I may have to try that.

Some years back, I had to simulate cannon fire from a muzzle loader for a US Civil War dio I was helping my son with. It was 1/86 scale and I used cotton balls pulled apart. Looked good for that scale, but I've never tried it with 1/35. Your idea seems promising.
