things like WD-40, sewing machine oil, vaseline Can and will melt or soften plastic and can dissolve or discolor model paint. It is a common problem with petroleum based products on certain plastics or finishes.

There are safe lubricants, also, like powdered graphite, powdered teflon, etc.
