can tell. In other words, I don't see a way to copy to the clipboard using the region in/out markers.

You got it Kenny!

by John Westwood

It would be nice to just 'region' it like you say, but no go.
If it's say a beat or something with 'dead air' between measures, I would scrub back till I heard the last ticks sound, mark, exit out and 'region' that small portion to the next measure (3-4ppq's or ticks) SHIFT+ERASE that little piece. Then scroll back just before the begining of the measure you want to snag and perform the same operation. Now you can MARK+CLIP BOARD that chunk over to a pad.

I recently "EXed" my old SP808, I swapped the 100 for a 250 and the machine booted no problem & straight away I had more recording time but had to update the OS for the extra features (DUH).

You should have no probs swapping drives.

Oh, by the way, if you see my old mate Heath in Mt.Wellington say G'day for me!

The 808 is up and running...

by

It's been gathering dust thanks to ProTools. I pulled it out and set it up again. I had forgotten just how cool this thing really is.

I'm an old man now, but back when I was tracking on 4 track cassette, I would have killed to pull out an 808! All those effects and digital editing - incredible - although by today's standards it's falling behind.

It's all about the music though, not the gear. So I'm gonna throw down some new 808 tunes and get the juices flowing again.

Woo Hoo!

P.S. I've been playing with the step modulator - it just has this cool factor - no keyboard, just good old step sequencing.

peace

The MV looks like a sweet box - should take you to a new level. I've been debating myself cuz I haven't used the 808 since I got ProTools. I'm hangin on though - I haven't had any zip problems yet - I still have the original 100mb.

Good luck to you!

I could never part with my 808 bro, but a DJ70 MkII I had no problems letting go - so I know how you kinda feel. But a MV8000 - NICE!

Just 'cause you don't have a 808 anymore doesn't mean you can't visit once and again. You're the dude that knows how to shuffle, and must share the secrets with all now before you go!

A-6 Users

by

Hi Music Lovers, I'm the proud owner of an A-6 Video Canvas and would like to find others who use the same machine. I've got the quick start guide, but don't have the regular owners manual. Let's discuss the A-6 and share our knowledge. If anyone knows where to obtain a manual/guide please post the info. Would an 808 manual be of use to utilize the recorder? I've got the OP-1 installed, but don't know how to access its functions. The recording quality is excellant on the A-6. If we work together, all us A-6ers will benefit. All the Best, Buck

A-6 Users

by Buck

Hi Knobt,
I do original music, and bought the A-6 on ebay for a song (pun). There may be a few manuals available and I'll let the needy know if they come into my hands. It would be great if that happens. A couple of weeks ago I used the machine to record a fiddle player to create an instructional CD. The sound was far better than expected.
My stuff ranges from blues to ballad, rockabilly to love songs, with novelty/comedy songs in the mix. I've not gotten very good sounds until the digital revolution. You can do just about anything now in the digital realm. I use MIDI and Audio to make waves and mp3s. The A-6 is the most incredible gizmo I've ever encountered. Once I get some concrete info on how to use it, I'll be able to create demos that are not just bags of noise. Do you also possess an A-6, and what kind of music are you into ? Buck

noiz

by knobt

hi Buck
no A6 here, just two 808s. interestingly, roland produced a japanese labelled A6, but never did the same for the 808.
i used to see a few A6's in akihabara's used instrument stores, the only english on them was 'roland'. they were cheap, about $100 each. haven't seen any for a few years now.
my music? hmm...one review, from the sunsongs days, said it would be a good soundtrack for a s&m movie...
these days i build my own analog synths and play overly long, self indulgent pieces on them.
mostly i use the 808's as hard disk recorders - one has OP1 and a 750mb zip drive, so it is perfect for the task. i probably should upgrade, just waiting for the right toy (and price).
if you wanna see some pix - http://home.att.ne.jp/grape/knobtwister/pinky/

how to deal with drive busy

by

when creating your tracks make sure to set it to "single"and not "multi" when dropping in phrases into the multi track. also i have learned the selecting copying and pasting the phrases instead of just dropping them in one after the other cuts out on the drive access.
basically what is happening is: when you record you phrases using multi it acesses the zip every time the phrase is repeated. when you use single it actually prints the phrase into the track so it is a continous acess. freeing the drive up to do real time sample triggering. also when you bounce tracks down make sure to erase the previous tracks. this will cut down on drive access as well. even if you dont select the track it is still reading it if information is present on the track.
i used to hate the drive busy error too. until i sat down and read the manual. it has helped me out a lot. hope it helps you too.

working with the footswitch

by

Hey Guys,

I'm using an 808 in a dance/rock band and I'm trying to make a foot switch for it so I can have my hands free to play guitar, etc. My question is, is there any way to do multiple footswitching or how does the machine know what sample to cue when switched. I was thinking about trying to turn a dance dance revolution pad into a big footswtich if possible. I haven't hooked anything up to it yet to send a signal and I thought I might check and see if anyone on here has experienced anything similar.

