P-E saws

December 10 2006, 11:40 AM

They probably don't make them now but I have some Tristar p-e saws (they used to do mixed media aircraft kits and sold some basic p-e sets like mesh and the saws). The Trimaster saws came in different shapes, sizes, etc. They are VERY thin (thinner than an Xacto blade or Xacto saw. Plus since they dont have a handle, you can saw side ways. Be careful, though, as its too easy to gouge all around the detail you are trying to remove.

I think Verlinden has a p-e saw set among others.

I had to remove a tricky detail once. I cut the whole thing out leaving a hole in the turret roof, which was easy to fill with plastic and sand smooth. Then I just sanded the thickness of the turret from the bottom of the detail, and glued it down in the new position.

Looking at the ones HLJ offer, it seems the ones you mention are now offered by Hasegawa.

best regards,

have the HLJ ones and the VLS ones, VLS better

December 10 2006, 11:24 PM

The Japanese ones are too thin and as such too flimsy to work well at any sawing more serious than figure fingers.
VLS/Custom Dioramics make a thicker set of etched saws I like very much and use them often.

MY US$0.02, your miliage may vary.

I Use a fine Excel Hobby Blade...

December 10 2006, 2:29 PM

Hi Marc;

I'm in Ontario, Canada and we have a TOY & HOBBY chain here that carries a line of EXCEL Hobby Blades, which are made in Paterson, NJ, USA. They offer about 20 different blades and several very fine saw blades that fit a #11 X-Acto handle nicely. Seem to be in the model Railway section.

The one I prefer sells as a #13 Saw Blade, 5 in a pack, for $4.00. Code: E#20013
These are quite fine, and even tend to bend if you work them too hard, so I wouldn't
want anything much lighter.

No URL on package, but here is the full address if you wanna try and find a site on-line.
EXCEL Hobby Blades, 481 Getty Avenue, Patterson, NJ 07503, USA
Telephone: (201) 278-4000

forgot, Micro mark sells xacto blade saws too

I love them, but they are very short so you cannot get a long sawing stroke with them.

Tiger

December 11 2006, 9:37 AM

The one Steve mentioned and my favorite right now is from a Czech outfit called Tiger (or the saw is called Tiger, can't recall). It's a very slick little tool. The blade is essentially a razor blade with different sized teeth on each side. One is very fine the other only slightly larger and good for ripping - it just flies through resin pour blocks. the blade mounts into a wood/steel handle that allows for several different posistion for the blade. It's very handy.

I bought mine at the IPMS Nationals in Atlanta. And i just don't know where to pick up replacement blades. If I find out I will post here.

it is a very well thought out and quite useful tool.
