The only way I've ever seen anyone try this in 1/35 scale was to use cotton balls painted with the differenct colors of blacks, browns, yellows and orange. As i recall, some of the cotton balls were stretched/pulled apart to get different densities. The balls were all "centered" on a clear piece of stryene that was pushed down the barrel.
