Disturbing fact about Tamiya Putty

Hello folks,

i just heard this from a friend experince using the new tamiya putty (the old one with the orange cap)..most of us use this putty as filler, etc... but acording to him, the new rebox tamiya putty doesnt perform as good as the old one...when thinned with thinner or plastic cement, the new putty will eat the plastic..i also witness this when he showed me the results...but frankly, i never experience it when using the old putty...it bothers me as my putty will run out soon and the old stock (without box) is hard to find here....

does anyone of you guys ever experience this!!!

i just want to share this experience.... bye then...

cheers

No difference?

I sell both the boxed individual tubes and the unboxed, bulk tubes. Both are exactly the same. If you take the tubes in the boxes out they are the same tube as is also sold in a bulk carton. The putty in the tubes is the same, also. I have used BOTH packagings alternatively for some time. Tamiya sells individual tubes packaged in boxes so some shops can sell a few tubes and hang them on hooks. If a shop sells a lot of putty, they can buy a carton of tubes and the indivudual tubes are just stacked on a plastic tray. Most plastic puttys can/will react with plastic as that is how they work - they have to bond to the plastic, and usually contain many of the same solvents as plastic cements.

Thats funny my new tube was terrible

Funny you mention this, I had a tube with the orange cap and it was fine, needed a new one a few months later and it still had an orange cap BUT a slight difference in appearance. The new tube was crap ,too runny for zimmerit let alone filling!Bad tube or batch maybe? or have they changed the stuff?

I have the oppisite "problem"

July 1 2003, 2:55 AM

Not a problem, really, but mine eats the plastic when not thinned. Try to sand too early and the plastic/putty area is rubbery and comes up in little chunks. Let it dry and it sands better, but still a little soft and puttied area is stained gray. Thin it with Testor's LC and I have no problem. (Tamiya olive plastic is all I've used it on so far maybe it could have something to do with the plastic rather than the putty?)

Try Squadron

Of all the putties I've used i like the squadron green or white putty the best. Never had any problems with it at all.

I have some, but Tamiya's putty is

July 2 2003, 10:23 PM

much finer. Probably haven't used Squadron putty in years. Can't keep the first inch of putty in the tube from drying out and blocking the rest of the tube. I really prefer Miliput or Tamiya Polyester Putty for large filling, but I had the grey putty out to do some texturing and tried it out full-strength on a couple of spots and had this problem. I just didn't feel like mixing the other putties.
