German armour was usually primed in "oxide red" primer, so you can use that or some sort of iron/dark steel color. So far, the best paint I've found to resemble the primer is Polly Scale's "special oxide red" (#414354 - 1 FL oz bottle) in their Model Railroad Colors line.