Beware of 'Reverse Polarity'

by John Westwood

Not sure of a 'multiple board'? Could be possible if the pedal board can transmit MIDI Note values, and how you set up your pads (IE: Press the pedal so the pad 'sustains', press the pedal again to 'stop' the loop - or another pad as a 'one shot', just press another pedal, and the pad plays a long sustained sample and stops when finished) Not familiar myself with 'pedal boards'.

But beware that Roland uses a reversed polarity on it's footswitch to that of Yamaha and every other maker I think. So if you even have a 'sustain pedal' - it may 'sustain' until you press the pedal, and then it will stop and start again when you release the pedal. Not right!

PLEASE HELP "Poor Haydo" upgrade his SP-808 Classic to SP-808EX!

by

Greetings all!

Some of you may not know Poor Haydo so I'd like to introduce myself...

I am Poor Haydo, nice to meet you!

I am having trouble loading the EX OS on to my 808.
I even downloaded the SMF player from rolandus after trying Cakewalk, alas 'twas a failure.

It's like the signal is "trying" to be received as the "PAD" LED blinks faintly when I play the MIDI files but the LCD still displays "Waiting MIDI..." instead of "Receiving x/8".

I loaded the V1.05 (or whatever) OS for the classic to be sure the setup was correct and it worked OK...

Don't tell me that the fish bums at Roland brought out that OS upgrade to prevent upgrading to the EX OS!
If so I would not be surprised >

PLEASE HELP ME - I WANNA FEEL THE LOVE!!

need copy of ex os

by

i can relate! i am having the same problem. i already bought a 250zip and am ready to go - just need the ex os. i installed the regular os via midi, but it seems like the ex version is blocked. guess i really need a zip disk with the ex os. any idea where i can get one - or some kind of zip image i can burn if i buy a usb zip for my mac or pc?

by the way, for future reference to other people who may have the same problem: i was on a mac trying to upload the midi files. quicktime player didn't work. so i found a shareware program for mac os x called Qmidi that did the job great. i set the input to hardware DAC and put the output to port A, where i had a midisport 2x2 box installed with the midi cable from it going to my sp-808.

Help! a zip disc copy would be greatly appreciated. i'll pay for the costs of creation, mailing, and effort.

thanks!

Malfunktion of Resonance/High Knob ? zip 750 or 250 ?

by

I have the black SP-808 at home , will probably buy it ...but ..

..What can be wrong with the high/resonance knob (the one to the right) is acting weird , it moves from zero to abaout 15% and jumps directly to 100% , can it be the OS (ver.1.0) or is it the potentiometer ? or something worse ? please can someone help me with this , I have checked it in diagnostic mode also , whoever I like it , and the guy want to sell it for abaut 400EURO , although I think I like it too much , but I have to change internal zipdrive , 100 is bad , is 750 or 250 to recommend ? Iomega or IBM ?

dodgy pot and 250

by knobt

i couldn't tell you if it is the pot or system...but pot would be more likely. assuming its a regular pot it would be easy to replace, just getting to it would be the main task.
otherwise all fx parameters are assignable to whichever pots you wish (or the d-beam), so if you can live with just 2 pots, it is easy to work around the dodgy one.

i have two 808s, one with 750 drive, one with 250.
the 750 is fine for use as a hard disk recorder, but it is not so good for processing samples, lots of extended waiting. ive had no probs, but others tried it and quickly switched back to the 250.
so, you are probably better off with the 250 drive, it operates as well as the 100 but with more memory.
imho - iomega is best, for drives and disks.

i dunno european prices but 400euros seems quite high. here in japan, used classics on 100mb go for US$150.

750MB Zip drive upgrade?

by Haydo

Sorry dude, not sure about your res. prob. but your question about the 750MB drive is a good one.

Is it possible to install a 750MB Zip drive into the SP-808/EX?

I would have thought it wouldn't be a problem as the 250MB drive was welcomed with open arms by my 808 when I replaced the 100MB prior to upgrading the OS.

Anyone actually tried it?

WOW, just imagine... it would only take a couple of days to copy a 750MB disk using the internal drive >

250 disks in 750 drive ?

by

Yes , I think you are right that it is the pot , I did order a new one .. waiting for it , Sample processing takes longer time with 750 ? But if I use an 250 Zip-disk in the 750 drive , is it the same as having a 250 drive then? , It would give me the option to choose..I guess .
